Shirley's service is measured by completed deeds. Constantly and quietly working to improve the school, she endeared herself to all with whom she came in contact. REX MORGAN Head Boy, First Semester Equally well known on the football field and in school, is athlete Rex Morgan, an outstanding Westerner for three years. Greatly appreciated, too, by the school, is his recordg for many of West's activities have grown through his tireless boosting. -.-..........,-...................,,....-..v..-..-....-W..,,Y ,. . enior Cfafm Far different from the timid band of freshmen who four years ago marched through Westls portals for the first time, are the more than four hundred graduating seniors who this year bid goodbye to the Ranch of Friendlinessn. Scholastic success was reached by some, partly attained by others. Leaders were quick' ly singled out by vote and popular acclaim. But whether or not fame came to every mem' ber of the class of '40, some measure of the true friendliness and genuine democracy of the Cowboy school was instilled in each one. With the new life at West, changes were many and varied for 40'ers: noon dancing, longer lunch hours, greater schoolroom freedom came to West. These entailed increased responsibility but provided farfreaching opportunity to students abiding by its demands. The road to success is a rocky one. No exception is the path to high school democf racy, which is alternately paved with praise and criticism. Through -its entire journey, '40 did its share to make West a finer school. Having reached this destination, the class looks back with few regrets and much satisfaction at its lasting achievements.

Assuming second semester duties as Head Girl, Virginia rose fast in the school's favor. Leadership, combined with a pleasing personality, formed the basis of Bitsy's popularity. JOHN F URN EAU Head Boy, Second Semester Capable is wellfliked john Furneau, Cowboy Head Boy for the second halffyear. Modesty and a dynamic personality combined to make john one of the most popular and wellfknown students in West. Although high in scholastic standing and other enviable records, he wholefheartedly particif pated in a great many activities.
