'T'-L-I-E C-3L.'Ef-C1f'Y1 1Q55 SCHOOL HISTORY T HE founding, eight years ago, of the West Phila' delphia Catholic Girls' High School is a tribute to the zeal and foresight of those entrusted with the administration of Catholic education. So large had become the enrollment at the John W. Hallahan Cath' olic Girls' High School that another school of equally high scholastic standing was felt to be needed. And West Catholic came into being. West Catholic is not an old school. How, then, account for our wealth of tradition? For this we are indebted, in part, to our sister school, but to that inheritance has been added the personal touch which makes it West Catholic's own. Each year has been responsible for some delightful addition to custom that has become a tradition. Thus, in brief glimpses, the year unfolds itself: An olden, golden custom which integrates the whole year is the weekly Mass, when the Divine Guest comes to our altar. Early in the term we have the inspiring ceremony in which the Student Government Olhcers are inaugurated. Next comes Freshman Day, when the little Greenies are initiated, to the joy of their big sisters, the Seniors. The Yuletide is fittingly com- memorated in a dramatization of Bethlehem's holy story. In February the Seniors present their play. Later as a culmination of Junior Week comes the junior play. Athletically, there are swimming meets and thrilling basketball games. Late April or early May brings the Music Festival, when Orchestra and Glee Club capture us in a web of magic melody. And throughout the year there are lectures, marionettes, Shakespearean readings, and other diversions for the weekly assembly. , Class Day, the last formal gathering of the Seniors, is the students' farewell and West Catholic's most def lightful custom. There is no brusqueness, no hurry in the leaveftakings. Goodfbyes are long, fervent, a bit sad, but robbed of finality by the promise of meetings on Alumnae Days Thus from Freshman Day to Grad- uation Day, West Catholic's students hold communion with those spirits that inspire to greatness, that give to the mind strength and intrepidity, to the soul splendor and glory.
