Junior monkey crown Senior Coconut Queen. Dona Nelson take a step toward leadership. UNDERCLASSMEN The Juniors re-entered West's halls in September with ambition and confidence. Throughout their year they have been preparing to meet the responsibilities which face them os our future leaders. They have supported activities enthusiastically and have progressed scholastically. The Junior Homecoming skit, which fit in cleverly with their slogan: Juniors Are Second To None, exemplified the ingenuity of the class. Note cards became a familiar sight to the busy Juniors who undertook the task of term papers. Facts about the World Wars were painstakingly learned and the word physics was uttered only with a groan I They struggled through college boards and aptitude tests, and prepared their senior programs. As each athletic season ended, the new leaders were picked from the Junior Class. New members to National Honor Society have been named, Hesperian and Times staffs have been chosen, new leaders have been elected, and the whole class has begun to fully realize the importance of its future job. 18

Promise of the Future The Sophomores entered West with a somewhat bewildered enthusiasm. Their main task was to adjust to the traditional and established patterns of the school, and they succeeded well. After they mastered the words to Rouser and familiarized themselves with the confusing room-number system and special schedules, the Sophomores proceeded to adapt themselves to the more rigid requirements of a high school curriculum. The Sophomores produced an outstanding skit for Homecoming. They entered into school activities and joined such organizations as Y-Teens, Hi-Y, and language clubs. They adjusted to the rigorous dicipline in the study hall and studied subjects varying from colonial history to the dissection of frogs. The Sophomores earnestly contributed to West's athletic program, and a few athletes were even promoted to the Varsity. The Sophomores are now confidently looking forward to an equally successful junior year. This is what I call a heavy dote I Rich Andreasson displays the tension of his first Hockey Preview. 19
