JOSEPHINE ANTONELLI, '3 5 'T'-L-I-E C-3L.'Ef-C1f'Y1 1Q55 SCHOOL HISTORY T HE founding, eight years ago, of the West Phila' delphia Catholic Girls' High School is a tribute to the zeal and foresight of those entrusted with the administration of Catholic education. So large had become the enrollment at the John W. Hallahan Cath' olic Girls' High School that another school of equally high scholastic standing was felt to be needed. And West Catholic came into being. West Catholic is not an old school. How, then, account for our wealth of tradition? For this we are indebted, in part, to our sister school, but to that inheritance has been added the personal touch which makes it West Catholic's own. Each year has been responsible for some delightful addition to custom that has become a tradition. Thus, in brief glimpses, the year unfolds itself: An olden, golden custom which integrates the whole year is the weekly Mass, when the Divine Guest comes to our altar. Early in the term we have the inspiring ceremony in which the Student Government Olhcers are inaugurated. Next comes Freshman Day, when the little Greenies are initiated, to the joy of their big sisters, the Seniors. The Yuletide is fittingly com- memorated in a dramatization of Bethlehem's holy story. In February the Seniors present their play. Later as a culmination of Junior Week comes the junior play. Athletically, there are swimming meets and thrilling basketball games. Late April or early May brings the Music Festival, when Orchestra and Glee Club capture us in a web of magic melody. And throughout the year there are lectures, marionettes, Shakespearean readings, and other diversions for the weekly assembly. , Class Day, the last formal gathering of the Seniors, is the students' farewell and West Catholic's most def lightful custom. There is no brusqueness, no hurry in the leaveftakings. Goodfbyes are long, fervent, a bit sad, but robbed of finality by the promise of meetings on Alumnae Days Thus from Freshman Day to Grad- uation Day, West Catholic's students hold communion with those spirits that inspire to greatness, that give to the mind strength and intrepidity, to the soul splendor and glory. Among the most important of these are the four annual retreats, -rrf -two days spent in prayer, recollection, and conferences supervised by carefullyfchosen retreat masters. Again the Sisters see to it that the day-afterfday monotf ony of the school year is broken here and there by lectures on subjects entertaining and cultural. The Nlollipopfdelightsu of Freshman Day and the excitement of junior Week come in for their share of attention. The Christmas Play, the Senior Play, and the junior Play are all the results of their capable organization. In November comes the Annual Card Party and Promenade, involving many details. Class Day, with its cherished favors, and the Senior trip are memorable occasions because of their thoughtful planning. Graduation exercises in Convention Hall, the culminating point of the year, are, in themselves, an undertaking requiring long weeks of unremitting preparation and administrative skill. West Catholic sponsors the Reaper and the GLFXM. The former, a newspaper, is a monthly puhlication through which a student staff of editors, trained in the newsfwriting classes, keeps West Catholics little world apace with the events of the hour. ln this field a student may develop her talents as an editorial writer, a chatty columnist, a stat' reporter, or a cartoonist. The GLEAM, a literary magazine, is puhlished semi' annually. The midfyear numher, consisting of stories, essays, poems, and feature articles, is an incentive to the latent literary ahility of the student hotly. The graduation edition, with its pictures of students and numerous activities, is a memory hook for future years. Ever alive to new currents of thought, while holding fast the hest of the past, the Sisters of St. joseph chart the course of our puhlications. C.ixTHiiRiNri Ulla.-xiw, '35 Ezglit 'T-I-I-E SLE-QFYN 1935 USIC in West Catholic is taught and supervised by three Sisters of St. joseph, whose work is grouped under two general classifications: Curricular and extraf curricular. For Sophomores, the former entails two periods a week of theory of music, for Seniors and Freshmen, assembly singing. The Senior Class is fostered as a unit for choral. Because of their numbers, the Freshmen pre- sented some difhculties in the early part of the year, but each problem child is now met twice a week at a study period assigned especially for music. The extrafcur' ricular work embraces the Glee Club, Orchestra, and Band, the members of which receive individual and group instrucf tions from the most competent professional teachers. The direction of the dramatic activities is delegated to Miss Margaret Mary Kearney, who as a coach has carried through nearly all ventures in this Field during the school's short history. ln addition to this, Miss Kearney conducts a Public Speaking Class where the students pursue the charm that lies in a cultured voice. Thus in classroom teaching of English and music and in multifarious student activities, the Sisters of Saint joseph serve West Catholic. GENEVIEVE MYRTETUS, '35. Sisrnrt SISTER M. CQNSOLATA N West Catholic, the Sisters of Mercy and Latin are almost synonyms, for it is they who open to the students the doors of classical learning. In the first year, the fun- damentals of Latin grammar are drilled: at the same time, a large proportion of the vocahulary is acquired. Czesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wzirs is assigned to second year pupils for reading. The third year hrings Cicero, Rome's iinest prose writer. Then the culmination of three years' study is attained when the students reach the Vergil Classic. By their extensive preparation, they are equipped to appreciate fully the wonderful poetry of this lvenevolent enchanter of mediaeval legends. To supplement the regular Latin schedule, the Sisters of Mercy organized a Latin Cluh this year for the purpose of weaving a stronger classical hackground in the girls' minds 'md refinitiating them into the mysteries of mytholf ogy. However, music, the constellations, and dramatics have not heen neglected. The cluh has presented many interesting plays, including Pyramus and Thishef' The judgment of Paris, A Roman Christmas, and Latin Grammar, Eager to learn, the enthusiastic memhers adopted this slogan, Crescat Scientiaf' ELSIE J. G.-XLLAGHER, '35. Sixteen -r-4-i-E ecenm 19335 HE Sisters of Mercy do not, however, confine their acuvities solely to the teaching of Latin. In their hands also is the Guidance Program for the entire student body. The purpose of this work is to adjust the student to her social environment by training in selffcontrol, courtesy, and cooperation. It also presents to the student the various vocational fields, striving to enable each girl to understand her capabilities and shortcomings and to avoid the placing of round pegs in square holes. During the past year this work was exemplified in two plays, In Life's Gift Shop and High Ways. At the head of this work is a Sister known as Student-Counsellor, who is always accessible to a student in any dilliculty and who strives by individual attention to prevent malfadjustments to the school environ- ment. In addition to this, the Sisters of Mercy are in charge of the Apostolic Unit of Catholic Action, and have the general direction of all Catholic Action activity in the school. ELSIE J. To these Sisters also is entrusted the privilege ol' the sacristan. Vtfith shining gold and colorful flowers, they prepare the throne for the coming of the Author of All Science. CATHERINE KANE, '35. Quite naturally then, this suhject, taught hy the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, Philadelphia Foundation, finds a place in the education of the West Catholic student. The Hrst objective of this course is to promote good health in the individual: another important outcome is a very desirahle and necessary civic spirit. The interdependence of community health and personal health is constantly emphasized, for on the youth of today rests the responsibility for the community of tomorrow. Practical hygiene at West Catholic is under the direction of Miss julia O'Halloran, a graduate nurse, who presides most efliciently over a completely equipped infirmary. Through the daily visits of Dr. Emilie Burke and Miss O'Halloran's constant care, the health of the student hody is wisely safeguarded. MARY E. T. MCGowAN, '35. At first thc Community was represented hy two Sisters, who assisted in the mathematics department and conducted several classes in music. It was not until 1932 that these Sisters were placed in charge of the commercial department, one of the largest and most important divisions of the entire school, The comf mercial students roster almost invariahly includes, along with stenography and typing, the elective hnsiness suhiects and secretarial studies. Dictaphones, ediphoncs, hookkeeping machines, calculators operated hoth hy hand and hy elec' tricity coniptometers. adding machines. and duplicators ot various kinds, in fact every time and lahorfsaving device known in thc modern husiness ollice, are at the disposal ol' the students in the secretarial group. ln addition to this the commercial equipment includes one hundrcd and sixty stand' ard typewriters, where the students acquire speed and accuracy. Through the arduous efforts of the Sisters of Christian Charity, the XVcst Catholic commercial course well prepares students to meet the demands of the modern husiness world. The Student Government Association consists of an executive group composed of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and four Student Counsellors, one from each class. Each section keeps in touch with the central association through its represenf tativc elected hy the students of her group, Utfenders against school law and order are tried and sentenced hy a jury of their peers'-a student court of judges and jurors who hear evidence and pass sentence. Memlwers of this organization are elected hy the students for their qualities of leadership, honor, integrity, courtesy, and selffcontrol. This department is efhciently administered through the combined efforts of Miss Louise La Sala, Miss Flora De Laurentes, and Miss Genevieve Rowley. The Freshmen are initiated into the mysteries of folk and aesthetic dancing. The combined Sophomore and Junior Classes specialize in advanced expresf sionistic dancing and apparatus work-horses, rings, and ropes. Clubfswinging, more apparatus work, and very advanced rhythmic expression comprise the Seniors' schedule. In addition to their class work these teachers ably supervise all extrafcurricular athletics, such as swimming and horse' back riding, with the exception of basketball which is under the capable direction of Miss Sue Dougherty. So, too, in the life of every West Catholic Senior there comes Graduation Day, marking an ending, and initiating a beginning in the life of every girl: As she looks into the past, that day signi' iies an ending, a conclusion of all those knightferrantries that find for their background high school lifeg in relation to the future, it signifies a beginning, an opening of a world that never ceases to need youth, needs you and me and our myriads of sister graduates. That the world is in the throes of an economic depres' sion, that industry has slackened, that skies are smokeless, should not dispirit youth. New ideals, new hopes, new aspirations clamor for expression iii living. New lamps must shine where feeble candles failed to burn. Yet, whether our adventures, yours and mine, be on the peaks of Darien or in the valleys of strife, there will shine faith, the gleam from West Catho1ic's Torch of Truth, her children's heritage. CHARLOTTE SCHWARTZ, '35, Eiglityetwo Bw FX 'X K! 1f...,7,,1- -L Our Leisure Hours 'T'-l-I-E CSLE-CJFYN 1Q35 MUSIC NCE again West Catholic marches ahead! This time to the lively tunes of the Band, our latest activity! This recent addition to the Music Department was organ' ized principally to accompany the basketball team, and the first appearance of this year's squad marked also the debut of the band. As they entered the Gym, resplendent in their blue and gold uniforms, they were greeted with thunderous applause, which has not lessened at subsequent appearances. Despite the fact that the band is tremendously popular in the school-, it can never approximate in importance the Orchestra or Glee Club. Throughout the year the Orchestra lends its enchanting music to the perfecting of such momentous occasions as Freshman Day, the Christmas Play, the Junior Play, and the very important Senior Play. However, it is at the Spring Music Festival that the Orchestra comes into its own. Here, the consistent and diligent rehearsals, under the direction of Mr. Benjamin d' Amelio, have their fruition in a performance of prof fessional finish for an appreciative audience. Finally, it is the melodic strains of the Orchestra which complete the graduation exercises. Equally at home in the lilting peasant melody, the magnificent depth of Gregorian chant, or the delicate nuances of a Latin hymn sung a capello, the Clee Club has won well-deserved laurels on many occasions. They share radio programs with the Orchestra and form a colorful and important part of the Spring Festival. During the past year the efforts of the Orchestra and the Glee Club contributed much to the success of the Mexican Protest Rally held in Convention Hall on February twentyffourth. Such is the important role which music plays in West Catholic activities! But backstage a growing sense of loss was filling the hearts of those seniors who had taken part in the produc' tion, for janice had become the hreath of their very existence and they were loath to leave Colonial charm for this mundane t w e n t i e t h century. jcmice Meredith, adapted from the story hy Paul Leicester Ford, was produced under the competent direction of our ahle dramatic coach, Miss Margaret Mary Kearney. The story opens on the eve of the Revolutionary War and moves swiftly for' ward to the climax-Washingtcmn's cross' ing of the Delawarefconcluding with the surrender of Cornwallis. Throughout the play runs the love story of Janice Meredith WUI T4-4-E CE-L.-E-CXFYI 19,35 and Colonel john Brereton, former bond- servant of Squire Meredith. In the end Janice follows the example of Cornwallis and surrenderskto the man she loves. Mary Lovett as capricious, lovable Janice captured the hearts of her audience as com' pletely as she captivated the British red' coats. Mary Flavin, as the dashing hero, Colonel Brereton, alias Charles, made romantic hearts beat fasterg Suzanne Campbell as the swashbuckling Colonel Rahl, delivering English gallantries with a German accent, was an immediate suc' cess. Lord Clowes, the villain, played by Jean Chidsey, was sufficiently realistic to merit the intense dislike of the spectators. But why enumerate when the entire cast united in presenting a performance of prof fessional ease and finesse. For actors and audience Janice Meredith will live long, a cherished memory. The midfyear issue is a literary number, holding fast' caught our most pretentious strivings. Here every girl possessed of literary ability finds a home for her brain children. The june publication is the Senior's own book, a record of the golden dreams of youthful years, Inscribed here is the history of the activities, the friendships, the guidance which have moulded a YVest Catholic graduate. We are young, but we have a past. In 1928 the first GLE.-XM appeared, lighting its torch at the traditions of the mother school. This substantial volume might be termed our baby book since it gives an account of all West Catholics firsts. In 1951 we grew ambitious and inaugurated the present system of publishing two issues a year. Recognition and journalistic honors have increased our natural pride in the annual To these past achievements the class of 1935 adds two numbers, worthy, we believe, to rank with their predecessors. MARY E. T. MCGOWAN, 35. ' V s 'T'-l-4-E CSLE-QFD IQ35 THE REAPER N OCTOBER 1933 the Reaper became an experiment. Before this time the literary magazine, THE GLEAM, was the only journalistic activity in the school. The popular appeal which the Reaper quickly made to the student body prompted the formation of a newsfwriting class in which a staff is trained for work in this field and for appreciation of news values. In order to justify itself educationally, this course gives a training that will be of value to the student who has no thought of entering the journalistic profession and no special interest in its technique. It teaches young people to read the news' paper intelligently, to discriminate in select' ing periodicals, to support the better type of journalism, and to get the greatest benefit out of their newspaper reading. For those who are thinking of the writing profession as a career, it provides a try' out and perhaps the Hrst steps. MARY MCCABE, '35, 1 L7 angel' q ','L'lmf !'l-TE A... The Leaders' Club is ideal for such lassies. This club was formed to train the students in gym work so that they might aid the teachers with the large classes. At the beginning of this term the club adopted a new feature. Besides receiving stripes and a letter L to wear on her gym suit, each girl was presented with a Leaders' Club pin, which she forfeits should she fail to fulfill her duties. The Leader is a model of neatncss, courtesy, and diligence. Taking roll call and assisting the teachers with assigned groups are her chief duties. The work is difhcult, but the students selected for the distinction appreciate the opportunity given them for leadership. The most important event in the life of a Leader is the overnight L'hike which takes place every spring.
