Hlstory of New Bulldlng HE NEW WEST HIGH bCHO0L IS no longer the source of the dreams of lts manv students but IS now an actual reallty As week by week the semors have wxtnessed the truly remarkable progress made m the constructlon ofthe edaflce they have been thrllled with the knowledge that thelr efforts to put through the bond lssue and so enable Qalt Lake to erect thls wonderful new hlgh school have not been ln vam They look for ward with great pleasure to the tlme when they can see others enyoy mg the many advanta ges whlch w1ll be offered to them wlth the completlon of the new bulldmg and console them elves with the thought that they had at least some llttle part ln brlngmg about th1s con dmon If thelr sprrlt has been a llttle lax lf the1r mterest has been somewhat d1v1ded IS lt not due somewhat to the hardshlps they haye been enforced to endure ln the old bulldmg and the bungalows hastlly thrown up to house them? Wlth the openmg of the new school the spmt wlll f1ll 1ts old place and we shall have an undlvlded West hlgh pullmg toward one goal The old West hlgh school bulldmg so unflt for any use whatever and yet so cherlshed ln the hearts of Its members was torn down last spring several days ahead of the scheduled tlme Almost Immediately all the debrls was removed from the campus the new slte was fenced ln and materlals began to arrive for constructlon Work Accordmg to the present plans the bu1ld1ng w1ll be completed by July 3 1922 and wlll be ready for occupatlon wlth the opemng of the school term 1n September It 1s to be made up of four floors and w1ll contam a masslve audltorlum ln fact the largest rn any school of lts kmd IH the west The ground floor on the south slde wlll be used as the he 1d quar ters of the R O T C whlle the north end wxll be devoted to a cafeteria large enough to accomodate all the students The mam offlce as well as the glrls department w1ll occupy the flrst floor This department wlll Include a model kltchen and laundry dmmg room and bedroom as well as class rooms for dress making and mllllnery The second floor wlll be glven over to the Commerclal department The newest and best of ey erythlng w 1ll be offered to students ln thls department A large well llghted study hall wlll also be located on thls floor The thlrd floor wlll be composed of art rooms a musrc room and the sclentlflc lab ratorles These are also to be equxpped wlth everythmg of the xery best to be offered Class rooms wxll be dlstrlbuted on all the floors throughout the bulldmg occupy mg every ay allable mch of space The audltorlum wlll extend from east to west one half the length of the bulldmg The mam floor orchestra plt and stage will be on the same plane as the flrst floor of the bulld mg a slopmg gallery wxll occupy the space on the level of the second and thlrd floors Stalr cases wlll be bullt on each end of the stage extendmg down from the balcony The entire toundatlon IS composed of 1m1tat1on gramte stone blocks Three shades of red brlck are used IH the walls the walls of the bulldlng bemg composed of sohd brlck wlth only an allowance made for three or four wmdows The furmshmgs on the mslde of the structule wlll be of the very best to flt the needs of the students Each lndlwdual department will be fitted out wlth every convenlence whlle the audltorulm w1ll be equipped with a movmg plcture machme Extensive wlrlng and heatmg wlll be carrled throughout In addltlon tothe new school bulldmg whlch wlll occupy the entlre east slde of the campus the present gym wlll remaln wlth a number of addltlons The remodelmg of the I' aton Gym wlll begm IH the sprmg and w1ll be very extenslxe The present floor w lll be made mto a swlmmmg pool and the audltorulm wlll be used as the glrls gy mnaslum On the east and west ends ot the bulldmg addxtlons w1ll be bullt to contam a thousand lockers for bovs and twelve hundred for glrls A wmg wxll be constructed on the south side whlch wlll ex tend to the edge of the campus The floor wlll be almost as large as any ln the state The Techmcal bulldmg wlth the changes made last year wlll remam The Lommerclal bulldmg wlll stand to he used as nxght school and probably for part tlme school The e bulld mgs will compose the New West hlgh school wlth ample room on the campus for athletlcs and drlll 24.
