Beverwyk J ms tate s top 1011 t for career seorm By Dan I-'leser The Grand Rapids Press West Ottawa High School girls basketball coach Mary Nienhuis was cleaning some files this season when she came across a list of Michigan high school girls career sconng leaders that did not mclude her sconng star guardlforward Karen Beverwyk ln other words it was missing a 'eader Since Beverwyk has been clean ing up during her senior season Nienhuis made some phone calls and calculations That sconng list has been updated lt undergoes an other revision every time Bever wyk takes the court l knew last year when she passed I 000 points it was a mile stone Nienhuis said I wasnt aware of what it took to get in the top 10. What it took was Beverwyk s 38 points against Grandville on Friday night. That gave her 1 765 career points and moved her from llth place to ninth among the state s all- time scorers. With a regular-season game and at least one toumament game left Beverwyk could finish as high as seventh on this list. It makes me feel good said Be- verwyk who was a unanimous all- state selection last season. Then she smiled and shrugged She scores the points but she never has been one to count them. Karen has never been one to be up on stats Nienhuis said. Maybe that s a good idea. An ac- countant would have trouble keep- ing up with her. Nienhuis has com- piled a whole page of Beverwyk s career statistics. She could probably do another page just on Beverwyk s lasfseven games. Call them the Magnificent Seven. Just consider: o Beverwyk, who scored 274 points during her freshman year, has scored 217 points ta 31 points- per-game averagey in those games. o Beverwyk, the school's career scoring leader, has come within shooting distance of the school's single-game 'scoring record 440 points set by Deb Steketee in 19723 twice dunng this stretch with 36 points against Grand Haven and 38 Fnday 0 Even this stretch s low game 25 points against Mona Shores would be a high for most For the season Beverwyk is averaging 24 6 points per game On top of that she s averaging nearly ll rebounds and four steals per game She plays guard forward and even jumps center Nobody has asked her to sing the national anthem yet Maybe that s coming At any rate she has put up those basketball numbers for a Panther team that was young and mexpen enced this season Opponents sin gled out Beverwyk for greater at tention from the start Coaches would be sitting over there yelling Get no 14 Nien huis said. She said everything from a man- to-man to a diamond-and-one zone has been used against Beverwyk. Mona Shores even used a 1-'R zone with a chaser. fMona Shoresl might have called it a diamond or a box-and- one Nienhuis said. Whatever it takes to trap Bever- wy . ln the beginning it was harder for me said Beverwyk who has put aside any college consider- ations until after the season. I m trying not to let it bother me any- more. She has stayed out of traps by developing strong moves from both the left and the right side. I m moving better going to the left but I still feel better going to the right Beverwyk said. Nienhuis feels best if she can get Beverwyk some time on the back line. Her defense can create her of- fense, which has helped during that seven-game stretch. So have her teammates. Nien- huis said center Pam Meurer has been hitting for double figures dur- ing this stretch, and that's taken some defensive pressure off Bever- wyk and helped her score. And score and score and score and score . . . All Area Champion Karen All State All Conference
