HESPERIAN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNE FOREWORD Have you ever tried, in the midst of an enjoyable experience, to analyze your pleasure, to comprehend your delight? An almost impossible task. How much more difficult, then, to attempt this same sort of analysis, to try to recall happy times, after a lapse of years; rliis is where MEMORIES come in — intangible, elusive, mere reflections of the past. Thus it is that we present the 1956 Hesperian as a MIRROR of high school days. Here then is West High School, 1956 —Through the Looking Glass FACULTY A Guiding Beacon — Straight and True Page 4 . SENIOR CLASS OF 1956 The Senior class made up for its slow start in organizing by accomplishing a great deal. John Hannon was elected president, and Pam Anderson, Tom Tennant, and Sue Coykendall were vice president, treasurer, and secretary, respectively. Senior advisor, Mr. Casserly, was convinced that Seniors are inherently lazy — until he saw the spectacular results of the card-selling campaign. This turned out to be one of the really big money-raising projects of the year. The play which was chosen by the class for presentation was Samuel Taylor's Sabrina Fair.” Its two day run was one of the memorable experiences of the year. The entire cast, the director, Miss McLaughlin, and all of the various committees involved, worked hard and long to make the production a success. Suddenly, the class was caught up in a whirl of activity, which quickly led to that momentous day when the proud graduates received their diplomas. There were four valedictorians and one saluta-torian that year. Valedictorians were Craig Deutsche, Barbara Doran, Donald Masler, and Pete Townley. Elayne Rundberg was salutatorian. Although in terms of wins and loses the 1955 season was not a successful one, the team never quit and we continued to back them up. It was an inexperienced squad at the beginning of the year, and it was Eric Lindberg's first year as head coach. Never-FOOTBALL theless, the team improved and in the last game against Southwest, Bob Miller scored our first touchdown on a drive through the line. The other outstanding game was West tying Vocational 0 to 0 at the beginning of the year. Of course it was impossible to catch each fleeting moment; many of the most valuable scenes are lost forever — except in memories. However, we hope that the varied scenes YOUR HESPERIAN depicted will help in some manner to recapture the joy of your years at West High School. The task of preparing this annual would not have succeeded as well without the guidance of Mr. Stoy-len, who has served as adviser for the past five years and who has done a great deal to help with this book. An American public high school is never a separate entity; it is firmly interwoven in the organic fabric of community life. We should like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our community, which has consistently offered service and helpful advice for furtherance of both the goals of education and of healthy community spirit. Our sincere thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Westerlund, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Kringen, Harry M. Carroll, and Mr. and Mrs. Townley, who were sponsors this year. In addition, we owe a debt of gratitude to Lund-gren Studios, who have done the photography work; to Mr. A. Segal and Mr. Alan Ominsky of the Bureau of Engraving; and to Bill Rowntree and Ed Young who have taken many of the pictures. Page 71 Page 72 And so we leave with memories that cannot die. ♦
