FOOTBALL The 1974 West Essex football team, a veteran dominated squad, became the first football team in the school’s history to win a state championship. The Knights were awarded the North Jersey Section 2, Group 3. state championship, finishing a tough schedule with a 7-2 record. The Knights tied for second place in the Jersey Hills Conference behind powerful Morristown. Steve DiGeronimo. and Dave Montgomery. Keil made strides in reviving traditionally outstanding football teams at West Essex. Tri-captains were Eric Pierce, Bob Losasso, and Steve Fobcr. Losasso was a fine leader at quarterback, and Pierce established himself as one of the finest running backs in the school's history, rushing for over 1000 yards in his senior season. Tober was a steady performer at center and outside linebacker. Two-way senior players included Phil Seligman. a safety and slot-back; Brian Nelson, a defensive halfback and slot-back; and Barry Kann, a guard and defensive end. Other senior standouts included offensive ends Lance Sisco, Bruce Schilling and Tom Lorenzo, along with interior lineman Mike Terranella and Steve Lambusta. The defense was led by lineman Mark DeTroia, Glenn Barney, Mike Russomano. Mark Quadrel, and Tom Danckwerth. Danckwerth was valuable as a place kicker and punter. The 1974 season brought rewarding accomplishments in West Essex football. With loyal student and faculty support behind them, the Knights worked hard and attained a state title. Under the direction of assistant varsity coaches Dave Montgomery and Steve DiGeronimo, the junior varsity Knights won five of eight games with one tie. The squad consisted of 17 juniors, all of whom contributed to a winning season. Quarterback Mark Lore led a backfield including John Tretter and Chet Stefanelli at the slot positions, and Steve Sargese at fullback. The offensive line was led by guards Mike Bahto and Jack Penndorf. center Sloan Friedman, and split-ends Don Schmidt and John Mastriani. The defense was stubborn in traditional Wessex fashion. Defensive tackle Mike Contaldi was supported by a crew of linebackers, including Jack Gambino, Scot Lord, and Rich Celusek. Defensive ends Tim Caso and Paul Fardelman fronted a defensive backfield that included Jim Hunt and Lou DeLitizia. The Freshman team ended its season with a impressive 5-2-1 record, and tied Morristown for the Jersey Hills Conference Champsionship. The team was well balanced with ten different boys involved in the scoring. The offense scored a total of 132 points while the defense gave up only 42. Head Coach Fred Keil, William Roca. John Dull.
