T The sfillness of ThaT July day oT I847 was broken by The Tired Thud oT hooTs and The slow creak oT heavily laden wagons. The small company oT pioneers who had been iour- neying Tor sevenTeen monThs TelT only a sense oT weariness and no realizaTion ThaT Their desTinaTion was near. Winding six miles Through a deep canyon, They came suddenly upon The view of whaT we now call Sal+ Lake Valley. An expansive sweep of gray land doTTed by dwarT sagebrush was before Them. To The wesT There glimmered The lighT oT a body oT waTer. To The so-uTh and norTh rocky mounTains reared Their maiesTic Tops above The deserT land. A desolaTe wasTe iT was. yeT iT seemed To Those pioneers a veriTable paradise Tor iT marked The end oT The iourney. They were noT daunTed by The dreariness oT The scene nor by The Task ahead Tor They had The vision To look inTo The TuTure and see homes and happiness. While enduring The many hardships ThaT accompanied Their work of making The deserT habiTable and producTive, The sTalwarT company builded Their homes and esTablished a Tirm governmenT Tor The colony. Many hisTorical landmarks oT Those early days sTill sTand. The TirsT home, having been moved Tor profTecTion, is in The Temple grounds. The Tamous Eagle GaTe has remained in well- preserved Torm since iTs erecTion in I859. The downTown ig.: disTricT, sTarTing from one lone sTore and a posToTTice, has 5: 1 grown up inTo The splendid commercial secTion we now know. Even in The early Times, The necessiTy Tor some Torm oT recreaTion was recognized and The arT oT drama was TurThered by The erecTion in l86l oT The well-known SalT Lake TheaTre. Many in The communiTy obiecTed To- The plan of building a TheaTre. wishing To conTinue work on The Temple instead, buT The need Tor recreaTion was Tinally undersTood and all J '- f-Q' 1' joined in The eTforT ThaT madie This one of The TinesT TheaTres in The counTry. IT remained Tor sixTy-nine years a monumenT To iTs early builders. OTher Tamous beginnings wene The arrival oT The TirsT locomoTive in l87l, The erecTion oT The TirsT baThhouse aT The warm spring abouT IB49, The opening oT The TirsT school near The same Time and The building of The public library in I898. The sTreeT car service, as a beginning had Tor iTs power a span of mules which Tor a number oT years pulled The cars Through The main sTreeTs oT The ciTy aT a raTe of 20 To 60 minuTes To The mile. The speed increasing or decreasing according To The weaTher.
