The Congregation of the Religious Sisters of Mercy was founded by Catherine McAuley, in Dublin. Ireland, December 12, 1831. In 1843 the Sisters of Mercy arrived in New York. enroute to Pittsburgh where they had planned to establish missions under the guidance of Mother.Mary Francis Xavier Warde. Rapidly the Community spread its branches throughout the United States: then answering the distant call for help Sisters have been sent to India to establish hospitals. nursing schools, orphanages, and to conduct schools for Christian education of youth. The Sisters of Mercy, now numbering twenty-eight hun- dred. devote their energies to spiritual and corporal works of mercy. They staff elementary and secondary schools. a junior college. nursing schools and hospitals, vocational schools, orphanages, homes for working girls and institutions for the mentally handicapped. The Shield of the Sisters of Mercy dates back to the time of the Crusades.
