SOCCER After a mediocre season the booters reposed in sixth place in the league. Show- ing a record of three victories, three ties and seven losses, one can readily under- stand the final position. The number of tie games was one reason for the league standing depth. The other reason was the non-support of the student body. Re- cipients of the varsity W were: Downs, Bagot, Hofstetter, Gordon, Campbell, Nicol, Reese, Ferraris, Rubenstein, Field, Watman, and Herman. SWIMMING The Natators, after one of the poorest seasons a Speedboy squad has ex- perienced in a long time, finished seventh in the Public High League. Again due to lack of student support and also material, this team was forced to accept defeat upon defeat. Members of the team were Captain Benditt, Emory, Rabin, Keen, Cooper, and Fagen. In spite of handicaps they managed to beat West Catholic. BASKETBALL In finishing second to Southern in the B league, Western's Cagers com- pleted one of the most brilliant seasons in recent years. The squad was composed of Harrison, Donaldson, Leonard, Busha, Lott, Duboff, Conard, Nannos, and Rosenberger. Among the defeated teams were, Central, Overbrook, Northeast, and VVest Catholic. Harrison was leading scorer and Leonard was an All-Public High selection. CROSS-COUNTRY With Berger, Williams, Dickerson, Carroll, Lane, Zahn, Pollock, and Garcia finishing in that order in the finals, W'estern's harriers climaxed a very successful season. Coach Hughes should be complimented because he had nary a letterman with which to form the team. GYM With men like Stern, Hexter, Koehler, McClure, Sabater, Krangle, and Hill, West Philly enjoyed unusual success from the gymnasts. Coach Keebler directed the squad. TENNIS The fall team passed a fairly successful season with the following players: Misler, Steinberg, Goldblatt, Lipshutz, Yaskin, Goldman, and Marmon. Prospects are much brighter for the spring season. BASEBALL For the second consecutive season the Speedboys finished below the first divi- sion. The only bright light during the season came in the form of a 3-2 victory over Overbrook. Craig, pitcher, was the most consistent performer on the squad. .41 J TRACK The Speedboy cindermen finished second to Central in the city meet, after one of the most brilliant seasons Western has had in years. But for the illness of Tom Fitzpatrick, 3-event man, whose absence meant the loss of at least 5 points, West Philly might have boasted of another championship squad. We were nosed out, 42 to 37. Horace Clark retained his t'440 title and added the 220 while Skeets Elberson copped the 100 for another individual championship. The trackmen also won the mile relay championship in record-breaking time at the Penn Relays and captured four consecutive triangular meets against Public High teams. Point winners were Clark, Elberson, Campbell, Williams, Rosen- berger, Fitzpatrick, Dunmore, Cleaver and Murray. Page 24 THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933

readily be reiterated that the team's failure was due to exceptionally poor support from the student body, acknowledging the fact that the home field is just around the corner. Members of the team were, Egan, J. and L. Leonard, Gavin, Freuden- heim, Donaldson, Elberson, Craig, Patterson, Richman, N annos, Harrison, and Trites. GOLF The golf team did not fare so successfully as teams of previous seasons. Mem- bers of the squad were Captain Goldblatt, Schwartz, Ross, Smith, Andrews, and Rubenstein.
