HESPERIAN 1963 High School Minneapolis, Minnesota importance of WEST HIGH SCHOOL, but it is we, today's students, who really know the living spirit of our school. To us, WEST is the academic spirit of the faculty, the confident spirit of the seniors, the eager spirit of the underclassmen, the co-operative spirit of organizations, the competitive spirit of athletics and the exciting spirit of school life. This 1963 HESPERIAN is designed to reveal through pictures and words the depth of the spirit of WEST HIGH SCHOOL. Foreword WEST HIGH SCHOOL, recognized as a center of our active community, presents various images to different groups of people. Casual passers-by see a dignified, fifty-six-year-old landmark; children see a symbol of their future; alumni look and recall some of the best years of their lives. President Addresses Seniors Mils Boardman and Mike in conference. West, deep in tradition and rich in spirit, is moving into a period of greater distinction. We seniors hove seen a period of tremendous growth in the school enrollment, curriculum ond building improvement. All students of West have profited from these advancements, but we seniors are the most aware of them and the most appreciative. With our graduation we will take many lasting memories of our school. We realize that we have been able to build a strong foundation for our future through the efforts and encouragement of our teachers, the hours of study and classroom instruction, and the many extracurricular activities. We hove been affected by the spirit of West and know that we have had some part in keeping it a strong influence in the school and the lives of the students. As we graduate, we seniors will not only look back at our three years at West, but also forward, for this marks not only an ending but the beginning of a new future. We will establish new goals and use our background at West to help us achieve our aims. Weil'i Senior Clot Officer at work—Mike Solhaug, Judy Brin, Bruce Homme, Chri Finrud. 34 Exchange Students Aid International Understanding Lynne Sparks, West's American Field Service senior abroad, spent six months in adventuresome Chile. Of the eight Westites sent abroad since 1958, Lynne was the second to participate in an actual school curriculum program and was one of the ten pioneers in Chile's program. Shivering through small earthquakes, evading school during school strikes, and jumping horses in horse shows made the trip exciting. By living in the small town, An-gol, and the capital city, Santiago, Lynne feels she had the opportunity to give an objective picture of the life and character of the people in the United States to her two Chilean families and to her newly made friends. By exposing the Chilean viewpoint at home, she hopes to help us understand the life and character of the Chileans. International understanding and fellowship with students of other countries have also been increased this year through various other exchange programs. The students of West have enjoyed getting to know Adrianna de Angelis from Italy, Juha Rantasila from Finland, and Dieter Ziegler from Austria. These exchange students, plus a number of regular enrollees from foreign countries have contributed to the enrichment of our school life. Lynne Spark bring Chilean spirit «o We t. The West High Football Team, under head coach Chuck Voss, finished eighth in the city with a 3-5 record. The Cowboys exhibited a great deal of potential power in their victories; and, except for a lack of experience, the record would have been much better. In the first game, the gridders overpowered South, gaining over 300 yards. West also routed North 35-12 and conquered Southwest 6-2. This game was highlighted by Denny Jensen's 80-yard touchdown run and some tough work by the Cowboy defense. In the season's final game, the Cowboys showed their great desire as they rallied to come within one point of second place Central. Mike Robinson was named the city's best punter and Dan Varichak the best plunging fullback. Gary Wenschlag and Captain Mike Solhaug were voted to the All-City Team; Gary as a second-string tackle and Mike as a first-string guard. Denny Jensen was honored by being voted West's Most Valuable Player. 70 2KF w Bottom Row: T. Nixon, M. Miller, B. Brothen, B. Farmer, D. Jensen, M. Robinson, D. Harris, G. Steinhilber. Second Row: J.
