To care for the education of the poor, Mother Rose julie Billiart, of l'icardie, France, founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. February 2, l804. So rapidly did her work grow, so blessed by God have been the efforts of these Sisters that foundations are now located in all parts of the world: the United States. Europe, Asia, and Africa. All spiritual and corporal works of mercy are their work-, in the hospitals, schools-elementary and high-colleges, vocational, as well as the schools for the underprivileged. The Franciscan spirit will best serve the needs of the church there. The community. now numbering over sixteen hundred, stem from their motherhouse, Glen Riddle. The Congregation of the Religious Sisters of Mercy was founded by Catherine McAuley, in Dublin. Ireland, December 12, 1831. In 1843 the Sisters of Mercy arrived in New York. enroute to Pittsburgh where they had planned to establish missions under the guidance of Mother.Mary Francis Xavier Warde. Rapidly the Community spread its branches throughout the United States: then answering the distant call for help Sisters have been sent to India to establish hospitals. nursing schools, orphanages, and to conduct schools for Christian education of youth. The Sisters of Mercy, now numbering twenty-eight hun- dred. devote their energies to spiritual and corporal works of mercy.
