Sister Letitia Maria. S.S.-I. asserts, A spirit of friendliness reached out welcoming hands to the new faculty and students in September. 1927. making our Hrst days at West Catholic ones to be remembered. As one of the pioneers, I found the venture most attractive-an opportunity for the planting of new ideas and ideals. The mere 1300 students made possible a close contact between pupils and teachers. contacts which have endured to the present day. Soon the launching of projects and activities of various kinds tested the depth of loyalty in West's new occupants. And they were never found wanting! Enthusiasm and generosity greeted each activity and carried it on to a successful finish. whether it was a plea for some poor missionary, or a drive to boost the buying of bonds and stamps during the war years. It is a long way back to 1927. but the original West Catholic spirit still lives. True, some of the personal touch has been lost in the crowd of almost 3,000. but the same happy faces gleam throughout the school, and the early enthusi- asm is kept burning. ready to leap into action whenever the trumpet calls for God or country. I have found little change at West along the yearsg and it is my fervent prayer that the same spirit of enthusiasm, generosity, and charity that marked our beginning days. will march gallantly on through many years to come. Ask even the lowliest chicken. and he will tell you he can't get along without one. Chicken hearts take on a new meaning. though. when the unpredictable Esther Clsabel Bondj hears about a superstition that promises that if you eat the heart of a chicken whole the first man that shakes your hand will marry you.
