West football season best For many years West high's football team has started its season with a loss to Cedar Rapids. This year, the Falcons smothered Cedar Rapids jeffer- son, last year's state champs 28-12 and Coach Roger Harrington must have had an inkling then that this was going to be a very different year. After that first victory the Falcons gained mo- mentum by defeating the Assumption Knights in their first overtime. jim Hobert was responsible for intercepting a pass which he carried 96 yards to breakthe 7-7tie. There was a momentary break in the streak of wins when West met Dubuque Walhert and fell by one point. West gridders revenged their honor against Rock Island however in a 47-0 homecom- ing victory. With a record of only one loss West seemed ready to take on their arch rival, the Central Blue Devils. Instead, before 8,500 rain soaked fans, West fell to a bitter defeat 27-0. Despite this loss West finished with the best record in the school's history, 7 wins and 2 losses. West's successful season earned them a share of the Metro championship with Central. West also developed the most successful pass- ing-receiving combination in the area with play- ers Terry Rubley and Dave Hettrick.
