THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 5 E W W W W s W W W W W W W W W W WALTER ROBERTS Principal - P092 6 THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 o THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933: I am glad that the theme of your record is music. All peoples of all the ages since primitive man first danced to the rhythm announced by striking two sticks together or by the beat of a drum, have had some kind of music. In music the individual, from the lulla- by of his babyhood through his whole life, gives expression to his emotions. As a child, song accompanies his play, as a lover, he has his love song, as a warrior, his battle song, he voices his reverence for his God in hymns, he sings or whistles to keep up his courage, in music he finds relief from the tension of daily life, an influence to lighten his sorrow, an outlet for his joy. We should not forget that music is not today as it was yesterday. It has not stood still, but, on the contrary, has gradually developed. The music of one age is not the music of another age. We love the product of the masters of the past but the masters of today are giving us a different kind of music. Some of the older folk of our time shake their heads and wonder why we call the dissonance and atonality of modern composition, music. Yet it is music and an expression of our age, whether we all may learn to appreciate it or not. Music does develop, it does grow. Certainly in choosing music for the theme of the class book of growing individuals, you have found something of universal appeal and something that too, is growing. Can you imagine a world without music? What a dreary, sordid place it would be! May you all, today and in the years to come, appreciate and enjoy this wonderful gift to man. Our best wishes for success go with you as you leave us on your Commencement Day. Ilost sincerely yours, WALTER ROBERTS. CQWEW THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 7 ft HE poet Wordsworth mourned that the H celestial light with which we see the earth and every common sight clothed when we are young fades into the light of common day as we grow up. Shades of the prison-house begin to close upon the growing boy, he lamented. Beautiful things, in nature and human nature, in art and act, all become dulled and dimmed to us as we get used to them and grow to take them for granted. Pity 'tis, 'tis so. But we need not let it be so. We can, if we will, keep free of this prison-house of adult boredom and drabness. Many adults do, and all young people have the chance to do so. VVe must keep our sense of wonder, says the philosopher. We need not lose our feeling of the magic and majesty of things while we lind out more about them. We must keep youth's enthusiasm, youth's intensity and dauntlessness, if we would keep truly alive, says David Seabury, the psychologist. Youth, be it in the unspoiled young person or in the person of years who has preserved the spirit of youth, believes in an eternal and eventual rightness underneath all things, isfull of eagerness and earnestness to uncover and keep uncovered this rightness, burns with admiration for order and harmony wherever it is shown, possesses cheer and courage in the face of problems and difficulties and troubles, knowing there is a way through every one of them to triumph if he will use brain and heart to find it. All these qualities every young person can keep to the end of life if he will keep on expressing and using them in every relationship and situation. BEATRICE R. RICHARDS. Page 8 THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 MQ.. ,,,, - . 1 we o YoU, THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933: Another four years has passed. You young men and young women who came here as boys and girls seeking knowledge, are going forth with confidence to meet the duties and responsibilities of life in the larger World-a world at this time struggling with serious economic and social problems. W'e have seen you grow in body and in mind and have faith in your ability and character to stand hrmly for the right in Whatever your lot may be. As we think, so we are. May you be given the strength to live up to your convictions and never to be ashamed of what you have done. Sincerely, AARON S. LONGACRE. THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 9 sl -1-vw, -- --',n'l'. ' REETINGS TO THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933: When the ear is attuned, otherwise ordinary sounds become music. To the modernist, a steamboat whistle, the throb of machinery, the bustle of a busy day may suggest the theme of a symphony. The sensitive ear of the composer detects undertones and rhythm, which may be blended and varied to pro- duce a pleasing harmony, softly charming, or vitally stimulating. Those who cultivate the listening ear find new worlds opening before them, where quite common- place affairs take on new meaning and hitherto-un- known rhythms add zest to the adventure of living. WESTERN NEWS ESPITE the obstacles occasioned by the depression, the Western News Staff has continued this term to furnish the students with a paper of which they may well be proud. As in former times, the staff was selected from a trained jour- nalism class. Mr. Edelman is the sponsor of the paper, While Jack Kremens has shown himself to be a very progressive Editor-in-Chief. The most notable achievement of the season was the fact that the gridmen finished the Public High season undefeated and kept their goal-line uncrossedg a worthy achieve- ment indeed! They garnered nine consecutive league tilts in smashing their way to a championship, beating such aggregations as Central, three times champion, Over- brook, Gratz, Southern, Northeast, and Frankford. Two defeats blemished an almost perfect season. Both defeats came from the hands of non-league rivals viz.: W'est Catholic and Allentown. The Allen- town game was the opening fray and was lost by a 6-0 score on a last-minute for- ward pass. In a bitterly-contested game at the Phillies' Ball Park, and with the largest school-boy crowd that ever watched a game in Pennsylvania, 20,000 looking on, the Speedboys were downed, 9-0. The Burrs were a little too strong for the Orange and Blue. McFadden, Blue and White back, kicked a 33-yard field goal which was followed by the only touchdown of the game in the third period. Western did put on a spirited rally in the third and last quarters which netted about 65 yards, but they were stopped on the Burrs' 18-yard line. The game ended with forwards being flipped all over the held by Harrison and Peltz, but to no avail. From the championship squad, four men were placed on the All-Public High team viz.: Harrison, Peltz, L. Leonard, and Clark. Harry Harrison, stellar quarter- back, was named as a halfback on the all-scholastic team. Ray Peltz, Les Leonard, and Bill Leonard received honorable mention for the same team. Incidentally, Harrison is next year's captain. The following players were recipients of the varsity award and gold football as a token of the championship: Harrison, Donaldson, Rosenberger, Nannos, Peltz, Pitman, Bensinger, Clarke, Captain Schreep, Mackay, Howard, Lennon, L. Leonard, W. Leonard and Elberson. THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 23 .41 J TRACK The Speedboy cindermen finished second to Central in the city meet, after one of the most brilliant seasons Western has had in years. But for the illness of Tom Fitzpatrick, 3-event man, whose absence meant the loss of at least 5 points, West Philly might have boasted of another championship squad. We were nosed out, 42 to 37. Horace Clark retained his t'440 title and added the 220 while Skeets Elberson copped the 100 for another individual championship. The trackmen also won the mile relay championship in record-breaking time at the Penn Relays and captured four consecutive triangular meets against Public High teams. Point winners were Clark, Elberson, Campbell, Williams, Rosen- berger, Fitzpatrick, Dunmore, Cleaver and Murray. Page 24 THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 SOCCER After a mediocre season the booters reposed in sixth place in the league. Show- ing a record of three victories, three ties and seven losses, one can readily under- stand the final position. The number of tie games was one reason for the league standing depth. The other reason was the non-support of the student body. Re- cipients of the varsity W were: Downs, Bagot, Hofstetter, Gordon, Campbell, Nicol, Reese, Ferraris, Rubenstein, Field, Watman, and Herman. SWIMMING The Natators, after one of the poorest seasons a Speedboy squad has ex- perienced in a long time, finished seventh in the Public High League. Again due to lack of student support and also material, this team was forced to accept defeat upon defeat. Members of the team were Captain Benditt, Emory, Rabin, Keen, Cooper, and Fagen. In spite of handicaps they managed to beat West Catholic. BASKETBALL In finishing second to Southern in the B league, Western's Cagers com- pleted one of the most brilliant seasons in recent years. The squad was composed of Harrison, Donaldson, Leonard, Busha, Lott, Duboff, Conard, Nannos, and Rosenberger. Among the defeated teams were, Central, Overbrook, Northeast, and VVest Catholic. Harrison was leading scorer and Leonard was an All-Public High selection. CROSS-COUNTRY With Berger, Williams, Dickerson, Carroll, Lane, Zahn, Pollock, and Garcia finishing in that order in the finals, W'estern's harriers climaxed a very successful season. Coach Hughes should be complimented because he had nary a letterman with which to form the team. GYM With men like Stern, Hexter, Koehler, McClure, Sabater, Krangle, and Hill, West Philly enjoyed unusual success from the gymnasts. Coach Keebler directed the squad. TENNIS The fall team passed a fairly successful season with the following players: Misler, Steinberg, Goldblatt, Lipshutz, Yaskin, Goldman, and Marmon. Prospects are much brighter for the spring season. BASEBALL For the second consecutive season the Speedboys finished below the first divi- sion. The only bright light during the season came in the form of a 3-2 victory over Overbrook. Craig, pitcher, was the most consistent performer on the squad. It can THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 25 readily be reiterated that the team's failure was due to exceptionally poor support from the student body, acknowledging the fact that the home field is just around the corner. Members of the team were, Egan, J. and L. Leonard, Gavin, Freuden- heim, Donaldson, Elberson, Craig, Patterson, Richman, N annos, Harrison, and Trites. GOLF The golf team did not fare so successfully as teams of previous seasons. Mem- bers of the squad were Captain Goldblatt, Schwartz, Ross, Smith, Andrews, and Rubenstein. BOYS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Another term is about to close and the boys' A. A. continues to run smoothly in its attempt to revive intramural sports. VV ith Robert VVatt, president, and Walter Smith, secretary, the Board is composed of the following directors from 12B down, Jerome Freudenheim, Sam Boyd, Norman Anderson, Robert Lipsey, james Red- ding, George Sly, Harry Seltzer, and Leonard Freudenheim. The 12B class showed superiority in winning the grade basketball title and is well on its way to win the baseball championship at this writing. The members of the winning team received full numerals. I In an effort to give all boys an equal chance, tennis has been added to the pro- gram of sports for the first time since the reorganization of the Boys' A. A. Thus it can be seen that a boy has an opportunity to choose his favorite sport from a line variety. Mr. Evans, the power behind the A. A., should be congratulated on his efforts in reestablishing one of the school's most potential factors. It was a throng of happy boys and girls that was entering the VVest Philadelphia High School in September, 1929. They could easily be compared to a musical composition. There were whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and some eighth notes. Some entered adagio, a bit bewildered at the complexity of the schoolg while others joined in the assemblage with the agility of allegro or even presto. However, their prowess was curtailed for a time by the high and mighty seniors, whose bienvenu was a cradle song. 1 Eval li l'l'l-l.lj Pbclflfx-bm met ON me Tree TDP Presently they became fascinated in the minor activities or appoggiaturas of the movement. There was a place for everyone in Clubs, Sports, or Student Govern- ment work. The time slipped by and soon they heard a faint note PE which meant that they were no longer anathema to upper classmen. Their major branches of education also prospered, for at the end of their second measure, many names decked the Honor Roll. THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 33 l The tempo became accelerando with a Crescendo of numbers. For at the conclusion of that strain M1 they met new friends who had just emigrated from the Junior High Schools. Those strange companions soon became familiar with the intricacies of their novel situation and pitched into the Work of their classmates, conspirito. There was no rallintando in the beat of time and they perceived that :li- JAC fO had been added to their scale. By this time their directors had taught them how to converse in other tongues, manipulate complex objects, amend minor defects, and carol in harmony. 1 CLASS COUNCIL FIRST ROW-George Smith, Barbara Bartley, Martin Field, Lois Young, Harry Shoemaker, Eleanor Cronin, Lew Goldstein. SECOND ROW-Duffield Clark, James Dawson, Walter Doscher, jams Gilfillan. They were all living in the fond anticipation of creating an organized class. Shortly, it Was time for them to climb a little higher, so X-'pf was re- sounded on their staff. They were then ready to chime in and select leaders. How- ever, before any task was performed, their conductors, Miss Beatrice Richards and Mr. Aaron Longacre, were presented with their batons. An impressive and expressive young lady, Lois Young, was then elected to the honorable high pitch of President together with Halbert Gartside, Vice-President, and Martin Field, Treasurer and Secretary. To what then were they looking forward? Their class rings, of course. Presently perfect harmony reigned, for in every nook and cranny fingers and rings were seen. As they looked ahead whom did they perceive? None other than their tall and handsome mascot, good old joe Palooka of comic strip fame! He was fluent and clever in giving advice to his class. THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 35 Howdy seniors, jes' yer ole reminder speakin'! Youze surely look swelligant with yer brand new finger rings. And then a pause came in their progress and the school remained vacant for three months. However, the fermata soon eventuated and once more old acquaint- ances were refreshed and previous work resumed, as TI echoed tril- lingly on the staff. The preferred students were then chosen to further the prog- ress of the class. Lois Young as the chief of the body was reinstalled with Harry Shoemaker, Vice-President, Eleanor Cronin, Secretary, and Martin Field, Treas- urer. Then the students chanted a joyful lay to their parents for dues, and nickels and dimes tinkled tunefully into their funds. Red and Blue, the class colors, were espied on charms and pins belonging to the members. Music and dancing then held sway as the 12A social passed gayly. The final strain ' DO of the octave then pealed forth, signifying that the class had reached its highest pitch in VVest Philly. In the big C. A. elec- tion Jack Lyons won the presidency and two of his associates were appointed to exalted positions. Matt Donaldson held his position, Chairman of the Senate, with tip-top excellency, while Bernard Barol likewise, maintained the harmony of the school, as Chairman of the Tribunal, with the beat of the gavel. Then came the need to inscribe in a book the melody of X E l 1 I-J I more ni ra fo ia ii 'Do So Harriet Spatig with an energetic group of assistants was elected Editor-in-Chief of the RECORD. There was music in the air and the feelings of the Palooka min- strels were expressed in a class song composed by Helen Kutcher. The Committee, headed by Page 36 THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Harry Shoemaker, gave a sigh of relief at the success and happiness of the occasion, Then came a solemn yet beautiful Coda, Commencement. As Salutatorian I wish to extend to everyone present awelcome to these Commencement Exercises. We salute you, members of the Board of Education, you, through whose wise counsel, we have received such a thorough and well-rounded education. To our principal and our faculty we voice our appreciation for your untiring efforts and helpful interest in guiding us to this goal. We are glad to have with us our relations and friends, you who are nearest and dearest to us, who through the years have spared no sacrifice to help us arrive at this, our Commencement Day. We wish to thank you for the encouragement you have offered all along the way. It is our hope that we may develop into men and women worthy of the self-denial and effort which you have made for our benefit. May we fulfil the highest expectation of all those who have been interested in us and may we attain to some worthy accomplishment by means of that opportunity for individual development which is due in a great measure to the spirit of democracy which has ever prevailed in America. Led by the desire for freedom, the Pilgrims and Puritans came to the rock- bound coasts of New England. The need of self-reliance, amidst the difficulties they encountered, developed in them a strong, independent, individualistic character. In the pioneer life every man had to depend on his own working power to determine his importance in his community. There was revealed a necessity for self-govern- ment which aided the development of the individual politically and socially. The discovery and use of valuable natural resources, which were found in the mountains, plains, and wooded hills, led to the rise of huge industries and to the invention of machinery and labor-saving devices to facilitate the manufacture of raw materials. Through these productive enterprises were brought to the fore magnates and inventors who attained prominence mainly through ambition and perseverance. Today, there are men who have obtained the eminence which is theirs only through the opportunities open to the individual which democracy affords. The value of the person in the modern world does not depend largely on ancestry, but on leadership and creative ability. These qualities can be seen in the lives and ac- complishments of some of our great men, past and present. Let us turn back the pages of history to that memorable day of December in 1620 when the God-fearing Pilgrim Fathers anchored the M ayflowerin Plymouth Bay and first set foot on our shores. They were a small band of men in a vast wilderness. Separated from any neighbors by miles of treacherous forests, they were compelled to rely upon themselves. Each man made what he ate and wore and lived ing each man formed and held his own opinion. From such rugged stock came forth men of mighty individual power. - THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 129 Benjamin Franklin was one of the sons of New England who evinced great initiative and creative ability in the world of his day. When he first came to Phila- delphia, he appeared ridiculous to a young girl who was watching him from a door- step. Little did she think that this printer's apprentice was to become an infiu- ence through whom, The old order changeth yielding place to new. Through him were instituted public libraries, public schools, police and fire departments and such civic changes to make public life immeasurably safer and more convenient. That the spirit of the South, no less than that of New England, fostered indi- vidual achievement is indeed manifested by the greatest of our Colonial forefathers, George Washington. In the intangible realm of character there is no other country that can show in the past century or more, a man of greater nobility than he. In the travail of war and revolution, America had brought forth a man to be ranked with the greatest of military leaders, executives, and diplomats. This man by sheer force of character, combined with integrity, held a divided and disorganized country together until victory was achieved, and, after peace was won, still held his disunited countrymen by their love, respect, and admiration for himself until a nation was welded into enduring strength and unity. About a half-century later, we see the caravan lumbering along over the trails of the VV est, bearing thrifty, emigrant men, stout of heart, braving the perils of the great wildernessg and by their sides we see the ever self-sacrificing Pioneer mother. The lowly log-cabin, which was the characteristic home of these dauntless ad- venturers, brought to us the man who was to hold the nation together at a perilous time. Abraham Lincoln received limited schooling but through his own perseverance and initiative he fitted himself for the position of leadership which was to become his in later life. The great spirit of individualism was surely revealed in the rise of power of this untrained, untried, homely rail-splitter and backwoodsman who under- took in humbleness of mind the task of retaining as one the North and South. Of equal importance with the historical background in the development of the individual, was the growth of industry occasioned by the vast natural resources. To aid in the manufacture of raw products, there were brought into being inventions which in turn made their creators prominent. Two inventors who did much for the agricultural world were Eli Vlfhitney and Cyrus McCormick. It was through Eli W'hitney's cotton gin that the history of the South was radically changed, and from lVlcCorrnick's reaping machine great benefits were derived for the North and VV est. One of the renowned kings of industry wasAndrew Carnegie, who utilized one of America's great natural resources, iron, and through intense effort and great in- genuity organized one of the world's largest steel corporations. Our Nation has produced other leaders whose personal value in the modern age was developed by the advantages of democracy. Some of the most prominent may be found in the political world filling the office of executives of the government of the United States. Among these was Theodore Roosevelt, who was a man of great versatility and a force for righteousness. He used his great power for good in his war against the capitalists in the coal strike of the anthracite region, in his pro- Page 130 THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 ceedings against the trusts, and in his success in establishing the Pure Food and Drugs Act. It can truly be said ,of him, When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice. A few years later, during the World War, Herbert Hoover became prominent through his wonderful work as an engineer and food commissioner in Europe. He, also, obtained his high position through perseverance, self-denial, and hard work. The privileges which have ever abounded to the individual in America helped this striving youth to attain eminence. These opportunities open to the young man in the Land of the Free, aid those interested not only in politics but also in business and professions. One who availed himself of these advantages was Henry Ford. He rose to a place of individual im- portance as a manufacturer of motor cars and his infiuence has extended to all lands. Similar to him, but in a different phase, is our world-f med inventor, Thomas Edison, who by his creative mind brought electricity as a, practical commodity to mankind and benefited thousands in their every-day life. The great power to which an individual can rise may be used for good or evil, for selfish, or unselhsh purposes. This influence can be exercised to a disadvantage when employed to monopolize trade or industry to the extent that other men's op- portunities are crushed out and people in general become subjects to be profited by. Ruskin, in one of his essays, condemns rulers of this earth who consider those under their authority as sheep whose flesh may be fed upon and whose fleece is to be gathered. Since No man liveth unto himself, and, Virtue is the only solid basis of greatness, no person is really great unless he uses his power to benefit others beside himself. It is the desire of every true American citizen that his Coun- try may continue to be the land of opportunity, a place of unlimited possibility, possibility for the individual. THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 P692 131 VALEDICTORY BY EDWIN ROME THE INTEGRITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL ANY years ago Henrik Ibsen, the great Norwegian playwright and free- thinker, said, I believe that he is strongest who stands most alone. Ibsen knew whereof he spoke. Even in his day the preservation of one's personality and individuality was threatened. People who had their own ideas and did not conform with the accepted group mold were looked at askance. They were something to be wondered at. Ibsen, himself, experienced that situation. Today, when mass education and mass production are the accepted practices, the individual faces an even greater fight in order to preserve his identity. Individuality is so important to all peoples and to all nations that it must have an important part in our thoughts. When persons lose their identity they have lost that something which lends meaning and purpose to lives. Without it they are merely a group of robots, all thinking the same, all doing the same. Progress and advancement in thought, industry, and social well-being stop. Gradually, the long road back is retraced. Sir Richard Burton warned against such a recession in his day, Walt Whitman warned against it in his, Ibsen in his. Today the warning must again be issued. The declaration must again be made: the integrity of the individual must be pre- served. There is one threatening danger to individuality which is peculiar to America. America has been called the land where money means everything. It must be acknowledged that, in a measure, that statement is true. Many of our people turn all their time and energies to the getting of wealth. Everything is in terms of Money and Business. This, happening on a large scale, is a hazard which cannot be ignored. In America the common denominator for everything is material ac- complishment. The division of all into this denominator is attempted. We Americans are extremely susceptible to fads. A new type of hat is intro- duced and, in a week or two, every woman and girl in the country is wearing it. An expression is coined and, in even less time, it is on the tongue of almost everyone. When such things peril the individuality of one's outward appearance and speech it is easily seen how pressing the problem really is. Everyone is a member of a particular group of friends. This is a line thing in many respects. It may, however, lead to an unforeseen danger. After a time there is no interchange of new thought for such an exchange is soon exhausted. We begin to think alike. We dress alike. VVe talk alike, and follow the same routine. The ultimate result is the most unfortunate type of standardization and conformity. One's identity has been submerged. In A.merica, and other countries, the newspapers, to an extent, are a peril to the preservation of one's thoughts. On all questions the press takes sides and forms opinions. These opinions are, usually, accepted without question by the readers. The Hmolders of public opinion do just that for too many people. Page 132 THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 The greatest menace which I shall discuss lies in mass education. Each term sees the graduation of hundreds of thousands of students. They have been taught the same things, in practically the same manner, and in almost the same type of schools with some variation. Have these students been cut out of different types of dough with the same cooky-cutter? Perhaps I may better illustrate my thought by describing a cartoon which appeared in a magazine several months ago. The picture showed a schoolhouse through one door of which a group of children walked. They were of all types, of different personalities, and of varying degrees of intelligence. From the second door of the school came a straight file of mechanical children, walking in step, dressed the same, and, it was implied, with the same knowledge. America prides herself on the fact that all her children are treated alike in the schools. Much can be said for this system. The United States is one of the few countries in which there is really equality of opportunity in education. T This principle, however, has its dangers. The purely cultural education of former years has given way to the persistent seeking for economic betterment. There is danger that the finer sensibilities of the individual will not be developed. Already efforts are being made, however, to combine the benefits of equal opportunity with those of individual treatment. Dr. Abraham Flexner advocates this plan: students who are mentally above the average are to be placed in separate schools. They will be allowed to advance in their work whenever they are ready. Consideration will be taken of types and tem- peraments. A similar plan has already been put into execution at Northwestern University. Schools equally adapted to the needs of other students will be provided. All efforts will be concentrated on placing them in the field in which they will work most willingly and best. Curricula will be varied and elastic. ' We shall place less emphasis on material accomplishment. More attention will be given to other things-subjects which differ widely from our daily job. Our knowledge will be as broad, as nearly all-inclusive, as possible. We shall, thus, avoid limiting ourselves to one field and having our thought constricted to matters pertaining only to that field. More than anything, however, the individual himself must fight to preserve his identity. Outside influences do help. More is dependent upon each person. He must seek new contacts. He must have wide and varied interests. He must not allow himself to be hemmed in by group thought or group action. People of all ages should be encouraged to have their own thoughts, their own ideas, their own personalities. In that way there can be advancement. Sir Richard Burton wrote: Be thine own Deusg make self free, Liberal as the circling air: Thy thought to thee an empire beg A Break every prisoning lock and bar. THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 Page 133 A normal amount of cooperation is necessary in order to live happily. You must always strive, however, to keep your identity free. Do not be bound by the tenets of other people. I wish to express the feeling of gratitude and thankfulness with which our hearts are so full. To you, Mr. Roberts, as principal, our debt is a great one. Throughout our four years you have been untiring in your efforts to lead us toward the goal which we achieve tonight. I thank you for the Class of June, 1933. You, our teachers, have been ever-present preceptors. You have taught us cheerfully and well. VVe are better for having known you and been under your guidance. We shall never be able fully to repay our obligation to you. We are fully cognizant of it, however. The class is deeply appreciative of what you have done. My classmates- after tonight we shall never meet again as a unit. We have worked side by side for four years, striving for an end which is at last accomplished. VVhen we leave to- night we shall carry with us the indelible memory of our years at VVest Philadelphia High School. I have just one more word: To thine own self be trueg And it must follow, as the night the day, .Thou canst not then be false to any man. Farewell. Page 134 THE RECORD OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1933 PROPHECY ldillilillf-li p The depression is over and once more people are applying for positions. The President has created an information office in Philadelphia for the school graduates. Many of VVQ-:st Philly's students take advantage of this bureau and send Morton Greenwald as their delegate to investigate possibilities. jack Lyons, the manager of the bureau, and his assistants, Bernard Wolk and Ben Greenbaum, turn to their hles and give Morton a list of positions which are available.
