CDINNJeAPOUS pueuc LieaAtiY THE 1965 YEARBOOK STAFF OF WEST HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA PROUDLY PRESENTS THE Hesperian THE SPIRIT OF THE COWBOY IS REFLECTED IN THE FACES OF WEST. DAY BY DAY, HIS IDEAS ARE EXPRESSED BY THE CONSCIENTIOUS FACULTY, TAKEN IN BY THE BEWILDERED UNDERCLASSMEN, AND DEVELOPED TO MATURITY IN THE MINDS OF THE CONFIDENT SENIORS. TOGETHER WE MUST ACCOMPLISH EACH TASK WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE COWBOY THAT IS ALWAYS PRESENT IN OUR FACES. THE SPIRIT OF THE COWBOY IS CONVEYED THROUGH THE FEELINGS OF WEST. THERE IS ENTHUSIASM IN OUR ORGANIZATIONS. DETERMINATION IN OUR ATHLETICS. AND SPIRIT IN OUR STUDENT LIFE. ALL OF WHICH COMBINE TO CREATE THE UNLIMITED PRIDE WE SHARE IN OUR SCHOOL. OUR FEELINGS. LIKE OUR FACES, REPRESENT THE SPIRIT OF THE COWBOY. AND TOGETHER THEY CONSTRUCT THE IMAGE THAT IS WEST. The student body as a whole has displayed great scholastic potential. It is evident that the general goals of achievement at West have been high. The outstanding attendance at athletic events and social activities revealed a pride which all Westites have for their school. The student body at West has certainly exemplified spirit and co-operation. It is with a great deal of pride that we salute the Seniors for their fine contributions this year at West. We hope that we have given the Seniors adequate preparation to reach the high goals which they hove set for themselves. 4m JK T FRANK T. JANES Principal MR. We believe that the record of the Class of '65 in terms of good scholarship, in outstanding performances in extra-curricular programs, and in high standards of school citizenship is most commendable. Good traditions inspire pride in one's school, and this is reflected not only in greater loyalty to school activities, but also in the higher standards that students are encouraged to set for themselves. Our best wishes to the seniors and also to those underclass students who shored this year with them. MR. CLAUDE C. LAMMERS Assistant Principal MR. RICHARD DURAND Work Co ordinator MR. Throughout their year they have been preparing to meet the responsibilities which face them os our future leaders. They have supported activities enthusiastically and have progressed scholastically. The Junior Homecoming skit, which fit in cleverly with their slogan: Juniors Are Second To None, exemplified the ingenuity of the class. Note cards became a familiar sight to the busy Juniors who undertook the task of term papers. Facts about the World Wars were painstakingly learned and the word physics was uttered only with a groan I They struggled through college boards and aptitude tests, and prepared their senior programs. As each athletic season ended, the new leaders were picked from the Junior Class. New members to National Honor Society have been named, Hesperian and Times staffs have been chosen, new leaders have been elected, and the whole class has begun to fully realize the importance of its future job. 18 Promise of the Future The Sophomores entered West with a somewhat bewildered enthusiasm. Their main task was to adjust to the traditional and established patterns of the school, and they succeeded well. After they mastered the words to Rouser and familiarized themselves with the confusing room-number system and special schedules, the Sophomores proceeded to adapt themselves to the more rigid requirements of a high school curriculum. The Sophomores produced an outstanding skit for Homecoming. They entered into school activities and joined such organizations as Y-Teens, Hi-Y, and language clubs. They adjusted to the rigorous dicipline in the study hall and studied subjects varying from colonial history to the dissection of frogs. The Sophomores earnestly contributed to West's athletic program, and a few athletes were even promoted to the Varsity. The Sophomores are now confidently looking forward to an equally successful junior year. This is what I call a heavy dote I Rich Andreasson displays the tension of his first Hockey Preview. 19 Juniors Spur Ahead to Higher Goals Abdo oh. AijoH S-'V'io Ab'O omM . Bonold Alp ' . lodd Am% l. Lind- 30 As we seniors reflect on our happy three years of academic accomplishments, activities, and services at West, we cannot help but think, with gratefulness, of the knowledge, experiences, and friendships bestowed upon us by our senior residence. Since our advent as sophomores, we have been aware of the many things that have happened such as the rehabilitation of our school, the winning of the City and Twin City Basketball Championships, the establishment of computer programing, and the unsurpassed academic excellence of Our Senior Class. We can be proud of the great spirit, high standards, upheld traditions, and necessary precedents we have established for our successors. Now we have new horizons to conquer, new acquaintances to meet, and new experiences to encounter. We are prepared. However, in our embarkation, we shall not forget her, whom in guidance we loved. We shall not forget our WEST. A. F. S. STUDENTS — Rey Brasil, Brazil; Roslyn Nairn, New Zealand- Alan Struthers, A.F.S. to Sweden. Through organizations, students have learned to serve, to use their skills, to increase school spirit and to become better acquainted with each other. Student groups learned to serve by organizing and coordinating school activities. This year the Student Council composed a dress code and organized a successful Homecoming. The International Club made A.F.S.'er$ feel at home, and the National Honor Society presented the Macalaster Choral Reading Group in an educational auditorium. Through the Service Club, industrious girls decorated the halls for the Christmas season and made winter sports schedules to inform the student body of coming gomes. Also, the Red Cross Club conducted the annual Red Cross drive to help support the national program. Cultured entertainment and school loyalty were brought to a peak by skilled and spirited students. Dov Rutoff pretents the negotive agrument. I 62 Coordination of the Student Body The Speech and Debate Clubs established fine reputations by winning speech awards. The Art and Drama Clubs collaborated on publicity to make the Senior Class Play a success. The language clubs caroled the student body the week before Christmas vacation. The Band and the West Highsteppers shared their talents with West in the Variety Show and the Spring Concert. The Band and the Steppers also helped the Cheerleaders spork spirit at games and auditoriums. The Cheerleaders certainly showed devotion to their school by supporting and attending all games. The members of Hi-Y and Y-Teens have become better acquainted with each other through their activities. These clubs promoted sincere friendships among the student body by participating in joints , Sadie Hawkins, and Kow-Pokes Kut-Up. These worthwhile organizations have been recorded during the year by the TIMES Staff and are presented here by the HESPERIAN Staff. Talent wolks the treet . TOP ROW: 79 SPORTS Promoter of Physical Growth Cut that out; it ticklesr This year West High looked forward to successful seasons in all sports. With experienced players and teams composed of mostly seniors, the Cowboys began their outstanding athletic year by obtaining third place in football. While football players were traveling to the practice! field, at Lake Calhoun, the cross country team was gaining its experience by working out at Lake of the Isles. After a two-week break between seasons, the Cowboys started daily practice in their winter sports. The wrestlers represented West well by sending three representatives to the region play-offs. New uniforms, holiday tournaments, unexpected victories were all a part of an active season. Spring brought fresh hopes for the athletes. Remembrances of the previous year's champion teams provided inspiration to both the teams and the spectators. Besides the boys' athletic activities, the girls participated in many varied sports. The accomplishments of the team and the hopes of their supporters have made this a memorable year in sports. .. ond Ihof no bull. 80 Got her! . . now here's some good subject matter. Get in there! Football Team Places Third in City The West High Cowboys, predominantly a senior team, marched through a successful season for third place honors in city standings. The team, after making a weak start against South and Marshall, made an impressive showing against defending Twin-City Champions, Central. On paper. West was not considered a threat to the Pioneers, but on the field, the Cowboys played a game that Central will long remember. West, too, will long remember the 20-19 defeat because it became obvious that a victory would have meant a tie for City Championship. After overpowering Southwest 26-7, the Cowboys met Edison for Homecoming at Parade Stadium —a game that ended in a scoreless tie. The highly-spirited Cowboys, with successive victories over Henry and Vocational, played Washburn in the last game of the season. West's Robin Thompson started the scoring in the second quarter with a 74-yard run, but the Cake-eaters soon crossed the Cowboy goal line to tie the score. Before Washburn rooters could finish their school song, John Hovanetz returned the Millers' kick-off for a spectacular 85-yard touchdown run. West finished with a 26-7 win, the first football victory over rival Washburn since an 18-13 win in 1954. All-City honors were awarded to halfback John Hovanetz and end co-captain Tim Harris. Co-captain Art Solhaug and Carter Howell were selected for the second team. 82 BOTTOM ROW: A. Soihaug, J. Hovonetz, J. Brennon, R. Thompson, D. Kuehner, J. Wenz, B. Broeckert, Mgr. SECOND ROW: J. Mike Barta, Larry Kern, John Halonen, Joe Schwartz, Dave Kiel and Tony Wehnes all were ranked high in their respective divisions. The four wins this year were over Central, North, Edison and South. Such games included an upset over Washburn and a 58-55 overtime loss to league-leading Edison. Outfitted in new uniforms, the Cowboys pounded out a 7-2 upset over defending City Champion Henry in the season's opener. Southwest and Roosevelt handed the Cowboys their only conference losses in a league where every game was important. Going into the third period three goals down, the Cowboys came back strong against Washburn; but victory hopes faded out as the final buzzer blew, leaving the game in a 3-3 deadlock. State Tournament bids were cut short when Marshall stopped the Cowboys in a 4-3 sudden death overtime game. Mike Reilly, Brad Karinen, and Tim Harris were recognized as the high scoring line in the city with 52 points. Three swimmers won city championships: Sandy Braman —25 yard backstroke, Leslie Robinson —50 yard freestyle, and Sally Nybeck — diving. The badminton team, coached by Miss Peterson, finished high in the city standings. GOLF TEAM-SITTING: S. Flannery, D. Hall. STANDING: L Goldner, B. Segal, K. Webster, B. Bolstod. This year the student body seemed to be a very individualistic one, and therefore the expression in their daily life has been quite interesting to record. While Westites participated in Homecoming, Sadie Hawkins, senior elections, the class play, Sno-Day, and Kow-Pokes Kut-Up, it was easy to observe how the faces and feelings were altered from strained athletic or scholastic pressures to situations where they were at ease. By understanding what the activities were and how the faces and feelings varied, it is possible to realize what the Cowboy is; a complex character of puzzling moods. The Spirit of ’65. 100 • . ■ or o W t Homocoming done . 101 Some Enchanted Evening As she gracefully swayed out wild Hawaiian war chants, Miss Minnesota, Barbara Hasselberg, took our student body by surprise and stunned the male populus of West. This amazing performance opened our 1964 homecoming activities, and the coronation of our lovely queen, Bonnie, followed at 9:30. Throughout the day classes were held in half hour shifts, and all-day passes were issued to frantic club members and industrious student council committeemen as they attempted to organize the activities of the afternoon. At 1:00 the skits were presented in honor of the court to the enchanting theme of the South Pacific. After an outstanding auditorium, our homecoming parade, consisting of the band in full uniform, the club floats, the court, the West High Steppers, and the cheerleaders led off down Hennepin Avenue past many local businessmen and the gradesters of Calhoun and Jefferson. Q.T.'s won the float contest with Tie up the Toms. The weather was superb for the Cowboys to defend the honor of our school, but, as it turned out, we didn't Beat the Tom Toms. The game ended in a 0-0 tie; however, our spirits weren't diminished in the least, for the Westites whooped it up at the Columbia Chalet to the beat of the Coasters. Many completed the evening with a late dinner at the Normandy Kitchen and it certainly was a perfect day for all. A command for the festivities to begin . Daisy Mao, Charlotte Henry, and Marr in Sam, John (the Greek) Cotsaounit. on a Large Scale On Friday, November 13, the candidates for Daisy Mae and Marry'in Sam were presented in a parody of the Homecoming auditorium. They ran wildly down the aisles, and after the activities of each had been listed, the entire school voted on them. Following in the tradition of Sadie Hawkins Day, this dance was a turn-about, and girls not only invited their own fellows, but they paid a penny-a-pound for admission and then provided their dates with a vegetable corsage and dinner. All couples were dressed in burlap, rags, or denim, and while some were getting hitched by Charlotte Henry and John (the Greek) Catsaounis, others were square dancing to the calling of Luke or having their pictures taken. The whole affair, sponsored by Y-Teens, was held in the boys' gymnasium from 8:00 to 11:00, and had a very carefree atmosphere despite the unlucky date. Senior Elections On October 6, 1964, after a full week of campaigning, the school assembled in the auditorium to view the candidates for senior class offices as they presented their various skits, gimmicks, and speeches. The upperclassmen balloted on Raleigh Glassberg, Jane McIntosh, Nancy Rinker and Linda Smedman for the offices of secretary and vice president; and on Dan Jackson, John Peffer, and Alan Struthers for the positions of treasurer and president. The P.A. system announced during third hour that the students hod chosen Raleigh Glassberg as vice president, Jane McIntosh as secretary, Alan Struthers as treasurer, and Dan Jackson as class president. Though all candidates were well-qualified, seniors agree that our officers are outstanding personalities and excellent leaders. Honest to goodness . . . drinking fountain monitor two years running? Tartuffe, a Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing Moliere's Tartuffe was presented by the senior class on December 11 and 12. This French play can be classified as both dull sotire and broad farce. The cast did a superb job with a play which is rarely attempted by high school performers. The audience was delighted with the hideous hypocrisy of Tartuffe (Tom Witheridge), the blind but sincere devotion of Mr. Orgon (John Goetz) to Tartuffe, and the realistic humor of the maid, Dorine (Uve Baltins). The capable direction of Miss Marshall was evidenced by the excellent stage business and precise timing which gave a professional tone to the acting. The back-stage activity involved the construction of the sets and props, the creation of the costumes, and the work of the understudies. All of these centered in the play production class and without their contributions, the perfection of the performance would not hove been achieved. “In a moment I (hall do you an injury! Amid the activity of booths offering such things as a sponge throw, a fortune-telling agency, and a telegram station, Cowboys and Cowgirls looked on gleefully at the dismayed victims of our Kangaroo Kourt, or clapped and stomped themselves into a frenzy under the square-dance calling of Leroy Fish. The tension grew until at last King Tom Griffin was crowned by Queen Bonnie, and the remainder of this annual event was finished out by a continued Cowboy-style celebration.
