Balloons tied to the spokes of my bike. Having tWo bookbags instead of one. What's really weird is I can remember it all so plainly. Like it was just a couple years ago. Is it possible for me to be here already? 6 before they are boo for great race It's funn I never pic So complit Trying to cran day. Doing Usuall Sweai reports, Waiting in tl Then engagi chair. Painting signsltr epassembiv M Knowing half |K the kids will go home| Bribing a teacher into buying my last box of Yummy, deee-licious Junior Class candy, Casting my vote for Mr. Sexy Legs, Doing homework, oh crud, homework, Figuring footnotes so the bottom margin, fs one inch, no more, no less. 7 Trying out in English class for the lead in Beowulf, Going outside for gym in 45° weather. Staying in when it's 80°, Folding a maxi in half for a mini locker, Trymg to be the last person to leave the lounge. Racing after school to check out a Biology text. Leaving the language lab with my mouth ail puckered and stuck. Searching for a friend during an assembly, Re-enacting the diffusion of molecules in Drama, So much to do in so little time. 10 Of all the things that go on in one day. It would be tough to figure out what I enjoy the most. I know it wouldn't be first period, It's usually pretty hard to get with it at 7:55 a.m„ But I do like second period—I can begin to make out faces, And communicate with the world a little. I guess there are good and bad things about each class. That's what life is supposed to be all about. I have to take the good along with the bad, And if I seem to be finding too many bad things, Then maybe I better try to do something about it. n So Much to Do in so Little Time 13 Why is it I'll stay after school two hours To decorate for a dance, Yet forget to do 15 measly terms in Soc.? I spent a whole day looking for something New to wear to school the first day, so I wore my new clothes and forgot paper. I'm beginning to see how much time I've wasted, I guess the teachers have seen it all along, It makes me feel like a real idiot. I realize now that I've got to decide What is going to benefit me the most. I want to be somebody, I want to feel my life wasn't a big waste. I really care, but I can look around and See people that don't, as if school were Nothing but a big joke. I wonder if that is how they feel about Life? I hope not, I don't want to live in A world where no one cares about anything. That isn't living. 17 Ten, eleven, twelve years of school is, well, it's a lot of school. I wonder where I'll be and what I'll be doing one year from now. Or more frightening, in 10 years? That seems so far away but I guess it's not as distant as it seems. School's gone fast, it won't be long before I graduate, then what? I'll be 21, old enough to vote. Mature enough to get married. And make a living for myself. I want to go places and see things too, Find out where I belong. So much to do in so little time. 20 So much to do in so little time. 23 FACES OF FOOTBALL 24 ' r 9ACKFIELD I N MOTION 26 Top left: The coaches concentrate on team action. ONE Chamber Music Directed by: Stephe Hall The scene opened in the woman's floor of the Insane Asylum. Each woman thinking herself to be another, escaping reality, and living in a world of their own. Together they planned a murder of one of the men inmates, instead they killed one of their own kind. The overseer entered the room, saw the dead woman sitting upright in a chair and said only, Ah, sleeping again? Lottery Directed by: Miss Brush Friday the 13th. A day of evil when everyone in the town gathered to hear the decision of fate. The decision of who was to be the one who would ACTS be the sacrifice. Each family drew a; tag. Only one was the symbol of death—the blank one. Then among the one family, each member had to go through the ordeal again. Finally one member received the symbol of evil. The inevitable ending was waiting for that person who possessed the one blank tag— DEATH caused by the bruises of stones. The Sandbox Directed by: Teresa Clarke An old couple looked at their aged mother knowing that her death was sure to come soon. To let her enjoy her final hours of life they took her to the sandbox in the park. There she sat holding the grains of sand between her fingers. The angel of death watched over her and when she died in the sandbox the angel carried her away to her eternal rest. Each class had two boys and two girls as representatives. They had a convention and Kathy Jump was sent to the National Convention. Food Council meets once a month during school. Student Council provided a great service to the school this year. They collected for the Diane Powers Trust Fund and also had a sponge-throw at lunch time to contribute to this fund. Student Council also collected for the March of Dimes, observed Miamis-burg and other schools, and worked to promote sportsmanship for the sportsmanship trophy. Dean's Council made up of four girls from each class, served as an advisory board for Mrs. Wentzel, their advisor. They met monthly and discussed girls' problems on an individual basis. These girls were selected on their leadership in groups around the school. iso cil, Dean's Council and Food Council dent Government at W. C. AFS JCOWA and Campus Life Are Concerned in the World Around Them The Junior Council on World Affairs, interested in national and international concerns, found the year to be one of great interest. J.C.O.W.A. participated in an International Quiz and a mock U.N. General Assembly. Also, a big highlight of the year was a Foreign Bazaar, participated in by 20 schools in the Dayton area. Our W.C. J.C.O.W.A. sponsored this event. Campus Life Club, a group of Christian young people, started off the year by participating in the city-wide Scream In The Dark. At Halloween time, an old warehouse was the scene for the Campus Life spook house. The entrance fee was one bag of candy, which was later given to underprivileged orphans. IS2 A.F.S., continuing in its efforts to make the world a little smaller, again sponsored two foreign exchange students to West Carrollton. Anita Grilli lived with the Hamiltons for her year here. She is a native of Chile. Anita quickly learned new words and expressions in order to easily understand the .students of W.C. Sarote Vrabornvorawut (Sam), of Thailand, made his home with Reverend and Mrs. Donnell and their children. Sam, who plays the flute, was active in band. He traveled with the band for their performances. VICA, DECA, COE Practice for the Future 154 The V.I.C.A. sponsored Auto Shop was again victorious at the Dayton Custom Car Show. They brought home a first place trophy in the high school division for their dune buggy. The Auto Shop, in addition to assisting Mr. Fengler, was given a chance to display their dune buggy at Harlan Fengler's Cars of Fame Show. In order to finance a trip to the National Drag Races, the Auto Shop also gave a car wash. O.W.E., one of W.C.'s cooperative programs, concentrated on the coordination of attending school and working. At the end of the year, O.W.E. held an Employer Employee Banquet at the Holiday Inn South. D.E.C.A., another of West Carrollton's work programs, was very active this year. In addition to running the bookstore, members had a calendar sale at Christmas sponsored a Pop Festival (the Black Forest Festival), featuring such groups as Eli Radish , Cross , and Balderdash . D.E.C.A. also had a banquet at the Carillon Cafeteria. C.O.E., West Carrollton's Cooperative Office Education organization, distinguished itself this year by having Paul Knight elected the Regional President and Janet Stansell the Vice President of Region Four. C.O.E. also donated $400 to the Ruth Lyons Christmas Fund on the Bob Braun 50 50 Club. Skills Provide Fun and Enjoyment Sports oriented clubs proved to attract a large range of students with varied interests. The Ski Club enjoyed the slopes of Sugarcreek Ski Hills in Bellbrook. Classes were held for beginners on the small hill, while more daring and advanced students tried their luck on the big hill. Sky diving was shown to more than exciting as students got their first chance to parachute from a plane. Before the actual jumping, the members learned the handling of equipment and techniques of landing. The Chess Club met, giving interested students a chance to demonstrate their skills at maneuvering and foresight. Students were encouraged in the development of artistic talents in Art Club. Besides winning second place for their Homecoming float. Art Club also participated in an Art Show given by our own club. 157 Invaluable People of West Carrollton 158 The Library staff proved to be of invaluable assistance to the librarians, Mrs. Badertsher, and Mrs. Harris, and the students. These assistants used study halls to increase the efficiency of the library and keep the shelves stocked. F.T.A. started off the year by receiving a charter to the National Future Teachers' Organization for the first time in W.C. history. These students met throughout the year hearing speakers and seeing movies related to the teaching profession. Mr. Klein-schmidt, one of the guest speakers, spoke on the advantages of going into Special Education. Throughout the year students had a chance to substitute in area elementary schools. National Honor Society, in lowering the grade average for eligibility from 3.2 to 3.0, put an emphasis not only on scholastic abilities, but on character and leadership qualities. The teachers determined the students who displayed these characteristics. Biology Honor Society is a National as well as a West Carrollton organization. This group is made up of students with a high number of Biology points. Honor Biology students are eligible. 159 Hola! Bonjour! Guten Tag! Helping to break down the communications barrier between nations was the main goal of the Spanish, French, and German Clubs. These three groups concentrated on foreign culture, also. Linguistic skills were probed as the students combined fun with learning. Miss Wills, Mrs. Martin, and Mr. Poland served as advisors to these three international organizations. ENTHUSIASM The former Beta Club gained a new dimension this year. It became a member of Leo Clubs of America, sponsored by the Lion's Club, and therefore became Beta-Leo Club. During the year, Leo was beneficial to the school and the surrounding community. They collected money for the Diana Powers Trust Fund, sponsored the school Christmas Assembly, and passed out flyers on the Bond Issue. Varsity Club, made up of the letter-men for all the school sports, rose early on Saturday mornings after football games, and cleaned up the stadium, providing a service to the school. s I GIRLS! 162 GIRLS! GIRLS! The Sophomore, junior, and Senior Y-Teens in an effort to be of help to the community and the school, took on several projects during the year. The combined efforts of the three groups helped to make the annual potato chip sale a success. Senior Y-Teens decorated a car for the Homecoming Parade, sponsored the school Easter Assembly, and also gave an Easter Egg Hunt, complete with Peter Rabbit, for a nursery school. junior Y-Teens, getting into the Christmas spirit, gave a Christmas party for a nursery school. They also visited Dayton State Hospital. Sophomore Y-Teens had a bake sale. G.A.A., combining fun with fitness, stressed physical involvement. Participating in a city wide play day helped to improve their physical skills. C.A.A. also sponsored the Turnabout Tag Dance entitled, Sugar and Spice. At the end of the year, the girls held a Mother-Daughter Dinner. Journalists or Memory Makers? Piratan, continuing their efforts to provide students with a better link with the past, used more special effects, color, and a bigger book to help accomplish this. Co-editors, Pam Hoke and Leslie Garland, provided guidance in the channeling of students' ideas. Leslie, won third place in Theme Development at a journalism conference sponsored by the MVHJA. 164 The LOG, striving to obtain a more prominent place in W.C. this year, overtook some major changes. They became a member of the Miami Valley High School Journalism Association. Also, one of the big changes this year was the name of the paper. This transition not only included changing the name from PIRATE'S LOG to THE LOG, but a complete renovation of style. Four students from the staff, Ron Redder, Connie Sherrard, Carol Snoots, and Liz Taylor, visited Fremont High School near Toledo. They spent the day discussing the problems of the passage of Fremont's Bond Issue. Upon returning, the four students wrote a story which made up the front page of an issue of THE LOG, and also made into flyers in an effort to get parents and other voters to realize the seriousness of the passage of West Carrollton's Bond Issue. THE LOG was recognized by the Dayton Dairy Council for its sustained efforts in promoting good nutrition. Doubletotherear withaslighthesitationbythe yry a rightandleftandleftandleft t CT X ¥ A new event was added this year as the Concert Band accompanied the Carrolltone's during the half time of a Day-ton Gems hockey game at Hara Arena. On February 8 the winter concert was performed and on February 21st several students performed solos and in ensembles earning a number of excellent and superior ratings. The year was complete with the band's performance in the annual Spring Concert. Above the cheers of the crowd and the pounding basketball, the pep band makes its presence known! The band arouses spirit among the fans as they play the school song and accompany the Carrolltones with popular hits. Included in its busy schedule, Pep band performs at our pep assemblies. They have also put in a special appearance at the Day-ton Mall Cinema when they played for the special opening of Hello Dolly. 169 Johnny Big smiles, stomping boots, high knees, pounding hearts. These are the important parts of the proud feeling displayed by the 1969-70 Carrolltones. Their regular activities this year included marching with the band at all football games and performing at pep assemblies and basketball games. The Carrolltones were awarded first place as the best drill team in the Firemen's Convention at Eaton, Ohio, and they came away with third place honors and best uniformed drill team at the 2nd annual Greater Dayton Drill Team Competition at Centerville.
