To correlate their work, they use a workbook and practice sets . They publish the SChOOl newspaper, THE BEAR'S PAW, and the yearbook, THE BEAR. This year the department is par- ticipating in more outside activities . The editors of both the annual and the newspaper, along with the ad- visor, attended a journalism Insti- tute for a week in june at Trinity University in San Antonio. Five members of the newspaper staff and their teacher went to a one-day workshop at A.C. jones High School in Beeville in September. October l, a school bus took I9 journalists and the advisor to a one- day workshop at Trinity University. Six staff members of the newspaper and annual with their advisor atten- ded the journalism division of the Interscholastic League Workshop at Texas A Sf I College in Kingsville in November. Students are planning on attending Press Day at the CALLER-TIMES and on entering competitions held by the Interscholastic League . an overhead projector and a number of trans parences that have been pre- pared by the main office. A field trip to a bank will give students an opportunity to see modern bookkeep- ing in action. 433

Fort ALL YoUTH N , K The Physical Education Program is designed in such a manner that it may be used , or partially used, as a screen- ing device in selecting candidates for the athletic teams . The coaches believe that the de- velopment of physical skills is just as important to students as any of the other skills . They believe that good g physical skills have a very direct bearing on the development of all the l rest of the skills . i This year the department is hoping to establish an intramural type pro- gram in at least some ofthe major activities that are offered in P,E,-- activities such as basketball, volley- ball and track. 'Z'l'....'T'J-'7 BUSINESS Business Law class has been study- ing points of law that govern day- to-day activities. The social as well as the individual aspects of law have been emphasized. The class has studied the legality of contracts, labor relations, certain phases of sales, bailments, and insurance. The teacher has taken the students on field trips to observe some law suits and plans to engage in more activities . Shorthand classes have completed learning the theory and are working on increasing their reading and Writing rate. The class is using shorthand records in preparation for the lnterscholastic Meet. General Business classes have been studying banking, stock markets, corporations, the use of credit, and insurance. As a project, students wrote to corporations for information which they will condense and set up as a research paper. 1 Miss Kelso drills students for speed and accuracy. ,..., ,.-,- ,..., , Elia. Navarez gets explanations of shorthand symbols from Mrs. Jimenez. Because typewriting will help the stu- dents in whatever field he chooses , each student is encouraged to develop his skill to compete successfully with any- one who has studied a comparable length of time . The students must work to cultivate such habits as attention to details , con- centration on the task at hand, neatness and appropriateness of form , organization ofwork and materials , open-mindedness and carefulness in following instructions .
