Prior To ThaT Time he served The ciTy as police clerk Tor Ten years. and as police judge Tor Tive. This meeTing was held in The CiTy Hall, which now houses The SalT Lake CiTy Fire DeparTmenT. The purpose oT The organizaTion was To Take over The L. D. S. EcclesiasTical Ward Schools and esTablish a Public School SysTem Tor SalT Lake CiTy. The TirsT WesT High School opened in Sep- Tember I8'-70, in The old FourTeenTh Ward building, which was laTer named The FremonT School. AT ThaT Time There was also a small class oT pupils on The EasT side, in The basemenT oT The Scandinavian LuTheran Church, on FourTh EasT and Second SouTh STreeTs. ATTer Two monThs oT work, however, The ciTy Tound iT could noT mainTain Two High Schools, so The ToTal of TiTTy sTu- denTs were combined in The FremonT School. Mr. E. M. Collins was appoinTed principal. BeTore This Time, The ciTy schools had been organized inTo TwenTy- Two wards .... The only requiremenT was The paymenT oT a TuiTion Tee oT Trom eighT To Twelve dollars per year. This arrangemenT daTed back To l849, when, Two years aTTer The pioneers had enTered The valley, nineTeen wards had been organized. ln l89l, The SalT Lake High school was oTTicially organized wiTh nineTy-one pupils enrolled. Mr. Malone was The appoinTed principal. The TirsT high school graduaTion was held June 9, l893, aT The SalT Lake TheaTer, where six girls and Tour boys received diplomas. This number represenTed only Three sTudenTs ouT oT every Thousand oT The populaTion. IT has now increased over Twelve hundred percenT. The FremonT became Too small Tor The sTudenTs, so They moved To The ClayTon Building. The TirsT Tloor oT This building was occupied by a wax works exhibiTion. The enrollmenT oT The school increased so rapidly ThaT even The ClayTon Building could noT accommodaTe Them in I897. The school was moved To The PierponT STreeT Building, which is now The UTah NaTional Guard Armory. Mr. A. O. Clark was appoinTed principal. The TwenTy-Two classrooms accommodaTed everyone, buT The noise Trom The near-by boiler TacTory caused a greaT deal oT annoyance.

G, McCoy as principal. EasT High school soon became The new name. Mr. G. N. Gillilan was principal oT WesT High Trom This Time unril i9l7, when Mr. Keeler was appoinTed. WesT conlinued To grow so rapidly ThaT The cry liWe wanT a new buildingfi broughT resulTs. To The class oT l9l9 much crediT is due.
