miNhjeApous PUBLIC LIOttAttY Zhe Senior Class Presents THE 1961 HESPERIAN POUS MINNESOTA a. What will tomorrow bring — unbelievable conveniences in the home and the business world, accelerated travel on earth, or interstellar travel in space? Students at West High School are preparing for whatever the future may bring by the use of a constructive program of studies. The other parts of West’s well-rounded program, strong in athletic development and significant in its classroom and social associations, are also educational and preparatory. In its completion, this program will competently adapt the students to their place in tomorrow's world. The aim of the 1961 Hesperian is to present our key to the future — West High School. The club sponsors an auditorium which presents the interests of the foreign students; and, because money is needed for the partial support of a child abroad, the club shows an annual school movie. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society, under the direction of Miss Charlotte Westby, has been a very active group this year. They have sponsored several auditoriums of high quality. Varsity Football Under the leadership of a new coaching staff, headed by Chuck Voss, the West gridders were rated as the preseason favorite for the conference championship. But because of a slow start, the Cowboys had to settle for seventh place in the city standings, even after a midseason spurt of energy. Various difficulties occurred during the season including using the Calhoun Beach House for locker rooms. The boys enjoyed the ice cold showers. In addition, the injuries of three West starters caused some bad luck to the fighting team. Dan Stevens made the first touchdown of the season against South on Homecoming with a twenty-seven yard sprint. However, the Tigers proved to be too much for the Cowboys, coming back with a 20-7 victory. West showed clicking teamwork against Henry, the city champions. In the first quarter, Tim Nixon crashed through the line to make a touchdown. Arnie Svendsen made the kick. The Pats came back with two touchdowns and conversions. Rollie Lindstrom completed a pass to Co-Captains: Tim Nixon and Arnie Svendsen. 38 Row I; D. EMad, L. La More. L. Tatnor, G. Gilbertson. Row 2: T. Temp. D. Larson, D, Peitso, C. Byram, T. Mclnerney. West displayed a rugged defense in winning two of the three last games. Edison was the first to bow, 6-0. Roosevelt, taking advantage of all opportunities, slipped by the Cowboys 20-7. Displaying the strength which they should have had all year, the team squashed Marshall 21-7 in the last game of the season. Special awards were presented to Tim Nixon as the “Most Valuable Player,” and also as the “Hardest Running Back” in the city conference. Wishes for the best of luck go to the tri-captains for next year: Bob Day, Rollie Lindstrom and Dick Larson. Cross-Country CO CAPTAINS: Jim Arnold and Mike McGinnis Under the handicaps of bad weather, loss of locker rooms, and lack of returning harriers, new head coach, Dave Primrose, guided the cross country team to a strenuous, but losing season. The schedule for the year included dual and triangular meets over the 1.8 mile course at Nokomis, the Duluth Invitational Meet, and the city meet which concluded the season. In dual meets, the runners compiled a 1-9 record, the highlight of which was a victory over Washburn. A ninth place finish was achieved in the city meet as the team avenged earlier defeats. Individual standout was Jim Arnold who placed twenty-sixth out of over one hundred and thirty runners in the city meet, and led the squad in every race. Prospects for next year are brightened by the return of several top juniors and the promise of coach Primrose’s unique recruiting of basketball players. A SQUAD: J. Arnold. C. Prine. M. McGinnii. C. Rhamo. D. Menlo. M. Walih. Mr. Primrose. Basketball New head coach, Dave Primrose, worked the team many long hours, lining up several scrimmages and non-conference games in order to gain experience. Even though the team was without the use of their own gym for nearly half the season they still were a stubborn team to beat. West lost the season opener to Washburn by a narrow margin of seven points. Against Henry in the second game of the year, the Cowboys were up against Mel Northway who was second leading scorer in the city. The defense set up around him held him to his season low, which was an accomplishment. However, West still lost the game. A non-conference game brought back some of the lost morale when the Cowboys defeated Shakopec 56-51. When they returned to the city conference they continued winning when they held their poise in a one point thriller during the Marshall defeat 53-52. The victory over Marshall was West’s first and only conference win. During the regular season Gilbertson was the leading scorer. His high came in the Marshall game when he scored twenty-seven points. In the Sub-district, West drew Henry. The Cowboys battled fiercely all the way to the finish. They lost, but the season was closed with their best game. HEAD COACH: Mr. Primrose Row I: T. Nixon. J. They finished third in the city, the highest in many years. With a good nucleus of seniors returning in addition to several juniors and sophomores, the team began to play real hockey. The only early defeat was with the city champion, Roosevelt, 6-1. The 4-1 victory over South and the 4-2 victory over Henry highlighted the season. The biggest disappointments included the tie with North and the defeat by Washburn. The Cowboys earned an upper division berth in the District Tournament with a conference record of 7-2-1 and an overall record of 18-6-4. In the tournament West walloped Marshall 9-0. They lost a heartbreaker when they were defeated by South, 5-2. Wing, Bob Day, was the third highest scorer in the city and was chosen for the All-City first team. Swimming Through individual effort, hard practice, and team spirit. West’s small swimming team placed seventh in the city conference and seventh in the District 17 Meet. During the dual meets the team built up a 4-6 record defeating Vocational, Central, Marshall, and North; and losing to Washburn, Roosevelt, Southwest, and Edison. In addition, close meets were lost to South and Henry. Outstanding during the season of dual meets were undefeated diver, B. Williamson; butterflicr, J. Schnickel; and backstroker, D. LeMay. These boys also placed second, fifth, and third, respectively, in their events in the District Meet. Williamson was also eighth in the State Meet. In the District finals, West had a freestyle relay of G. Sundberg, G. Auger, J. Kottke, and M. McGinnis, and a medley relay of D. LeMay, W. Dirksmeyer, J. Schnickel, and K. Lindstrom. Coach R. X. It was the wrestling team which was lucky enough to have Ancil's support. Finishing up with a 4-5-1 record, the team did a fairly good job. Capt. Mike Voronyak was the best all around, going undefeated in city competition. Senior Palmer Peterson and Sophomore Bill Farmer gained entrance into the region but failed to advance any farther. Having only a few seniors on the team, Ancil and assistant coach Bob Bourg are looking forward to a very successful season next year. CAPTAIN: Mike Voronyak BASEBALL: Row I: M. Baldwin. E. Millor. M. But through their hard work, they finished with a strong season. Coach Don Houck's baseball team is made up mainly of sophomores and juniors; however, the few seniors on the team are some of the most capable players. A pre-season casualty found Roily Lind- strom breaking his leg. This left him unable to continue the season. Mr. Houck feels, however, that this team of his has sufficient potential to be a top contender. She set the 2 5-yard backstroke at 15.5 seconds and the 50-yard backstroke at 34.1 seconds. Finishing first in three races was captain Bev Braman. Bev and Holly joined Dana Bolstad and Judy Jensen to win the team relay. In the diving events, Judy Jensen earned second place and Vicki Oletski, third. With seven returning players, the tennis team had a good season. The most outstanding member, Sue Ramsey, has won many tournaments and is one of the region’s best players. In a match, the four girls played singles, and eight played doubles. The G.A.A. initiated an intramural tennis tournament. BASKETBALL Playing against the toughest competition in the Park Board League, the A.CC basketball team finished with only two wins. Georgie Hall was one of the best guards. Basketball, the most popular intramural sport, drew many teams. A double elimination tournament caused keen rivalry. A junior group triumphed over the seniors. Wisocki A Statement of the Class As we leave West for the last time it will be a sad experience indeed, for she has been good to us these last three years. Days have been rich in memories. From the age of Lowly Sophomorism to the wonderful times of Supreme Seniorship we built lasting friendships and acquired valuable stocks of knowledge. Through our teachers’ patient help and long hours of nightly study. West High has turned out a finished product of top quality high school graduates, the key to a growing free society. Senior Class President, 1961 Senior Advisors Miss Selma Blessin Mrs. Louise Bowers Miss Frances Ford Mr. Donald Houck Mr. Albert Nelson Mr. Arthur Norton Miss Charlotte Westby Mr. Hugo Wickstrom WEST’S REPRESENTATIVE Senior Craig Morton, this year’s West representative abroad, spent two exciting months in Pakistan. While there, he spent much of his time making speeches, attending parties, and traveling with his “family.” He also had the opportunity to visit East Pakistan. Craig agrees that it was a wonderful experience, and we greatly enjoyed hearing about his trip. West A.FS. Representative — Craig Morton Student Exchange Program Promotes Goodwill To promote better understanding between the United States and foreign countries, West participates in the American Field Service Program. Eddie Hckmat, our exchange student from Iran, will long be remembered for her delightful smile. Her gentle manner has won her the friendships of a great many students here at West. She has shown her enthusiasm by participating in numerous activities, both in and out of school. Kiki Dirksmeyer reminds us of his vigorous and industrial country, Germany. No matter what the occasion, he manages to have a good time. In his amiable way he has fit right into the school curriculum. Energetic and fun-loving, Kiki enjoyed our sports and outside activities. We hope they have enjoyed their stay at West as much as we have enjoyed having them. Along with new ideas and new viewpoints, Eddie and Kiki have brought their happy hearts and smiling faces. They have truly been successful ambassadors of good will. A.FS. A Hit, a Very Dramatic Hit” The seniors presented their class play, “Papa is All,” on December 8 and 9. The plot concerns a Pennsylvania Dutch mother, daughter, and son, who resist the isolation imposed on them by an unjust father. Adapting the Mennonite religion for his own end, Papa subdues the simple pleasures. Mama, however, docs not disapprove. Desiring to live their own lives, Jake and Emma arc kept in seclusion because their father considers them indispensable to the working of the farm. Student committees worked behind the scenes on such crews as business, costuming, make-up, technical, publicity, and properties. Their diligent work insured the quality of the play. The unusual production was coordinated by Mr. H. Robert Bailey. Ably assisting him was student director, Nancy Carter. It ca-aame upon a midnight clear ... The nights of April 13 and 14 found Mr. H. Robert Bailey and his “collaborating Genius, Julie Rosen, “frantically overseeing all. Flirtatious flapper, Gail Griffiths, was Mistress of Ceremonies. Ranging from old-fasioned harmony to modern jazz, were the musical selections. Dances covered the area between the Charleston and the modern dance. Adding more variety were several interpretive readings and a melodrama. Committees on publicity, business, costuming, and technical aspects cooperated to make the production a complete sucess. The Lady in Red % I I 83 T think they’ve met before Then Westward Ho... The regal King of Kowpokes “I didn't know the gun was loaded! 84 Kowpokes Kur-Up 1961, sponsored by rhe Student Council, proved to be a very entertaining evening. The Cowboys found the boys’ gym transformed into the atmosphere of a western corral. Around the perimeter of the room were concession booths set up by the various clubs. Hotdogs, pop, and cakes supplied refreshment; a ring-toss and basketball throw furnished exercise; while a fortune teller and the’sponge throw provided entertainment. Photogenic Cowboys enjoyed having their pictures taken with western scenery in a booth new to the Kut-Up. Kowpokes rollicked through square dances called by faithful Hank Williams. Not much co-ordination was involved but everyone had fun. Now and then members of the Kangaroo Kourt intervened to bring several Kowpokes under their judgment. The penalties were not severe but very amusing. The coronation highlighted the evening. Danny Harris, Bob Day, Walter Dirksmeyer, Tom Mclncrney. Chuck Prine, and Arnic Svcndsen made up the court. As Queen Julie crowned Tom, enthusiastic Kowpokes shouted their approval. What has captivated our Cowboys? . .. And they're genuine Norwegian knits. On With the Dance! “First you tell us who made it!” The Twin Sweater Dance, an annual production of the Social Clubs, provided an evening’s gala entertainment for many Westies. There was a variety of sweaters, with a predominance of Scandinavian and bulky styles. Several couples supplied the crowd with chuckles by wearing their somewhat dissimilar “twin sweaters.” To complete the evening’s fun, a glowing fire added just the right touch to the Glen-wood Chalet. Another of the Social Club’s turn-about dances, the Winter Formal, “Holly Daze,” highlighted Christmas vacation. The Minneapolis Golf Club was beautifully decorated with delicate ornaments. Music was furnished by a stylish band, the Rondells. All the debonair gentlemen and their charming dates agreed that it perfectly climaxed the holiday season. Concentration And so it was .. . ... all were in a “holly daze.” Teaching has its rewards. Who's the lucky girl? Without Labor Nothing Prospers Now is not the time for a siesta, boys! The growing strength of American education has become evident here at West. An apparent enthusiasm for learning could be seen in the student-faculty relationship. Each class possessed worthy values and was significant in itself. The presentation of organized material enabled the students to use their abstract understandings to the fullest degree. The production of numerous academic auditoriums, including such phases as the arts and sciences, in addition to the student body’s interest in such areas as world affairs, clearly showed that daily school life is the basis for substantial future life. All is quiet on the Western front. 'Turns the flight before deadline .. . Too many cooks spoil the broth. “Where’ll that extra finger go? “This is the only way to teach.” A toast to our mothers’ fine lunches. ‘Once upon a time there was a little Norseman 87 Hail! Hail! The gang's all here. Ah ah; watch those calories! ‘This is how it's done, girls' Varsity Hockey versus Sophomore Basketball .. But Men Cannot Labor On Always” To further character development, other functions were present in West curriculum. Classroom associations taught formal academic purposes, but also gave great personal satisfaction to the students. It was here that a strengthening of personalities was achieved. Also present were the “little things” that make school life fun. It was found that in learning together, the students and administration could share all their pleasures. These factors too, made up a strong foundation for preparation of a well-rounded life. The Jovial Juniors ♦ The Smart Set The day that the snow came down. Fashion Is Forever New Westites belonged to the “Smart Set” this year. Coiffures definitely followed the fashion. The bubble hair style and its counterparts became more bubbly by an operation entitled “ratting. New to the feminine fashion world w-ere the culottes, ranging in varying lengths and styles, which proved to be comfortable as well as practical. The girls also donned pleated bermuda skirts and knee-high stockings. For outdoor wear, several varieties in ski apparel were popular. Not to be outdone, the boys wore rich looking jackets and slacks in dark, muted plaids. In addition, suits were often accompanied by vests of contrasting colors and patterns. The gant shirt, a modification of the ivy-league style, was still another important fashion for both the girls and the boys. West’s stylish students were in the fashion mode for 1961. ’61 Seniors as Seafaring Sophs At ye olde Royal Ball . . . Remembered Joys Are Never Passed 1959 • . .
