COINhjeAPOUS PUOL1C UOttAttY HESPERIAN 1964 WEST HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA FOREWORD Fifty-five years ago the first annual staff of West High School chose Hesperian, Star of the West, as the title of its book. Today, it is still an appropriate name, for the points of the star are the reflections of our school: the academic life, the underclassmen, the athletics, the organizations, the student life, and the seniors. We, the 1964 Staff, would like to present the year to you in this Hesperian. These are our classes, our teachers, our clubs and activities; these are our teams, our games to win or lose; these are our opportunities. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction ................ Assistant Principal 16 Administration Commends Student Body The student body of West High is to be commended for the fine spirit of teamwork which is always evident in every undertaking. It is a privilege to work and serve in a school where the academic interest and the enthusiasm are so outstanding. As we bid farewell to you seniors, we hope that we hove provided you with the necessary background of information and skills so that you may be prepared to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Our best wishes go with you. Despite the increase in the tempo of school activity at the end of the year, this is a time for reflection. It is a time when classroom teachers and members of the office staff recall, with grateful appreciation, the positive contributions which so many students have made in maintaining the fine traditions of West High. It pays to help build a better school, for the more you give, the more you will receive. Best wishes to all. MISS ESTHER PAULSON Librarian MISS KARLOTTE THOMPSON Librarian MR. Teamwork: Key to Cowboys’ Success West High's football team was the big surprise of the City Conference. The Cowboys, not considered to be a title contender, shocked the pre-seoson critics by winning their first four games. The greatest upset was a 12—7 victory over Southwest, who hod previously beaten the number-one-roted team in the state, Washburn. The Cowboys played flawless football against Southwest, with aggressive line play by tackle Mike Miller, hard running ground attacks by half-backs Bob Brothen and John Hovanetz, and outstanding punting by quarterback Dave Baldridge. Teamwork was the key word in the Cowboys' victories, with each player putting forth a maximum of effort. Special recognition was given to quarterback Dave Baldridge and tackle Mike Miller who were named to the Star and Tribune's All-City Team, and to end Ted Nixon who was named to the second team. Bob Brothen was chosen by his teammates os the Most Valuable Player. Co-Coptoini: Tony DeMont® and Mike Miller. 56 BOTTOM ROW: B. Whire, D. Baldridge, B. Brothen, A. Sol-houg, J. Hovonetz, C. Harriers Smash Record Times This year West High's Cross Country team had its most successful season since 1959, posting a 6—3 dual meet record and a fourth place finish in the city meet. The 1963 team produced the best times ever run by a West Cross Country team. The team's six wins were over Marshall, Edison, Vocational, Washburn, Henry, and Blake. Its losses were to State Champion Southwest, city runner-up Central, and Washburn. The team also took twelfth in the state-wide Duluth Swain Invitational Meet. The highlight of the season was the fourth place finish in the city meet. During this meet, co-captain Dick Steiner broke the school record for the grueling 1.8 mile course. The City Championship is the goal of all athletic teams, and the 1963-64 West High basketball team reached this goal for the first time in the school's history. The Cowboys won the City and Twin-City Championship, and posted an undefeated schedule in seasonal competition. West's first loss, which was in the semi-finals of the District 17 playoffs, came at the hands of a determined Central quintet. Under the expert direction of Coach Dave Primrose, the Cowboys crushed defending city champion North in the opening round of conference play. Sparked by Dove Baldridge and Mike Miller with 24 and 22 points respectively, the Cowboys built an insurmountable lead. North, a pre-season title favorite, could not match West's accurate shooting and flawless team play. In a game that helped decide the City Championship, West subdued her arch rival Washburn. The contest, witnessed by 5,000 enthusiastic fans, featured vicious rebounding and adept passing by the West team. A third trophy was added to West's possession with two wins in the Orono Holiday Tournament. The success of West's winning season can be attributed to its balanced scoring and its outstanding team play. The Cowboys olso received the unique distinction of placing three players on the all-city first team. They were Dave Baldridge, forward; Mike Miller, guard; and Ted Nixon, center. Baldridge and Miller were also placed on the all-district team. 60 STARTING FIVE Mike Miller Gordy Morrill Ted Nixon Dove Baldridge Bob Brothen 61 Dove Baldridge saves pas against Ted Nixon hit from th© outside. A New Coach in a Progressive Year This year's hockey team, under the supervision of new head coach Jim Baxter, posted a 4 and 6 conference record. The team was handicapped by the loss of last year's starters, since only three lettermen were returning. Aided by Coach Baxter's skating drills, and the building of a miniature hockey rink, the team showed improvement as the season progressed. With the return of ten lettermen next year, the prospects for finishing high in the standings are very promising. Howell feels impoct of Central check. Underclassmen Spark Wrestling Team Coptain Mike Gilbertson with Coach Rasmus- The West High wrestlers, coached by Al Rasmussen, had many obstacles to overcome this year. The team, losing eight starters from 1963, looked toward the underclassmen for the team's nucleus. The team had a 2—8 dual meet record. The big win for West was the victory over perennial wrestling power Vocational. Individual standouts were Senior, Jim Cedar, who went undefeated in the city competition; and Junior, Dave Keil, who finished second in the District 17 meet and represented West in the Region 5 meet. Four factors contributed to the success of this difficult play by Oscar Wilde. First, modern dress was chosen for added interest, rather than using the dress of the late nineteenth century. The dialect was well-mastered by members of the cast. This helped to add feeling to the drawing room scenes. In addition, the play showed, through the interpretation, that it was well-understood by the cast. In this way the situation was made more vivid to the au- dience. Last of all, the management over the entire play was exceptional. Leading roles were held by Janet Conn as Lady Windermere, Warren Dorn as Lord Windermere, Bill Stroud os Lord Darlington, and Kathy Kuberro as Mrs. Erlynne. These, along with the supporting cast, greatly impressed both students and adults with their performances. Mr. Keyes and Barry Peterson, student director, presided over the entire production. Seniors Accepted and Carried Out Responsibilities As we seniors close West's doors for the last time, we must pause and look back on our three years here. We hove seen West during her greatest period of transformation. This year alone, we have seen new science labs, a revised library, and new executive office suites. We have seen her emerge as a highly rated institution, boasting some of the highest academic and athletic standards in the area. She has become a place of which we can always be proud. However, we must waste little time looking to the past, for the purpose of West has been to prepare us for the future, and she has done her job. Now we must set our goals high and do our best to achieve them, to reflect the contributions of West to whom we owe so much. The Politician Expounds. 84 Roxanne Schumocher, A.F.S. to Germany.
