The senior class pulled together all of the underclassmen to create a tremendous amount of spirit. The 1982 HESPERIAN portrays a school year with the best of times! The HESPERIAN staff YEARBOOK The 1981-82 yearbook staff was facing a terrible dilema. If the first deadline wasn't met there would be no yearbook. The staff was ready and willing to do everything possible to keep the Hesperian from being eliminated. Selling donuts and a carwash helped to raise the much needed money. The majority of this year's staff was made up of rookies. Many of them knew nothing about layouts or copies, but with the help of editors Joni Biesemier and April Givens the yearbook was a total success! 1 I? 4 V rA k' C r4 O rA 4 K O rA I? k- 'i I? The West High Times covered such features as a fantastic Homecoming edition to a superlative Senior edition. The staff was dominated by seniors. Cries of What?! Deadline's tomorrow?! The sizeable, overzealous crowd cheered their team on with much enthusiasm. Although the score did not match the crowd's high spirits, the evening proved to be one filled with excitement. The night of the Cheerleaders' Dance excitment also filled the air as friends were reunited and new acquaintences were made. This year's turn-out was quite successful; the best it has been in years. These two events marked the beginning of the 1981 schoolyear, always to be remembered as the Best of Times. It's not whoop do doo! Jim B. spares a moment to pose. S A HOLIDAY DANCE This year's holiday season at West brought kris-kringled lockers, N.H.S. candy canes, the Annual Canned Food Drive and a festive spirit throughout the entire school. But before anyone could leave school for the well needed two week winter break, the Student Council sponsored the HOLIDAY DANCE! The dance was held in the new gym lobby, which gave it an exciting new twist, and the KMOJ sound system really kept the yule-log rhythm rolling. Student Council members decorated the lobby to a tee . They really put their all into making this dance almost a success. Step aside. I'll show you how it's done! Other preformers were soloists Denise Thomas, Margaret Blanks, and Valerie Harpole. Dancing was Pot Owens. The school choir sang the Negro notional anthem. The M. C.'s were Nikki Oliver, and Lyn-ette Douglas. The last auditorium was Dr. Reginald Buckner and ensemble ploying jazz music from the last decode. Day Captains Jennie and Ellen Last summer the danceline began their days hard at work kicking. Believe it or not being on the danceline involves much more than owning revealing outfits and numerous amounts of gloves, trunks and pom-poms. Besides dancing to music ranging from Reggae to Punk, this group successfully planned Sadie Hawkins and Highsteppers' Ball. Although during practice migraines and bickering were prevalent, the line always managed to unite and perform well. Jennie's and Ellen's creativeness and love for kicks also helped the line. This year bakesales and carwashes were nonexistant, (THANK GOD) but the selling of other goodies funded them. A poem is needed to make the day; and send us on our merry way. Good-bye to you, our dear old line; I think that you will find us fine. No more ready; and 1,2,3, ... No siree! Led by captains, Beth Nurnberger, Melanie McChesney and Brenda Hanson, these peppy and lively group of girls show-their spirit by relentlessly screaming, cheering and just generally being rowdy. Fans would often wonder where the cheerleaders got their enthusiasm and unlimited energy. But of course it takes an exceptional individual to be a cheerleader. Win or lose these gals were always there to pass out cupcakes, offer congratulations or offer condolences. Cheerleaders added new cheers and different variations to old cheers. All in all, cheerleaders this year added more than enough spirit to the Best of Times at West. J.V. FOOTBALL: L. to ?.; capt. C. YueiH. K. Atmore. D. Obermyer. A. Cherne, K. Mackey, T. Kolhoff, J. The West Ski Club took off to Michigan on Dec. 26, 1981 for their annual ski trip. They arrived at the Bessemer Youth Hostel after driving all the way through a raging blizzard. The group was T.D. gets air. chaperoned by Mr. Hargreaves. They started out the trip by skiing at Black Jack on Dec. 27. It was a warm day and a good day to ski. That night the club went to downtown Ironwood. Some of them saw a movie and others had a busy time at the bowling alley! A few of the members just roamed around the town. The club skied at Indian Head Mountain the next day. It snowed the whole day, making it a great day to ski in heavy powder. The group decided to stay at the hostel that night. They had a fun time while having a snow ball fight, dumping people in the snow, playing games, and watching television. On Dec. 29. the last day of the trip, the club skied at Whitecap Mountain. At 5p.m. they were supposed to be loaded into the bus. Soon after, the last stragglers were loaded on the bus. and they were ready to head for home. Joni and Carol doing K.P. 35 Front. N. Paguyo. M. With this groups expertice the mics will always be on! GOOD MORNING! ... With the dedication of Ellen and Maureen and their two assistants they provide an invaluable service to everyone at West. They inform the entire school of the important activities taking place during the day. Their sometimes humorous and suspenseful deliveries of the morning announcements keep us all updated. Thanks and have a really nice day! CAN I HELP YOU? The aides at West are not always seen but definitely have an effect on the effeciency of our school. The Audio Visual aides are responsible for getting the projectors and other equipment to the teachers. The Office Aides run the switchboard and hand out the daily absentee list. And let us not forget the Library Aides who help the librarian check in and out all of our books. WHAT COULD BE MORE FUN? For some the classes at West are just not enough. They just can't wait to get into the community. Fortunately for these students there is the choice of becoming involved in KBEM radio. Urban Arts, and Work program. These students not only earn credits or money but gain experience. Some of the experiences include broadcasting, the arts, and on the job training. 39 Urban Arts. L. to R. I. Karivs. K. Bruns and K. The West High band, last year, hit an all time low on the music charts. This year, with the dedication and enthusiasm of director William Scripps. and the talented musicians of West High School, a band blasted their way into the top ten once again. Their performances surprised and overwhelmed the student body and will always be remembered as the best of times. The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boys! Rest 2. 3. 4 42 Every morning throughout the 3rd floor halls can be heard the heavenly voices of the daytime choir. This group is also directed by Mr. Scripps. Though the group is small, the effort they put forth doubles their size. Their gloriful voices will always be remembered in the best of times. Through the successful efforts of a few spirited senior women an after school choir was formed. The members have shown great enthusiasm in participating in this extra-curricular activity. The enrollment has grown considerably from the inspiration they project. We are hopeful that this will become a tradition here at West. CHOIR Good morning. Liz! AFTER SCHOOL CHOIR; 1st Row: S. Even when the going got tough, they stuck together and kept up the team enthusiasm. We will always remember their best of times such as Chad Haldeman's touchdown catch against Roosevelt. their great support in the Homecoming parade, Paul Schafer's two touchdown runs against Marshall-U, and. last but certainly not least, the Cowboy's win 20-17 against Southwest. This might not have been a year for scores, but the Cowboy's spirit shone through to become a part of West High's Best of times 47 Back Row L. to R. L. Johnston. M. Mahoney. L. Harrison. S. Streitz. Plagued with injuries and many lost members of the varsity squad, recruiting was essential. From underclass Westies and Anwatiners, Coach Hulet came up with a young spirited team. Practicing everyday with might and dedication on and off the courts, the girls kept up their strive for the perfection and never lost hope. There were many close, yet lost matches, which hopefully can be turned around for wins next year. In the next couple of years, when the team ages a bit. The team was led by four senior captains: John Shulman, Pete Bergner, Jan Knutsen, and Mark Yuen. This sport has finally become popular at West. The team's enrollment has gone up considerably. More and more fans showed up for the games too. One of the team's best games was against the second-ranked team in the state, Washburn. West was leading at the beginning of the game. Then the game was tied. During the last four minutes Washburn scored and won 4 to 3. The team members felt they had an excellent chance of going to the state soccer tournament and also winning the city championship title again. 51 SWIMMING AND DIVING '81' TEAM PICTURE: First Row: Co-Capts. This year when they were faced with the loss of two coaches and the majority of the varsity, this group of girls showed their spirit, toughed it out and proved to everyone that they were going to pick up right where they left off last season. The gymnastics team was just one example of The Best of Times at West. 61 L. to R. J. Knutsen, R. Taylor, K. Buckhalton, A. Kennedy, M. Robinson, Coach William Chamblis, M. Starr, D. Brown, E. West began with a win over Edison in preview, 15-14. This year the team had a height disadvantage compared with other schools, but players are still enthusiastic about winning. The dedication of William Chamblis, the new coach, led the Cowboys through a successful season. Also giving strong encouragement were the captains, Jan Knutsen and Harold Wright. 2 and Danny's makes 3 L L 63 Coach Chamblis studies game plan. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Varsity- 1st ROW L. toR.:A. This made the season one of the best of times. The team was favored by good weather, participation, and terrific team spirit which brought them to second place at the city mixed relay. The team captains: John B., Bruce A., Mike B., and Martha S., along with other members such as DavidS., Carol R., Linda P., and Liz B. led the team to a successful and winning season. The girl skiers were ranked second in the city as the season's ending approached. The boys' team was strong and tough also. They decisively defeated Henry, North, Edison, Roosevelt and many other competitors. 67 •• • 68 STAFF 59 First Row; L. to R; G. Decker, R. Allen. G. Garastik Second Row J. Baxter, J. Behendt. C. STAFF Looking back, the 1981-82 school year was alive with spirit! The West High staff helped to revitalize this attitude with their encouragement of both students and activities. The administration, led by Mr. Robert Lynch, also helped the spirit grow with their never-ending support of West High. The aides and janitors helped the spirit in their own way by allowing students to decorate halls for Homecoming and by being patient when students crowd the halls with their activities. The staff really helped to make this year. The Best of Times! Left to Right: E. Habig. M. Doble. L. Harris. Left to Right: J. Kotowicz. P. Davitch. M. Anonen. J. Wirkkunen, B. Luoma. Fornt Row: J. Juniors are often seen cheering on the teams here at West. Next year they are planning on participating more as well as attending various activities. One activity that is sweeping through the junior class is chewing. Juniors are sometimes heard saying dip time! or dip, dip, dip! If one is not familiar with this new pastime, ask any junior. I'm sure they would gladly explain. The PSATS won't soon be forgotten by these Westies. Firecrackers had shaken up the concentration of the test takers as well as the rest of the student body and faculty. The juniors have almost completed their long journey to seniorhood. One more year and they will be facing life outside of West High. Will they make it? Only time will tell. 95 Tim Adams Kathi Altonen Bis Anderson Chris Arisian Jeonnine Balfour Theresa star Benivides Lauri Baztnet Eden Bart Bjorkstrand 96 Pamela Baker Kevin Buckhalton Jayne Bueide Peter Buetted Alan DeFrance Heidi Deatrick Lisa Cotton Tammy Burks Ben Clemence Roxanne Cody Sue Charles Cathy Cargil Angela Carlson Laura Clark Travis Demers Sandy Side Bin Findorff ' S' ,i Dave Eiowson Shawn Fancy Pony Fosu a Lisa Fasching Mike Deyo Steven Filek Lenne FaieHa Janet GridSey Jennifer DeRoche Meg Dun Keith Eberl Rodney Griffin Chris Goodmarson Heidi Gvstavson Deana Gaddy Lavra Goetz Andy Gratz Alec Gross Gretchen Hockley Mike HaH Pat Hall Brenda Hanson Anne Hathaway 99 Amy Housman Egan Haugesag John Hiatt Jenni Noising Roger Hylen Alex Kagan Mohamed Kasstm Amy Kephart Amy Kramer Lee Krislov Conrad Kunz Adam Johnson John Johnson Kim Mahhng John Marcos Jeff Market 100 LeeRoy Marsyla Dawn Martin Jennifer Martin David Martinson WiHiam McKissic Mara Markin Chris Metier Brenda Moseng Marvin NeumH er Lorna Noronha Erik Odiand LeAnn Oetke Gala Oliver Tony Okveri Wendi Olson Liza Paguyo 101 Carol Parker Mark Peterson jm Pussmussen Elizabeth Richey Chris Pimpson Kim Picux Dawn Poss Steve Potman Daniel Pyweck Dawn Sacheck Van Sargent Anna Schermerhorn Jim Schlemmer Perry Smith Sheree Stacker 102 Ben Stokes Sara Streitz Danny Swanson Jeff Triemert Tom Triemert Jim Truman Meghan Welsh Michael Wagner Shawn Wallace 103 SOPHOMORES The sophomores showed their superb spirit everyday in alt possible ways at West this year. The energetic, sparkling youths earned their recognition through their newly found athletic and academic success. The extra homework from biology and geometry classes failed to discourage them. The freshman shyness had completely disappeared. The sophs, silly with enthusiasm, added laughter and life to the halls. Sometimes one can hear sophomores bragging about their great class. When they are seniors will West be ready for such outrageously energetic authority in 1984? 104 Marcus Alston Liz Andrews Robin Arradando Amy Atchinson Brian AxeR Andrea Betts Elizabeth Bokman Joe Booher Sandy Bower Eric Brantmgham 106 Rebecca Brown Kari Brunes John Bueide Curt Bulthuis Deborah Barlow Toby Butler Bin Cortstrom Debbie Carroll Rick Ceste Steve Cody Adam Chase Peter Conery Jan Cornelius Annette Cotton Chris Curtiss Juanita David 107 Douglas Dempsey Adrienne Diercks Lisa Dorumsgaard Lynette Douglas Valerie Downing Dan Flanigan Carl Ftink Chad Foehrtnger Jutie Gaddy Daphne Gaines Laverne Hadley 108 Sharon Halvorson Beth Heidenreich Joe Hendren M Hentges Carolyn Hester Ann lbs Ched thme Ellen Hirshfield Felicia Hyatt Sara Isaac JHi Jackson 109 Andy Johnson Dan Johnson Kristi Johnson Lee Johnson Todd Keating Kenny Keely Teresa Kothoff Bob Lender Diane Lorenz MicheHe Mahoney Shawn Mahoney Kim Mackey 110 Joy Marchenko Brett Masica Rodney Massey Pete M9osovich Jell Mtnneti Rebecca Mitchet) Rhonda Mont eon Emily Morgan Bob Morris Randy Nesteby Tim Norum Jenny Nurnberger Gary Olgatn Nikki Oliver David Otkon Elizabeth Porker JuHe Peacock Jodi Picho Jason Pinkney Dave Opsohl Lisa Rainey Dominic Rigert Christa Rogers Bridget Ronnei Jeff Rorman 111 Ekssa Rotman Chris Rowland Michele Savoge Fred Schaefer Paul Schwartzberg Katie Sewell Pad Siegel Carolyn Sledge Annette Smith Christina Smith Cindy Smith Romefa Somatoh James Sorenson Pod Stately 112 Troy Vlahos Jon WaoSk Lisa Walker Roger Was David Wicklund 113 Chris YueiS FRESHMEN The Freshman class once again displayed their rookieness to the upperclass Westies by forgetting their homecoming sign, becoming tongue tied during two bits and showing up at dances first. Going through a year of trial and error, they finally looked to the Seniors, who gave them the guidence they needed to eventually become sophomores. 115 Tim Ahberg Kevin Alston Autumn Anderson Tony Anderson Richard Atkins Marcia Babcock Eydie Bolcos Mia Beaulieu Mary Bell Brian Benard Kris Birklid Sarah BirkUd Steve Block David Boyd 116 Margarete Burde Suzanne CadweH Mickey Carraher Earl Carter Anne Cherne Chris Chorn Tom Chcrske Ray Christy Shary Cohen Michelle demon Pam Christy Earl Douglas Geraldine Drum Jason Douglas Sonja Erickson 117 Steve Fern Carey Foster Terry Freemen John Funk Mott Gafk Jon Goretz Morion Gilchrist Don Grewe Kris Hanson Louise Hardy Tracy Hardy Margaret Harrison Valerie Horpoie Janice Haws Audrey Heard Jill Jacobson 118 Anthony Jackson Lisa James Leah Jenkins Jason Jones Angela Johnson Erica Johnson Alan Krohuke Eyvonne Johnson Tim Johnson Jonathln Johnson Connie Krouse Mary Kukar Gina Landeen Debra Laslev Karen Lazaretti Jon Lerner Matt Lokowich Craig Mort Kathleen Mason Meridel Maxine Maggie May Marcus McDonald Gary McGill EzeH McKissic Jason Miner Billy Moroin Paul Morain Trina Miller Patrisha Mitchell Roseanne Miller Jennie Morgan 120 Tim Morgan 7 year plan Enk Mors tad Noomi Munzner Owen Murphy Denis Novak Gordon Nyenhuis Denise Obermeyer Deanna Oibekson Micheol CHqum Jon Olson Sherri Orr Paul Paguyo Dory Patria Stephanie Pepera Heidi Petterson JiPhMps Lucy Pirner Kety Radermacher Paul Rees Zolton Ritch Sean Roderborn Jane Roonrad Annette Ross David Roth Ken Scheneman Lisa Schleisman Mary Schrobtigen Jenny Schultz Ron Schwartz Mike Rurdy Bob Scott Martina Scott David Shuknan Jean Schmidt Baron Stnkerfiefd Alexandria Siverston 122 Carrie Smith David Smith Pamela Snaza Brijkumar Somatah Theresa Stenerson Jett Thatacker Denise Thomas Greg Thomas Traci Thompson Greg Thurin Joe Truman Joe Waolk Jolene Waalk Heather Wallace Pauline Wetter 123 Paul wm Alan Williams Chris Wilson Sam Woelem Mike Wolfe 1912 1921 1937 West High, opened in 1908, is closing after seventy-four years. Many changes have occured at West throughout those years. In 1928 the rear addition of the building was built to accommodate a larger student body. 1978 saw the addition of the new gymnasium. The last four years have also seen great changes. West's student population has decreased from 1,143 in 1978 to 750 in 1982. Teachers have come and gone. Most importantly this last year has seen a resurge of spirit and unity in the school. West students have carried on as always through all these changes. They've preservered West High traditions and prepared themselves for their adult lives. West High has always played an important role in its students lives, and all will mourn its dosing. 1942 THE WEST STUDENT OR STUDENTUS ATUS WESTUS La De Da Bags under eyes from late hours of homework Dip pouch Sore biceps from carrying oh-so-many books Stomach contents: 22 chocolate pudding pops The book of rude and disgusting noises Pocket contents: 47c in change, practice schedule and an excuse slip Sore legs and fallen arches from having a locker in the basement and all classes on third floor. 132 Brain bulging with new knowledge on hockey team Ears throbbing from too many loud concerts and stereos A happy heart from four years very well spent Displays school spirit Contains: undone homework. 12 notes to friends and vogue Stomach contains: nothing this week Stain on Jeans incurred from collision with a freshman with grape pop. 133 Gold, flaking ballet slippers PA IRONS Minneapolis Only California Style Body Building and Boxing Gym for Women and Men OLYMPIA GYM THURSTON JEWELERS PAUL WILLIAMS TIRE LANGFORD ELECTRIC JAY KLINE CHEVROLET MOHN'S LAMPTRICIAN SHOP HENNIPEN LAKE LIQUORS SHIPLEY'S DINEPS DPAKE AND JACQUARD DISCO BABY EGG AND I GRIFFIN JEWELPS PEX HARDWARE TEAM ELECTRONICS MARCH 4TH DAVID HACKLEY ALLEN F.
