To wriTe a hisTory oT WesT T'ligh, as we lcnow iT Today, would be To give an accounT oT The liTe oT Fred D. Keeler Tor The pasT TwenTyfThree years. AbouT The Time Mr. Keeler assumed The principalship oT WesT High School, iT consisTed oT a moTley group oT scaTTered buildings, abouT which The porTable Type was predominanT. Under These condiTions, mo' biliTy and communicaTion were aT a low ebb, while equipmenT, necessary Tor good high school worli, was wholly inadeguaTe3 all in sTrilcing conTrasT with The almosf palaTial appoinTmenT aT The EasT l-ligh School. WiTh such a seT-up iT would noT have been sTrange, had school :,piriT, so essenTial To The liTe oT any school, approached The vanishing poinT. BuT Mr. Keelerls repuTaTion as a School Man had preceded him, and Those who really lcnew him were conTidenT oT The ouTcorne. The whole school, Teachers and sTudenTs alilce, and, in TacT, The whole conn- muniTy, soon realized ThaT a sTrong man was aT The helm, and They have known iT ever since. Through his leadership, WesT T-ligh has become a Truly cosmopoliTan high school, wiTh a naTional repuTaTion Tor The breadTh and Thoroughness oT iTs Training. WiThin iTs walls young men and women may receive The appropriaTe counsel and guidance To enable Them To develop Their personaliTies, and To malce a well-rounded success oT Their school experiences. Mr. Keeler has a peculiar TaculTy oT always lceeping himselT in The background. lT's The Teachers, or The youngsTers, as he calls Them, who are responsible Tor The good worla oT The school. IT is This generous rec- ogniTion oT The eTTorTs oT oThers ThaT has endeared him To his associaTes. Mr. Keeler is one who Teels The ioy oT liTe ouTside oT his immediaTe proTession. T-Tis reading is by no means conTined To boolcs on educa- Tional meThods, Tor iT is doubTTul if There are many, cerTainly noT among The Teaching proTession, who have so wide a range of The besT ThaT has been said and wriTTen, T-le has, Too, whaT unTorTunaTely so many oT us do noT have, a Tine sense oT humor which enables him To enliven The oTherwise drab Things oT liTe, boTh Tor himselT and oThers. SalT Lake CiTy is surely TorTunaTe in having as principal oT The WesT T-ligh School on This, iTs Golden Anniversary, Fred D. Keeler, a man among men----educaTor, ciTizen, Triend. -GEORGE A. EATON.
