Our theme is the sea and the men who sail her. From the beginning of time the sea has been symbolic of permanence, dignity and power. The sea is the mother of life, and long before the tiniest, crudest plant grew upon land, there was life in its waters. Though we are an inland people, we depend upon the sea for life. Not only animal and vegetable life, but human life would perish off the face of the planet without the oceans. It is the rays of the sun acting upon the surface of the great oceans that form clouds, and it is the clouds that water the earth, even those parts farthest from the sea. Since all life depends upon moisture, so, in the end, it depends upon the oceans. The sea contributes fish for the nourishment of mankind. For centuries it has carried the ships of men through sparkling, crystal waters and through writhing, turbulent storms ro foreign ports, — ships laden with lifegiving necessities and luxurious treasures, breaking down the barriers of prejudice and hate between nations with tidings of love and goodwill. Thus, we chose for our theme, the sea, and they who go down to the sea in ships'.

Dedication With deep appreciation, the 1951 Firatan is respectfully dedicated to teachers everywhere, past and present. These men and women of yesterday and today have performed many services beyond the call of regular duty. They have been more than mere teachers. They have been true friends ready to help and guide mankind at all times. The teachers of the world have aroused the souls of students through the ages to those noble principles and high ideals that radiate culture and express refinement. We pay tribute to the teachers of the world, — the lighthouses of education and progress.
