The colorful posters, friezes, and paintings that pulwlici:e Vv'cst Catholic's activities, to say nothing of the f'unnies, cartoons, and etchings in the Reaper and fiI.li.XM, are all the result of the Art Departinenfs divine unrest. Besides the study of formfandfcolor and of technique, many of the art periods are devoted to the study and class discussion of the lives of classic and modern painters. The critical dissection of masterpieces, of contemporary paintings, that is conducted in the class periods, inculcates in the art student a knowledge and love of the lweautiful, a critical discernment, an appreciation of the hest in art, while at the saine time it trains her in creative expression. Last hut not least, the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus manage skilfully the school stationery shop whose clever window displays are an everfpresent urge to the shopping instinct. I -I-4-E Gil..-Ef-CIFYW 193 HE aim of Hygiene, as someone has so aptly said, is to improve the quality of life. Quite naturally then, this suhject, taught hy the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, Philadelphia Foundation, finds a place in the education of the West Catholic student. The Hrst objective of this course is to promote good health in the individual: another important outcome is a very desirahle and necessary civic spirit. The interdependence of community health and personal health is constantly emphasized, for on the youth of today rests the responsibility for the community of tomorrow. Practical hygiene at West Catholic is under the direction of Miss julia O'Halloran, a graduate nurse, who presides most efliciently over a completely equipped infirmary. Through the daily visits of Dr. Emilie Burke and Miss O'Halloran's constant care, the health of the student hody is wisely safeguarded. MARY E. T. MCGowAN, '35.
