I 1 X4 ., Q a Xalan Here is your yearbook. Long hours have been spent trying to make it a memorial that you will treasure all your life. We have been working on the 1959 PIRATAN with the idea that we were going to make this annual the best ever. Now, a word of wisdom acquired after many hours of dedicated toil-the best doesn't come easily. This statement, we believe, will bring understanding from preceding staffs and an attentive ear from next year's crew. In the first section of this PIRATAN we have tried to picture the many ways in which We utilize our time at school. Certainly, a great deal of our time is very wisely occupied by studying and learning-two very important factors. At West Carrollton High School we also have time for expanding our personalities in other ways-time for developing leadership, time for acquiring social graces, time for devotion, time for play and physical activity, and time for making friends. With this idea in mind, We have chosen TIME as the theme of this book, and we are using the face of a clock as the symbol of this theme. The co-operation given by the faculty and student body to the production of this book is very much appreciated. We extend our thanks to all of them. We hope you will enjoy the PIRATAN as much as we have enjoyed publishing it. It has been ours for almost a year. Now it belongs to you. Although We have spent many days planning pictures and com- posing copy, We have also had our fun. Our get-to- gethersn were worth all the days of soliciting ads and of trying to solve problems such as how to take football pictures in the rain. In reflecting upon the past year, we realize that we have acquired a better perspective of our school, our friends, and ourselves. We feel that we have gained by our association with the staff, and we sincerely hope that the result of that association is the best yearbook West Carrollton High has ever had. J 1 x iii? The first event after summer camp was the annual Montgomery County Fair. During the next three months, the band presented out- standing performances of precision drill shows between halves of the football games. With the marching season in full swing, the organization journeyed to Greenville, Ohio, to take part in the Sesquicentennial Pageant. Competing with twenty-two bands, they were awarded honors of second place in the marching and playing event. In October, the unit traveled to Oxford, Ohio, to attend the Miami University. Schenck to march in the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D. C., the high school marching band began earning the fseven thousand dollarsit necessary to make the trip. They diligently went all out selling candy, giving concerts, and taking orders for band calendars. The band boosters backed the band by providing dues and operating a concession stand at football games. Although they had to march fourteen city blocks, all the enjoyment they had repaid them time and time again. Sponsored tours enabled them to View all the highlights of the Capital City. The band's first concert was given at a regular meeting of the Band Boosters. This was followed on December 24 by the first Christmas concert for the public. Also in December, the Band Boosters presented a dinner dance for the band. After vacation, the group started to prepare new music for its annual Winter Concert. Concert assemblies were presented for the High School, Junior High, Walter Shade, C. F. Holliday, and Frank Nicholas Elementary Schools. Small ensembles presented various programs for church and civic affairs in the sur- rounding community. During February, March, and April district and state nusic contests sponsored by the O.M.F..A. were attended by many of the instrumental students. After spring vacation, the Princeton Invitational Band Festival took musicians to Cincinnati, Ohio, to play under the direction of Mr. Harold Walters, nationally known composer and conductor. Back home again, it was time to prepare for the big annual Spring Music Festival. As spring weather ap- proached, rehearsals not only for the concert band, but also marching band in preparation for again being par- ticipants in the Miami Valley Band Festival comprised of twelve bands with Brookville acting as the host. Due to its unusual growth in such a short time, it has been impossible to uniform the entire band. Along with the tremendous interest, increase in size and playing quality of the band have come additional perform- ances. Beginning With the Parade at the Country Fair during the summer, they presented concerts for the West Carrollton Band Boosters meetings, meeting of the combined P.T.A.'s of West Carrollton Public Schools, and assemblies for each of the three elementary schools. The organization also per- formed at the Winter Concert with the Concert Band and participated in the Spring Music Festival. Ensembles from the band played for the Walter Shade P.T.A. Over fifty students entered the Ohio Music Education Junior High Solo-Ensemble Contest in February. Results were not known at the time of publication. However, in last yearis event West Carrollton Schools ranked second out of over forty schools participation in the number of events entered. Future Teachers Club opens door to u profession With this year marking the final one for the last of the charter members in F.T.A., the club got off to a good start. The Walter E. Shade Future Teachers of America inducted twenty-four new members into the club in September. The second semester brought more new members. Through classroom observation, substituting, and the programs of the F.T.A., students exploring the possibility of teaching were able to decide whether the teaching pro- fession would be their profession. Future teachers toured the new campus-style Fairmont High School and were able to gain program ideas during the workshops. One of the neighboring F.T.A. clubs was invited to a dinner-entertainment meeting enabling the clubs to get acquainted and at the same time to have an enjoyable evening. Again this year the Parent Teachers Association spon- sored a two-year S400 dollar scholarship which was given to one of the senior members who had definitely decided to enter the college of education. The cry of play ball was first heard on April 8 when the Pirates played against West Milton. The season was off to a good start. These senior boys prove that uyou never outgrow your need for mllk ,. flint E '? NlK2'7if E IOR MEMORIE We, the Seniors of 1959, while recalling the experiences of our school days, realize that they are to be relived again only in our hearts and minds. Loosening the apron strings, we entered the first grade and began our long journey, as it seemed then, but which has come to an end all too soon. Learning early the thrill of getting that special A, each year brought a greater and more thrilling challenge . . . Widening our small worlds, we included the joys and troubles of our closest friends. The Ohio sesquicentennial provided the theme for our sixth grade commencement which marked the end of our elementary years. Happy go lucky, we became party-goers and the opposite sex came into the picture. But we took time out to consider seriously our course of study for our high school years. We said good-bye to our care-free years and accepted the responsibilities of high school. ' As freshmen, feeling rather inferior, we were able to join a few of the clubs and to come to the high school dances from which we had been excluded for so long. We prepared for our junior and senior expenses by selling concessions at one of the basketball games and Christmas cards. Upon entering our sophomore year, we assumed the responsibility of taking active leadership in clubs and other organizations around school. Sportswise, many of our young rnen became promising athletic material. Our junior year got off to a flying start with the selection of class rings. After the first home football game, we sponsored a successful dance. Junior Career Day supplied valuable information concerning our future occupations. Nervously, a green cast presented the junior class play, Foot-Loose. The junior-senior reception, on the evening of May 16, was an evening of hilarity as the senior prophecy was read and one of sadness as Graduation Day was sung. Of course we had our fun, but the long hours of study were also rewarded by scholastic honors. The junior class was well represented on the Saturday morning in spring, when the scholarship team went to Miami University. Time revealed us, the class of '59, as seniors wondering whether we were actually ready to face the realities of the future. Staging the class play, Desperate Ambrose, planning the senior prom, participat- ing in senior career day, receiving our senior pictures, selecting our graduation announcements, and ex- pressing thanks to teachers who steered us through our years, we realized we were rapidly closing the door on the most important year of high school. As the last moment of the junior-senior reception drew near, each one realized the significance of that moment of reunion and joy. Graduation . . . the night which is most anticipated, which is heavenly in actuality, which is never quite forgotten. The friends, the laughter, the tears, and the joys all combine to end an outstanding four years. we 'zs.Mwg5,4f ,- f N ha 1 Bi W ' wx ...W-ag 1,,, 5,50 f , , : .:::f,:E1 . i.,1i?m51B, .im kg we W, A 11 My Lyxgxmm ' '1'Q'4QfT5'x5'Ei:zSl'5?,12?H ' 'kf f'?1m A fafsirlffff 35222532 I 7552351153255 in pg.,wggfgxwmxfgwvfgwwf' ,ww 'W ,A , iziw, - ' 5L7.gfZ A - .::.z2v1g,v1 gf i5v::x-.- wwf: ,fn f . .N ,-L, lglify . With her background as an English teacher, she was able to make excellent book selections for our limited library. Her library assistants as well as the students and faculty agree that her congenial person- ality and her willingness to give advice, whether it be for the selection of a book for pleasure or one for reference, were qualities to be admired by all who knew her. f TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The WorId's Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made E' X m l V5 W 5 I 1 .
