Moreover, their huge propor- tions symbolize the greatness and magnitude of our class. Beauty is represented by the magnifi- cent Temple of Diana at Ephesus, Guidance, by the Alexandrian Pharos, whose beams pointed out the way to the mariners of old, Culture, by the colossal Statue of Apollo, patron of the Muses, Endurance, by the Great Pyramid, which has re- mained intact for countless ages, Passion, by the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus that was inspired by a Queen's grief, Wisdom, by the Statue of the Olympian Zeus, supreme ruler over the lives of the ancient Greeks, and Life, by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, that brought green fragrance to a lifeless desert. For these ideals may we always strive, that our life-work may be perpetuated as everlasting and useful monuments, and not become merely: Like snow upon the desert's dusty face, Lighting a little hour or two and gone. SEMPER FIDELIS DEDICATION E RE we embark on new voyages, we, the Class of June 1935, respectfully dedicate this Record to OUR PARENTS in grateful recognition and sincere appreciation of their guidance and self-sacrifice. C W.xL.'i'ER Ronmrs, Principal TO THE MEMBERS OF 'THE CLASS OF WIUXE, IVE? The Seven Vnlonders of the Wcmrld were the tullillment of the visions of men who saw their dreams take form, in part at least. For generations eaeh of these wonders has symliolized size or strength or permanence or heauty or the emhodiment of their hlending. They represent accomplishment. As a contrast men have struggled with the Seven Follies of Science and met the defeat which, we might say, was foreordained. An apparent glimpse of suecess spurred them on in their elliorts to triumph. only to meet with frustration. Wlieii we think of the Seven Follies of Science we think ol failure, although out of what was failure to the individual much ot oui scienee has developed. Although men may struggle with equal ardour and holdness. some may seein to win and some may seem to lose. The vision may he a wonder or it may he a folly. hut out of either may finally come much that is worth while. It is good to have a vision and the enthusiasm to seek its consummation. lvlay eaeh of you have a vision and may success attend you all. VUALTER ROBERTS. r .1 fs . if JLfiQ'ff7 .I if STELLA C. Productive imagination springs from true appreciation. Whzttever we admire, no matter where we see it, no matter whose it is, we value for its perfection or the satisfaction it hrings to us. The particular oh-iect of our awe may he the property of a state or the cherished possession of an individual. We respect their proprietorship, recognize their rights as owners, and rejoice that through them heautiful things have heen created and preserved. lt is only hy such an attitude of appreciation, where no envy or greed has dulled or destroyed our sense ol value, that lovely things mellow and come down to us through the ages, enriching us and adding to the worlds treasure. Let us con' sider each of these wonders in turn, and, hy applying them to our high school career, see how our class has progressed to the esteemed place it holds today. Wlieii we first entered high school, West Philly seemed to correspond to the Mausoleum at Halicarnassusf -an inanimate edifice erected to hold equally inert conf tents ffus freshmen. How we wandered through the hare vaults not knowing which way to turn! Lost in this lahyrinth of intricate networks, we would suddenly come upon a sentry, or patrol, who was carefully guarding a sacred passageway. It was these patrols with their up and down stairwaysn and one way corridors who caused our days to he filled with confusion. In QB we had harely heeome acquainted with our school surroundings. The one thing that had influenced us was the high and mighty dignity of the seniors. They impressed us much as the Statue of Olympian Jupiter at Athens must have impressed the ancient Greeks. This statue personified their supreme diety whom they feared and honored, As Jupiter was the originator of all that took place in the sky, so we helieved that it was the Seniors who controlled our paths. Rain and thunderholt alike hailed down upon us in the form of summonses and detentions. Through all this tumult and turmoil, however, we still looked up to the seniors with a respectful and reverent eye. Seventeen 0THE1935 Rsconno CLASSHISTORY The Colossus of Rhodes, the third great wonder of the world, must have appeared as far away and as aloof to the Greeks as knowledge did to us. This hrass statue of Apollo, erected at the port of Rhodes, was said to have heen seventy cuhits high. It hestrode the harhorfmouth, the vessels passing under its legs. So it seemed that we, in searching for a knowledge that looked too high and farfreaching, had to pass under or go around it. According to tradition, this statue was thrown down hy an earthquake and lay ahout the city in ruins. The people gathered together the hits of metal, melted, and sold them. Thus, when knowledge came down to our level, every one had a share in partaking of it. We did not look up to learning as something unattainahle hut reached out for it with eager hands. Although we eagerly searched for knowledge, we still had far to go to fulfill that great accomplishment. Diana, Goddess of the Hunt, seemed to symholize our hlind instincts, and it was in her Temple that we laid our incompleted works. With the Goddess of the Chase we raced over the sands of time until we found ourselves standing at the threshold of l1A. As the crew of an Egyptian ship exulted when it first caught sight of the Pharos of Alexandria, so we rejoiced when the horizon of a new term loomed into view. On returning from our quest in search of knowledge, we saw the faint glimmer of the friendly lighthouse, a heacon standing at the harhorfmouth, heckoning sojourners to enter and partake of all that was offered. The fruitful period, 11B, followed, and our class sprang up with new life much as did the Hanging Gardens of Bahylon. Weeds and apparently lifeless hushes and shruhs gave forth heautiful flowers. What had seemed a harren desert in the fall now hlossomed out into such fine specimens as our fair President, Lois Ledy, who was aided hy Boh Kahn, VicefPresident. Next down the line came Betty Deininger, Secretary, while from amid the gay panorama, such sun flowers as Catherine Davidson, Vice' President of the C. A., and Nannette Bellina, head of our ring committee. stuck out their heads in wild profusion. Sof mi DANCIQRS CoL'NcIL Crass Som: Eighteen W ri QTHE 1935 RECOR Riacoan STAFF Gowrs Firrmr Pnoxi C oxixiirri I But what is this queer looking species heading the foremost row of our garden? Why, it's none other than Leviticus, our class mascot, atop the first 11B column in The Vvlestem News. Our Senior Year! We stood firm and mighty, like the ancient Pyramids of Egypt. These Pyramids were constructed of huge granite blocks huilt one upon the other in the form of a tetrahedron, each of the faces narrowing itself down until finally all culminated in the topmost peak, or apex. All this seemed similar to the purpose of our school career. Incidents in our lives were these granite hlocks that went to make up the faces of our Pyramids. Our studies, our experiences, our aspirations, and our achieve- ments -fall the various sides of our lives which pointed to and aided us on toward Success were represented. The walls were simply the characters which our school life had so large a part in moulding. Within these walls we stored away everything that we wished to preserve and keep for some future time, just as the Egyptians hoarded many valuahles in their tomhs. In IZA our former class president resumed her leadership, ahly assisted hy Boh Herr, VicefPresident, Betty Deininger, Secretary, and Gertrude Maginniss, Treasurer. while Knute Neilson, one of our numher, hecame VicefPrcsident of the C. A. Then there was our first class social, and what a social it was! The committee. headed hy Dorothy O'Brien, provided entertainment fit for a Pharaoh .... Next came the everfurgent question of money, and what a time Gertrude had collecting dues! But who is this little figure dancing her way into our midst? Why it looks liken- it can't he- it is-f Betty Boop! Leviticus, heing too slow for a Seniors mascot, was put hack into first grade, and Betty Boop took his place. just as things were running smoothly again, who should decide to resign hut Boh Herr. who was running for President of the C. A. With this last event another chapter in our school life was closed. The Seven Vxfonders of ancient times lay hchind us: there was hut one remaining' fone our century could claim as its contrihution to :ivili:ation. Nineteen OTHE 1935 RECORD! At last! The June term is on, and we, as High Seniors, have begun the last lap of our journey toward the station marked Graduation With this new term has come into being what had previously been believed not only improbable, but impossible -the Eighth Wonder of the World-our Class! Any one looking upon this great group of five hundred and seventy strong could not but confirm this statement. We seem more than just a class-in fact, we have all the aspects of a great city. As our train stops at this city which lies at the crossroads leading to Graduation or Uncertainty, let us alight and take in the points of interest. Naturally the first building that we come across is the city hall. A meeting of the council is in session with Mayor Lois Ledy presiding. Let us investigate and dis- cover for ourselves the trend the meeting is taking. Lois has just finished reading the resignation of Secretary Betty Deininger. It is voted to accept this resignation so that Betty may become Chairman of the Senate, our great lawfmaking body. Dorothy O'Brien is installed as her successor with William Netsky as new VicefPresident. This being national election time, all 'Lcitizens' were going to the polls, and we were soon informed that Bob Herr had been elected President of the C. A. Then council elections named Irving Nuremberg Editor of the RECORD, to be aided by twenty' eight assistants. Mary Harvey, Editor of the Western News, was also chosen from our midst. With all these elections going on naturally our city had its politics, directed by the party leaders, Miss Richards and Mr. A. S. Longacre, whose helpful and untiring efforts did much to better our city. , We next decided to visit the courts where Knute Neilson was meting out justice, assisted by Senior Associate Justices Norma Endy, Nanette Bellina, and Howard Doug' lass. Of course there were several shyster lawyers standing about and two of these proved to be William Netsky and Regina Pollock, class horsers. But what wild strains of music do we hear coming from yon dance casino? Why, it's the Senior Prom in full swing! This gala affair was preceded by two socials which proved even more successful than that of the previous term. Hearing the shrill whistle which announced the departure of our train, we hurry back to the, station, board the Pullman, and are soon speeding on toward our destination. As we pass along we view with pride our past achievements, and realize that the inspira' tions afforded by the Seven Wonders of the World have been fulfilled. What does the future hold in store? we ask ourselves. We can only hope the next four years will be as happy for us as the last four have been. Toward what are we heading? Your class historian does not venture to say, all that he can answer is, Time alone will tell. I 'Twenty O T HE ffl-fb-935 RECORD WI-IO 9 Sea WI-IO ELS!! Citizens' Association HE executive body of the Citizens' Associaf tion is called the Board of Directors. This comprises a Faculty Advisory Council. The President and the VicefPresident of the C. A., the Chairman of the Senate, the Chairman of the Tribunal, and the Grade Directors of the School. The Board, with approval of the Advisory Council, has the power to determine standards of eligibility and student participation in activif ties. It also elects the Tribunal, appropriates funds to the C. A., and amends the Constitution with the approval of the Senate. The Board may reject any action of the Senate, but the Senate may override this veto. During this term great progress has been made in the accomplishments of the Board which has succeeded in promoting new and beneficial measures in the interest Tma TRIBVNAL of the school. The iudicial body of the C. A. is the Tribunal consisting of two boys and two girls from the IZB Class, and one boy and one girl from the IZA Class. A Chairman and a Secretary are selected from the 12B members. The Tribunal has the power to prescribe punishment for any student, club or organization because of any infraction of regulations under the jurisdiction or super' vision of the C. A., and to remove from oflice by a twofthirds vote any student whom it deems ineflicient in the performance of his duties. Such action requires the approval of the President and of the Director of Student Activities. The present procedure of the Tribunal is one of adjusting the diiiiculties met, instead of meting out punishment for offenses committed. Hence a greater degree of cooperation is obtained between the students and the Tribunal in securing justice in our schoo 1 THE BOARD or DIRECTORS Nmetyfeight 1. Q OTHE 1935 RECORD! WESTERN NEWS STAFF Western News UR only school periodical, the Western News, has, during this last year, appeared in a new, more convenient form. This semester, under the leadership of: EditorfirifCliief ....................... ................................... M ARY HARVEY News Editor ..,.. ............. M ARTIN STEIN Sports Editor ...................................................... IRVING NUREMBERG Feature Editor ........................................................ BETTY DEININGER the editorial staff has endeavored to publish a paper that should be of interest to every member of the school, including students and faculty. It has covered, in each of the monthly issues, at least sixty activities of the school. Each edition has outsold any other corresponding edition in the history of the nine spring terms. Much of the credit of the splendid sales is due to Lola Cooperman, Business Manager, and to her staff. Contrary to the policy of editions in the fall, sports has not been the main feature. This spring, the staff has tried to give every activity an equal amount of publicity. The climax of the term is the Senior issue which is published in the class colors and which contains, for the most art, 'h ' l f ating class. The progress of the Western News is due to the untiring efforts of Miss Melville who has been Editorial Sponsor for the last eighteen terms and of Miss Townsend, Business Sponsor. Both of these sponsors have given unlimited time in the interest of the paper and in supervising the business and editorial staffs. p sue artic es as are o especial interest to the graduf Shakespeare Club HE Shakespeare Club, one of the oldest and best known organizations in the school studies that great dramatist, to obtain a deeper insight into his plays. Music HE Music Division of our school is under the able supervision and direction of Mr. Harry P. Hoifmeister. Because of the divisions of musical talent into the First Orchestra, Second Orchestra, Novelty Orchestra, Band, Music Club, the various glee clubs and vocal ensembles, any student interested in musical education and recrea' tion can easily participate in these beneficial activities. Every year about the middle of january, the musical organizations collaborate in presenting the Annual Concert, which delights the hearts of all music lovers. A few of our students have distinguished themselves by appearing as guest artists at special musical performances. Many thanks are due to Miss Henderson, Miss Gevov, and Mr. Dreyfuse, as well as to Mr, Richardson and Mr. Riemer for their excellent and indefatigable services in sponsoring these musical groups. The Organ EAUTIFUL and imposing in appearance is the Bartholomay Pipe Organ which was formally dedicated on December 6, 1934. Rendering sublime enjoyment, this organ has endeared itself to the hearts of all. In 1923 the idea was suggested that a pipe organ would be a worthy contribution to thc assembly life of the former girls' school. From that time on the Organ Fund Committee worked feverishly and finally secured enough funds to have an organ built and installed. The organ is a striking example of modern mechanical efficiency, containing 2386 pipes, a set of chimes, an impressive console, and thousands of miles of wiring. Western eked out a victory over Frankford 2322, while in the next game South Philly did the same to West Philly, with the score 24623. This defeat seemed to pep Western into defeating Northeast 23453 West Catholic 2649, Chestnut Hill 2804, and Wenonah 22f2O. The last four games of the season were dropped to Catholic 26fl4g Central 17-14g Germantown Z1f2Og and Olney 3505. SOCCCI' THE ,Ionesmen had a fairly successful season, winning four decisions, losing five, and tying three. After losing the Hrst two games to Upper Darby and Cvratz, the Speedboys showed their offensive power by trouncing Swarthmore Frosh 7f1. The next two games One Hundred Five OTHE 1935 RECORDO with Olney and Germantown resulted in deadlocks. The Speedboys, however, ended the season successfully by holding Northeast Catholic funbeaten and untied until the West Philly game, to a 1f1 draw. Captain Sam Krameroff, Langill, Jacoby, Dunn, Confoganus, Ferraris, Zaroff, Rothman, and Herman were outstanding during the season. Swimming WEST PHILLY'S mermen splashed their way to fourth place in the Public High League despite the loss of some of their most valuable men. When Bob Emery was graduated, he left the 22O and diving events open. The 22O was ably filled by John Kelter and Edgar Northwood. In the diving event we obtained Bob Graham, who, at the time, was piloting the Gym Team. Bob showed his excellent ability as a diver by placing third in the city championship. The outstanding sprint men were Peanut Cleary, captainfelect for 1936, Henry Shetzline, Ira Harshaw, and Richard Smith. In the breast stroke and 100 yard events, Captain Bob Bartlett produced excellent results. Henry Shetzline rounded out their team by coming through as an accomplished backstroker. Ice Hockey ESTERN'S overnight sport, in the first year, became another addition to the championship list. Under the able direction of Coach Orttung and Captain Billy Roork, the Orange and Blue Speedkings got their first leg on the Ice Hockey trophy with a season of nothing but victories. In the six games of the season the Speedkings rolled forty goals to their oppof nent's seven. This was mostly due to the high scoring of Ted Stehle, who put the rubber puck in the net fourteen times, and Doug Tait, the next highest scorer in the Public High League, who made nine goals for Western. Although these two boys were outstanding, Captain Roork, Butler, Montgomery, Hayes, Lieberman, Ladner, and Frambes also deserve a great deal of credit. Second places were taken by Myers in the mileg Thomson in the 22O low hurdles, Dever the half-mile, and Flemining in the pole-vault. Fitzpatrick was tied for second in the high jump. In the next meet Western shared the winning honors with Northeast as they split the points evenly, 49 each. The winners were Richardson in the 100 and 6220 yard clashes, Petril taking the 44O and coming in second in the NO, and Diller snared first honors in the broad jump. Campbell was tied with Fitzpatrick and Bell in the high jump and was second in the 44O and broad jump. Tennis FTER a year's lapse, the Speedboy Netmen, consisting of Captain Herm Guberf man, Queroti, Meisler, Kline, Cahan, and Feldman, have again captured the Public High Championship, sweeping aside all rivals except their old nemesis, Central. In the InterfScholastic matches, the Hurwitzmen had a .500 average, taking the measure of St. joe, 3f2, and being nosed out by Penn Charter, 3f2. The racqueteers started their public High season with a bang by downing Frank' ford, 5f0. Three days later, on May 13, came their ony League setback by the Mirrors to the tune of 3f2. To avenge this defeat, the Speedboys trounced Northeast, 5'O. Continuing on their winning way, the Hurwitzmen trampled Gratz into the dust, 5'O. When Germantown visited West Philly, they were treated very harshly and returned home nursing a 5-O setback. In a closely contested match with their sectional rival, Overbrook, the Speedboys emerged the victor by a margin of a 3f2 victory. Ending up their season with a whitewash seemed inviting to the Netmen, and so they humbled Olney 5fO. Coach Hurwitz, who rates orchids for his fine work this year, remarked that this year's team turned in more whitewash victories than any other in Western's history. Also that more obsacles were overcome, more Hghting spirit and more scrappiness were shown than by any other championship team. Two members of the team went through the Public High season without suffering any setback. We need more and more Morty Kline's and john Queroti's. Coach Hurwitz expects to keep the championship in West Philly next year because of the many fine prospects he has seen in this year's second team. Captain Herm Guberman, who graduates in the fall, deserves much credit for his fine work this year and in the past. Before closing, a word should be said about the work of Manager Bob Abrams and his assistants, who without receiving any glory, did a great deal of work for the team. Gym ESTERN'S gymnasts ended their season by taking fourth place in the City Championship Meet. The Speedboys won their only meet in a nonfleague contest against Temple Frosh. The first league tilt saw Southern on top with Western above Gratz. The Orange and Blue tumblers then dropped a meet to the wellfbalanced Olney team, which won the City Championship. They were then sandwiched between Germantown and Central, and in the next meet, they received the same treatment with Northeast on top and Overbrook on the bottom. The Western Matmen tumbled into a fourth place in the City Championships, greatly because of the showing of Bob Graham, Western's captain who finished second in the individual scorings. Other outstanding Gymnasts were Sataloff, Blaufeld, Bannett, Carr, Thaete, Dean, and Dietzmann, who broke his arm early in the season. QTHE 1935 RECORDO Salutatory WHAT IT MEANS TO BE EDUCATED By CAROLYN STEPHENSON REETINGS from the graduating class of June, 1935. As Salutatorian I wish to extend to everyone present a welcome to these Commencement Exercises. We salute you, members of the Board of Education, you, through whose wise counsel, we have received such a thorough and wellfrounded education. To our principal and our faculty we voice our appreciation for your untiring efforts and helpful interest in guiding us to this goal. We are glad to have with us our relatives and friends, you who are nearest and dearest to us, who through the years have spared no sacrifice to help us arrive at this, our Commencement Day. We wish to thank you for the encouragement you have offered all along the way. It is our hope that we may develop into men and women worthy of the selffdenial and effort which you have made for our beneht. May we fulfill the highest expectations of all those who have been interested in us, and may we attain to some worthy accomplishment by means of the opportunities offered us through education, which is due in a great measure to the spirit of democracy which has ever prevailed in America. A truly democratic country must have a public school system which gives educa- tion, free to all, which covers all stages of education, and permits direct passage from one grade to the next higher, and which is attended by all. Until the nineteenth century education was generally considered, in the broad sense, as a privilege of the fortunate but few. Little by little all the states came to establish and maintain free public schools, until education has now become the right of every growing citizen. In time it was found that it was not enough to establish education as a right-it must become a duty. Tofday, since the passage of compulsory education laws, every child has an equal chance for an education. Now, the question is, What does it mean to be Educated? Before answering this, let me ask another question. What does the term education mean? I answer, it means not only instruction given through booksg it means also a gradual adjustment to the spiritual possessions of the race, with a view to realizing one's own potentialities and to assisting in carrying forward our inheritance of ideas, acts, and institutions which we call civilization. Who is the educated man? By what signs shall we know him? First among the evidences of an education, I name correctness and precision in the use of the mother tongue. One's hold upon the English language is measured by his choice of words and by his use of idioms. He knows the wide distinction between correct English on the one hand, and pedantic, or, as it is sometimes called, elegant English on the other. He is more likely to go to bed than to retire, to get up than to arise, to dress than to clothe himself, and to make a speech rather than to deliver an orationf' One Hundred Seventeen lTHE1935 RECORDO As a second evidence of an education, I name polite and gentle manners. Manners are behavior and good breeding, as Addison said, but they are more. Real manners, manners of a truly educated man or woman, are an outward expression of intellectual and moral convictions. Manners do not make the man, but manners reveal the man. As a'third evidence of education, I mention the power and habit of reflection. It is a frequent charge against us moderns, particularly against Americans, that we are losing the habit of reflection, and the high qualities which depend upon it. We are torn by conflicting or unconnected emotions, and our minds are occupied by ideas following each other with such rapidity that we fail to get a Hrm and deep hold of any one of the great facts that come into our lives. If these charges are true-and there are some counts in the indictment which it is difficult to deny-then one of the most precious evidences of an education is slipping from us, and we must redouble our efforts to keep fast hold upon it. For an unexamined life, Socrates unceasingly inf sisted, is not worth living. The educated man has standards of truth, of human experiences, and of wisdom by which new proposals are judged. These standards can be gained only through meditation. A fourth evidence of education is the process of growth. A human mind conf tinuing to grow and to develop throughout a long life, is a splendid and impressive sight. Broadened views, widened sympathies, deepened insights are the accomplish' ments of progress. For this development a many'sided interest is necessary, and this is why growth and intellectual and moral narrowness are eternally at war. And as a fifth evidence of education, I name efliciency--the power to do. Today the truly educated man must be in some sense, efficient. With brain, tongue, or hand, he must be able to express his knowledge, and so leave the world other than he found it. Abstract meditation without production is fatal both to character and to the highest intellectual power. Do somehing and be able to do it well, express what you know in some helpful and substantial form, produce and do not everlastingly feel only and revel in sensation--these are counsels which exhibit a real education opposed to that sham form of it which is easily recognized as well informed incapacity. The habit of making knowledge, power, is efficiency. Without it education is incomplete. These five characterstics, then, I offer as evidences of an education-correctness and precision in the use of the mother tongue, polite and gentle manners, which are the expression of fixed habits of thought and action, the power and habit of reflection, the process of growth., and eiiiciency, as the power to do. On this plane the physicist may meet the poet, and the naturalist with the army officer, and each recognize that his fellow is an educated man, though the range of their information is widely diff ferent, and the centres of their highest interests are far apart. It is these habits, of necessity made by ourselves alone, and begun in the days of school and college, that we must improve. Strengthen these with maturer years and broader experience and they will show to ourselves and to others that we have discovered the secret of gaining an education. One Hundred Eighteen 1 OTHE 1935 RECORD, Valedictory WHAT IT MEANS TO BE EDUCATED By ELEANOR BAILENSON F WE begin to think about life seriously, we find that mankind lives in two worlds. We live first of all in the physical world into which we are born. Besides that there exists a world created by the power of education. Not everyone has the privilege or the ability to enjoy them both. Therefore, the real leaders of civilization are those who enter the portals of education and pave a way for us to follow them. The need grows continually greater for more of such people to emulate the deeds of the masters. Herein lie our paths of endeavor. . Humanity is eagerly awaiting the birth of another master to lead it in its gropings for the elusive truth. How are we to recognize this person at meeting? Certainly, he must be educated. The thought then arises in our minds, is it not possible that this person is in our very midst? Such a coincidence is more than possible. However, before humanity can proclaim that another golden name has been discovered, the leader must apply the test of a true education to himself in order to learn if he is worthy of this supreme honor. The first test of education is a quickening of the mind to the beauties of art and nature, to religion and cultured writings, to music and the calm of meditation. Only a spirit, tremulous with the sensation of beauty, can realize this tranquillity. There' fore, vulgarty, which Ruskin calls the lack of sensation, can not exist in the truly educated person, because his life is enriched by higher impressions. Nothing truly beautiful, no matter how obvious, can escape his appreication. Such a person is Alive to gentle influence Of landscape and of sky And tender to the spirit'touch Of man's or maiden's eye. Education strives to Gt us with effective weapons so that we can perform the tasks which opportunity yieds. With education a person can entertain no vain regrets that what he might have done is made hopeless through lack of ability. It remains for us to use the learning of our years. We should extend our knowledge with still further attempts so that great accomplishments will be ours. Then the words of Gascoigne, A boy is better unborn than untaughtf' can not be true of us. Indeed, the life that never comes upon this world can create no sorrow and work no ruin. It is the ignorant mind which adds to the burden of misfortune and makes havoc with the efforts of centuries. , This results in corruption in our method of living, and to remedy this we can not recline and depend upon politics or any other agency to perform the task. We must go farther and seek our salvation in education. Masses of trained intelligence must operate toward a common end to attain the purification of our ideals. Here again can be seen the meaning of education to the world. Past and future fuse into one. The world's flowing fates recast in the mould of each truly educated person, who gives the support of his highly trained faculties to a great movement. How sad a thing our lives would be if it were not for the educated to lead us in our stumbling endeavors! One Hundred Nineteen OTHE 1935 RECORDO The men who serve humanity are those whose minds are trained to view all sides of a question. Their love of perfection is something iniinite in its power to do good, because their love is removed from selffconceit. In fact, the mark of an edu' cated man, in the words of Emerson, is his absence of pretensionf' The education of the servant of a great cause does not make him the ruler of many. Instead, it teaches the ambitious spirit the sources of pleasure and power that can be derived from his own hands and mind. Then the person is ready to be useful where he is most needed. Then it is that education adopts its true meaning, when all that seeps into the soul is returned to the world in the channels of benevolent action. The training which makes men happiest in themselves also makes them serviceable to others, as Ruskin said. A man can be of little use to the world if he is of no use to himself. Here education seeks to perfect each character. Then, wherever he may go, he can always find worth and beauty in proportion to that which he carries in his own heart. Education means a trained eye that sees the glory of an open road, that up-er ceives the power of the Master in the tiny creations about him, that senses the depth of mental and moral calm in solitude. Education means a dignity of mind, courtesy and appreciation of kind words and beautiful thoughts. The true student, who realizes the charm of education, seeks to learn, to build his body and soul, to under' stand the great minds of the ages. His inspiration is the pure love for intelligence. To him all nature appears in its true state. The student is humble in spirit. Yet he understands the reality of man and beast with the keen perception of one who ceases to live in the rushing circle of petty desires. Instead, he calmly repeats the words of Milnes, To me men are for what they are. They wear no masks with me. Education means the truth laid bare, quivering before the eye of him who has sought it so long. Education plants the seed of character in the heart of man. Then he can honorably and bravely fill his place in the world. When the student painstakingly seeks to discover the meaning of an author and finally bursts upon the open plain, blazing in the sunlight of revelation, unquestionably character mounts to the stars. The boy or girl who lives plainly, wears the old hat and coat to obtain the coveted right of a college training, is educated in moral strength. Indeed, the desired purpose is not attained at the first or second attempt. It will not come with ease, nor with the acknowledgment of the masses. Such popularity is for dolls, says Emerson. Steep and craggy is the path of the gods, says Porphyry, but with the humble spirit and dauntless will, with an aching heart and torn hands, the student reaches his final goal. His joy is found in the way by which the masters have come before him. His character can exult in its accomplishment and victory. The joy of sucf cessful labor is keen. Let my joy be threeffourths pain! cried Browning. Then can one appreciate the revelations of the ages, when one has battled for the right to look into the hourfglass of truth. Then can the individual find his niche in the world and integrate himself in the ranks of the masters. One Hundred Twenty OTHE 1935 RECORD! Now let us also follow the paths of the true scholar. No matter where we find our education, let it always mean the love of heauty, music, truth, and wisdom. Let our choice of friends he influenced hy a marked harmony of the spirit. May we he happy in the power that our education gives us to serve others. With love of nature and courtesy to our fellow men, let us lahor joyfully and contentedly. Then in the future we may meet and realize that a deeper power unites us. Then we realize that in our education we find brotherhood, and we never really say farewell, hut instead until we meet again in the wonderings of our meditations and service to the world. M ll!
