Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1951 volume:

was published for the Student Body of the WEST CARROLLTON SCHOOLS by the Yearbook Staff under the direction of Barbara Stout, Editor-in-Chief, the Business Management was by Dolores Hicks, and Mary Youngberg was Faculty Adviser. Our theme is the sea and the men who sail her. From the beginning of time the sea has been symbolic of permanence, dignity and power. The sea is the mother of life, and long before the tiniest, crudest plant grew upon land, there was life in its waters. Though we are an inland people, we depend upon the sea for life. Not only animal and vegetable life, but human life would perish off the face of the planet without the oceans. It is the rays of the sun acting upon the surface of the great oceans that form clouds, and it is the clouds that water the earth, even those parts farthest from the sea. Since all life depends upon moisture, so, in the end, it depends upon the oceans. The sea contributes fish for the nourishment of mankind. For centuries it has carried the ships of men through sparkling, crystal waters and through writhing, turbulent storms ro foreign ports, — ships laden with lifegiving necessities and luxurious treasures, breaking down the barriers of prejudice and hate between nations with tidings of love and goodwill. Thus, we chose for our theme, the sea, and they who go down to the sea in ships'. Dedication With deep appreciation, the 1951 Firatan is respectfully dedicated to teachers everywhere, past and present. These men and women of yesterday and today have performed many services beyond the call of regular duty. They have been more than mere teachers. They have been true friends ready to help and guide mankind at all times. The teachers of the world have aroused the souls of students through the ages to those noble principles and high ideals that radiate culture and express refinement. We pay tribute to the teachers of the world, — the lighthouses of education and progress. It is twelve years that have passed since the crew of the ' U.S.S. W. C. H. S. came aboard, — years spent in constant sailing to the ports of education. Your superior officers have endeavored to chart a safe and sure voyage for you through calm blue waters of peace and democracy, — away from the rough seas and dangerous shoals of communism and petty hatreds that cause wars. Your task is not complete. You are now bound on your voyage through life. Your graduation will begin the metamorphosis that will often change the sunny haze of a morning sunrise to dark and formidable clouds. From here on you must make your own decisions in a struggling world melted together by atomic force. You must be captain of your own ship. Man her and make her secure! Steer your course with indominatable spirit and courage till you have logged through the gray chill of troubled waters to a harbor of civic and spiritual accomplishment, thereby bringing treasures of peace, goodwill and happiness to yourselves and to your comrades all over the world. Bon Voyage, Sailors of 1951! — Mary G. Youngberc. THE U.S.S. WEST CARROLLTON WEST CARROLLTON SCHOOL This, the West Carrollton School, is where, through the years that we have sat in its classrooms and trod its halls, — lasting friendships were formed and the foundations for our futures were laid. THE U.S.S. MORAINE MORAINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Our new school at Moraine City was completed for the 1950-51 school session. Its student body includes children from kindergarten through the sixth grade. These men leave no stone unturned to see that our school ranks among the top. DEAN OVER THE WAVES Miss Martha Dean, Dean of Girls Numerous and varied tasks confront Miss Martha Dean, our Dean of Girls. Into her ears go the troubles that almost any high school girl falls heiress to, and out of her splendid personality emerge the solutions. SUPERIOR The main office, where Superintendent Shade and Pat Simon, the West Carrollton School Secretary, are never too busy for a bright smile or greeting. Mr. Russell, with his multiple duties always finds time to talk with a student over any social or academic problem. Mr. C. F. Holliday, Clerk of the Board of Education, finds the financial affairs of both of our schools laid on his desk The job is arduous, but one for which Mr. Holliday is qualified. OFFICERS Mr. Schnell is always a capable administrator and a real guiding force among his teaching staff and student body. Mr. Cavender and Mary Payne, Moraine School Secretary, are highly respected because they actively help the students with their personal problems. Miss Edith Anstaett, School Librarian can look with pride at her methodically maintained Library. Wilson, Mgr. The West Carrollton Pirates' Baseball Team is composed largely of experienced players. Only a few players are gone from the former team. The pitching department retained the same members, and added one new player. The infield is also practically unchanged since only one player was graduated. The outfield is new throughout, and the catching section has one new member. The Southwestern Buckeye League has become a four sport League. The Pirates will play such members of the League as Vandalia-Butler. Trorwood-Madison, Eaton. West Milton, and Tipp City. Coach Eisele will plan the remainder of the schedule as the season progresses. TRACK Fint Row—R. Hendrickson, Mgr., G. Hunter, L Rose, O, Lowman, E. Courtney, D. Lonaker, F. Marriott. J. Ross. Second Row — Coach Bogan, W. Sturgill, R. Weller. W. Hartman, R. Brown, P Wright, G. Alexander, J. Courtney. S. Graban, Ass't Coach. Third Row — N. Grice, W. Smith, J. Donovan, C. Cornett, R. Grushon, R. Stuck, C. Hurst. This year our Track Team has the nucleus of being one of the strongest since Coach Bogan came to this school. The team has the experience, and possibly the balance to make it a winning team. Four members were lost this year by graduation. Two of them were in the field events, and two were sprinters. The team is bolstered by the return of six seniors, six juniors, and one sophomore from last year's team. The Pirates held their first home meet under the lights when they were hosts to the League Track Meet on April 19. They also attended such outstanding meets as Knights of Columbus in Cincinnati, and the Miami Relays at Oxford. CROSS COUNTRY G. Hunter, C. Hurst, O. Lowman, D. Lonaker, E. Courtney With the return of four runners, the Pirates had the main portion of their cross country team to go along with two new runners. The brightest spot of the fair season was the individual performance of Captain Ernest Courtney, who had a total of three firsts, one second, and one third. The Pirates ended the season by finishing sixth in a field of ten teams in the district with Courtney receiving a second, and qualifying for the state meet where he received a third place. In the first dual meet of the season, Tom Banta led Parker to a 20 to -15 victory, with Courtney picking up a first Courtney paced the Pirates in the second meet and they defeated Fairborn by a score of 19 to 39. Lowman, Lonaker. Hurst, and Ross finished third, fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively. Bob Milthalers paced the Stivers Tigers to a victory over the Pirates by a score of 20 to 35 with Courtney again getting a first. Edwards, E. Leiwig, B. Link. Second Rou------Mr Huffman, R. Schuder, A. McClelland, L. Whitworth, R Mumma. The Golf team is in its third season under the guidance of Mr. Huffman. This year two new members from the Junior Varsity were added. The team is led by Dick Mumma who was the lead-off man last year. Through the courtesy of the Miamisburg Mound Golf Course, the Pirate golphers were able to play their home matches there. The schedule remains practically the same as the previous one, and includes such prominent teams as Hamilton Public, Chaminade, Kiser, Fairmont, Oakwood, Xenia Central, and Lebanon. The team is participating in the Tri-State Golf Tourney. The District will be held at the Dayton Community Golf Course in May. HOCKEY First Row— P. Henry, J. McDaniel, M. Hile, D. Hicks. P. The Northridge game was a tie. and with Oakwood s second teem we lost by a score of 2-1. Even though we didn't do too well this year in scheduling games, we had a lot of fun in the intermurals. - ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ WEST CARROLLTON SIXTH GRADE MORAINE SIXTH GRADE First Rou----M.
