CHARLES OLSEN Left End It was one of the West opened their season by defeating North 34-18. most spectacular football games seen in the Denver High School League. The score was 20-O before the first quarter ended. In the second quarter, North scored two touchdowns. North again took the ball in the second half and made another touchdown. In the last quarter, Mcllvain intercepted a pass and ran for a touchdown. Buechner was caught behind his own goal line to bring the score to 34 for West. 110

FOOTBALL SEASON The 1934 Orange and Black Football Team was one of the most success- ful in the history of Vfest High, the season ending with the West Cowboys sharing the Championship with the South Rebels , Living up to pre-season expectations, West opened their season by defeat- ing North 34-18. In their second game the Cowboys beat their ancient rivals from East 12-0. West won their third game, defeating South 7-6. It was one of the most thrilling games of the season. West conquered Manual in another hair-raising game. The accurate place-kicking of Will Rogers, All- State guard, gave West its sezond one-point victory. At the beginning of the second round, the Cowboys defeated North 12-6. An overconfident West eleven aided a weak but lighting Angel eleven, to hold West to a scoreless tie 0-0. West and South battled to a scoreless tie in the second meeting of the league leaders. The game was featured by the superb kicking of Jack Waltman, Cowboy halfback. In the final game, Manual handed West its first defeat of the season 7-6. West pla:ed five men on the all-city team: Norman Compton, end: Harry Blackmore, guard: Bernard Boysen, center: Will Rogers, guard: Morris Worl, quarterback. This f' group did much to keep the West spirit alive in the student body. They added pep to every student rally. They w e r e especially prominent at all football games and under their leadership the Cowboy cheering section was one of the largest and most en- thusiastic groups to repre- sent a Denver school. East fought stubbornly but were unable to stop the Cowboys. The Westerners lost a chance to score in the first period when Waltman fumbled in the end zone. East's only threat came in the third quarter when the Angels passed to the West one-yard line. On the next play Bohman's fumble was recovered by Blackmore inches from the goal line. West scored twice in the final period. The first touchdown came from a plunge by Waltman. The second came from a pass to Lafe Mc- Clard.
