A day to show friends and family how much you care. Well, this year, to West Carrollton High School students and faculty members, Valentine's Day meant all of these things plus something more. On February 4, 1984, at 8 p.m., the high school cafeteria came to life with music and dance as the NHS Senior Council sponsored Valentine’s Dance began. This dance, unlike Homecoming or Prom, was more casual and added a new kind of twist. Being a turnabout, it became the perfect chance for every girl to ask the man of her dreams” out to dinner and then on to the dance and most of the girls jumped at this chance. Although getting close” was one of the main ideas behind the dance, music for fast dancing was the more popular choice. To the students, this meant a different route to class, and to some, an excuse for tardiness. To the clean-up crew, this meant not only hard work, but extra hours. Eventually, after many hours of pounding on the roof, the holes were fixed and WC did not have to worry about kicking the bucket anymore. Although the 1983-84 girls' tennis team did not win many points, the girls learned a great deal. The Lady Pirates finished the season with a league record of 0-14, and an overall record of 0-17. Voted Most Valuable was Diane May, a sophomore. This year's Most Improved Player was Gina Bailey. The team was young, and did not possess any seniors. Most of the girls were rookies at the sport, with only a few returning from the year before. With all of the girls returning next year, the Lady Pirates are looking forward to a better season. Girls' Tennis 37 Just 'Putt’ering Around This year’s golf team was larger than past teams with fifteen members. Even with this increase, the entire team was made up of underclassmen. With the lack of experience and 3-15 season record, a few bright spots did, at least, occur. One of the better moments was nearly upsetting Lebanon at home. The most outstanding individual on the team was Tony Denny who tied for gold medalist at sectionals and received All-League Honorable Mention. Even though the team had a poor record. Coach Ferriell felt they did very well at sectionals. They attended camp at Ohio State University in June. At camp, the squads went through evalutions every night. On the final day, the varsity and reserve squads received a superior rating that qualified them for national competition. Both squads were continually spirited throughout the week, and the varsity took the honor of having the most spirit- ed squad. These girls kicked off the fall season by hosting the third annual Community Pep Rally. This pep rally gets the whole city, including students, parents, and fans involved in an evening of great enthusiasm. This unending spirit carried well into the school year, with the girls supporting soccer, football, and wrestling championships. Numerous pep assemblies went over well with the student body building up during the year, and even the sophomores got into the swing of things by winning the spirit sword two consecutive times this year. Hopefully, this spirit will stay with the Pirates long after these girls are gone. The advisors for the year were Nancy Christiansen, Football Wres-tling; Connie Henry. Soccer Basketball. Cheerleading 17 The West Carrollton High School Band is often referred to as One Big Family . The members have stuck together from the hot days of band camp to the cold early morning practices and final football games. From the initiation of the Rookies” at band camp and the warm welcome they received afterward, to Senior Night and the sad good-byes of the seniors, they act as one group. During this year, the marching band won many awards, including a first place at the Fairborn Invitational and a superior rating at the Day-ton Convention Center. Also this year. the symphonic band was split into two separate bands, the Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band. Both bands gave good performances at the district contest and received excellent ratings. The highlight of the year was the band’s trip to Six Flags Over Mid America in St. Louis.
