A. A. 3-4 As Time Goes By The 1946 senior class is a very musical group. We have many representatives in all the musical activities at W. C. H, S. lt seems to us, however, that the most music We have heard while in school has been The tune of the hickory stick . After a grade school life that took in all the usual adventures and misadventures of that period, We held our sixth grade graduation. As we look back, we re- member how proud we were of our caps and gowns. Iunior High gave us the much needed confidence we were to find so valuable upon entering high school. Who can ever forget the freshman reception which was given in our honor by the sophomores? ln spite of the terrible ordeal suffered by the poor freshies , we thoroughly enjoyed the dance held afterward. The junior play, FOOT-LOOSE, was quite a success, in spite of the many setbacks and difficulties which were encountered. The Iunior-Senior Reception, which we gave in honor of the Senior class, was looked forward to with great enthusiasm by the members of our class: nor were they disappointed. The affair went over with a bang, and the fried chicken and soothing Hawaiian music helped to make the occasion a success. Our senior play was a delightful comedy entitled YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, It seemed the weather man was against us, however, because there was a minor blizzard on the night of the performance and a slight crowd attended. The play was well done in spite of this, and the criticism was very favorable. The senior prom was by far the best event of its kind ever to be given at West Carrollton. The gym was beautifully decorated on a Victory theme by Mr. Kaiser with the aid of the senior boys. Eddie Iames and his orchestra made such sweet music that it even rivalled that of his more famous name-sake. The most exciting, yet the saddest year of our high school ended with the choosing of invitations and name cards. The exciting part came in the form of the many senior activities and the hope of everyone's eventual graduation. The sad part came in the reluctance of all of us to leave West Carrollton High School and all the friends whom we have made here. There will be an empty place in our hearts when we leave: and I am sure there will be an empty place in the halls of W. C. H. S. as well. Oh, What It Seemed To Be Our days at old West Carrollton High, Will soon have passed us by, Leaving each one with memories, To remember with a sigh. As we leave these halls oi learning 'To start down life's merry way, Each will have some pleasant thought To share with new friends he'll meet someday. Each student has some little trait, That sets him apart from the rest, So l'll try to put in rhyme the thoughts I think you'll like the best. The thing l'll remember about Ginny Mae, ls the way she changes her hair-do 'most every day. Phyllis and Norma much alike in a way, Are quiet and pleasant every day. Iune Johnson, a brownette, with a flare for the ball, ls tall and slender, and liked by all. We've seen many cheerleaders, Some good ones at that, But never two better Than lerry and Pat. Lefty and Lee are two people l know, Who will always make friends wherever they go. Givens, Hose, Cantrell, and Magee, Have joined the Navy and put out to sea. Mary Pauley, our tempestuous blonde, ls one to recall with memories fond. Gene doesn't care much for girls or romancing, He likes his photography and his dancing. There's a cute red headed miss in our class, You know who l mean -that Raulerson lass. Both John. and Bill are tall and slender, They always have some service to render. Carol and Gloria, the twins in our school, Are clever and charming and sweet as a rule. We'll always remember Don and his pranks, As for Moehring's historical novels, They're his, they're Frank's. Mary Lou Pressler has plenty of clothes, But we'11 always remember her cute little nose. The president of our class is Paul, He's nice, considerate, and liked by all. Myers, Critzer, and Coatney We'll all recall, For the record they made in basketball. Arlene Stevens as you can see, Is pretty and just as sweet as can be. Bob Morris is a handsome lad, And with the girls he doesn't do bad. There's Bob Stephenson, who's attending Ohio State, He's clever, brilliant, and so sedate. Nadine and Barbara break that old rule 'Bout beauty and brains, They're the pride of the school. Lowell Mesarvey who has joined the Air Corps, Has personality and charm galore. Catherine Zennie, is sweet and kind, And in athletics she's never outshined. l Another favorite is Tabo Shimizu, He's one We'll remember And always be glad we knew. Eugene Carter is a quiet gent, Time with him is time well spent. And last but not least is one ever near us, We all call her Pooch , but the name's Peggy Pierce. My name is Peggy - that's all I need say, Now my poem is over So l'l1 bid you good-day. Characters: The respected leaders of an active high school class: Presidents, Iim Brennon and Iohn Throck- mortonq Vice Presidents, Iack Combs and Ko Shimizug Secretaries, Nancy Graham and Doris Tuttleg Treasurers, Wilma Downard and Marilyn Iohnson. These char- acters , along with Miss Dean and Miss Anstaett, hold the main parts. They are, however, not the only people in this little drama from life. They are upheld by a large cast oi supporting players. The Plot: On October 5, 1945, the players start their long journey by systematically receiving a terrible drubbing at the hands of the sophomores. Not content with this, they continue to torture themselves by having a Halloween party at which everyone gets nicely mussed up. The players seem to have parties on the brain, be- cause they turn right around and throw another shin- dig for St. Valentine's Day. Now, our ambitious amateurs turn to a tamer sort of entertainment, They have organized a checker tournament and are so self-confident that they are challenging any upper-classman who thinks he is good enough, to a private bout. Although the plot of this little skit hasn't much body yet, the players have three years in which to build a line organization. They are looking forward to these years with great expectation, and hope to make the best of them. EIGHTH GRADE M. r Q, .W X. nf FIRST GROUP FIRST ROW--C. Frozure, B. Fcrullfner, E. Alexander, D. The programs and so- cial activities were all planned to carry out these ideals. The annual induction ceremony was held with the Hi-Y club in an inspiring candle- light service at the Methodist Church. One of their most pleasant memories of the year is the hay-ride and Weiner roast enjoyed with the Hi-Y. The club members made a study of boy and girl relationships. Mrs. Du Val began Pres.... ..... .... the series of programs with a lecture at the Y. W. C. A. To acquire a better understanding oi some of the racial problems they invited the Dunbar Girl Reserves to one of their meetings. At another time each girl represented a foreign country. She brought a dish ol food and dressed in costume according to the customs of her adopted country. As a service project the club packed an overseas box for the starving people of Europe. The club had as its very capable officers: Bill Andrews, president: lohn Werth, vice president: Lee Robinett, secretary: Sam Heck, treasurer. Mr. Brown, the club's efficient advisor, deserves credit for the year's varied and in- teresting program. Some of the more outstanding events of the year were: A joint induction service with the Girl Reserve Club at the Methodist Church: a party on the Black Knight Hill in their cabing the state Older Boy's Conference at Columbus in lanuaryg a swim at the Y , and a talk in the Chapel the same evening: a talk by V. L. Hagen, the new county secre- tary, in October: and a talk by Mr. Mawhin- ney, recently returned from the service. The club supervised the collection and distribution of baskets at Christmas and was very active in various other projects through- out the year. The last outstanding event of the year was the Spring Conference held at North- ridge High School. The conference was led by Reverend Bob Sherfy of New Carlisle. lt consisted of twelve group conferences, meals, and recreation. Hi-Y boys from all the coun- ty schools attended. A picnic followed by a meeting of the Senior members, who nominated next year's officers, concluded the activities of this suc- cessful year. FIRST GROUP FIRST ROW-I. Stevens, M. Bobinette, C. We're here to play, so we'l1 obey We'll earn some points, and get a reward And in this task, we'll not be bored. As G. A. A. members we pledge our- selves to become healthier and wiser. Any girl in high school who takes gym is eligible tor membership in this organization. Under the point system which is a part of the G. A. A. constitution a limited number of points is given for participation in a group of selected sports. This list includes hockey, basketball, volleyball, baseball, and several other sports. Hikes and dances frequently re- place the more strenuous competitive games. This year girls who have earned 100 points in senior or 50 points in junior G. A. A. will receive letters. This second semester the G. A. A. mem- bers have been getting acquainted With club girls from neighboring schools. Miamisburg and Fairmont girls have been our Quests when basketball, volleyball, and baseball were enjoyed. Although this club is one ot the newest organizations in our high school their future looks bright. Sl1ortnin' Bread Good, Better, Best, We'll never let it rest Until the good is better And the better, best. This is the slogan oi the Future Home- makers of America KF. H. AJ who were or- ganized last year under the leadership of Miss Ruth Deacon. Anyone taking Home Economics or having taken it last year is eligible for membership. Miss Mary Mar- garet Iones is the adviser this year and is very active with the girls. This year's officers are: President, Mary lane Pauley: Vice President, lerry Io Freed: Secretary, Ruth Wicklinep Treasurer, Ruth Smith: Devotional Chairman, Shirley Givens. Mrs. Rena Givens and Mrs. Ruby Wick- line, are the club mothers. They assist in supervising our parties and dances. Last year Miss Deacon and four girls went to the State Home Economics Conven- tion and had a very instructive weekend there. This year We've had parties which in- cluded a Come as you are party , Moon- light hayride, and several dances which were very successful. We are trying now to better the appear- ance of the Home Economics laboratory so that it will be a better place in which to Work. The club colors are green and white, and the motto is: As our girlhood is now, so shall our Womanhood be. . We are trying to live up to our slogan and make the club even better next year. The band performed ably under the instruction of the new di- rector, Mr. Miller. Many new formations were used by the band in order to put on a more impressive performance. After football season, the band settled down to some hard practice on concert music. They played for a few basketball games which helped to ease the monotony of straight classical pieces. After much prepara- tion, the band was ready for its big moment. The Spring Festival was held on March 25, and everyone agreed that the band had done well. Besides the regular continuity of semi- popular and classical music, the trumpet quartet played a fast number entitled Bal Masque . Lately, the band has been getting a few popular pieces for use as warm-ups and novelty tunes. These have proved quite popular with both the audience and band members, so the general prediction is that 'there will be more of these in use in the future. Many ensembles .from West Carrollton are looking forward to the annual music contest held at Oxford. They hope to place well-up on the list. The band wishes to thank Mr. Miller for his fine direction and amiable cooperation in guiding and assisting tliem in their efforts to make beautiful music. Symphony Until l928 there was no school orchestra An orchestra, made up of townspeople, offi- ciated at-all the school affairs where an. or- chestra was needed. With Charles Moates, I. H. Garster, Raymond Shade and William Foote as directors, this West Carrollton or- chestra contributed the musical part of school programs, plays, and commencements. When Charles Patterson became the music director in l928, the orchestra we have today had its real start. This high school orchestra with its ever increasing member- ship has contributed much to the spirit of the school. This year, under the direction of Mr. Frcnk Miller, many new pieces have been obtained for all of the groups in the musical education branch of the high school. The orchestra has received many of these, and has been kept busy working them into shape for its many activities. At the junior play, the string section played several selections before curtain time and during the intermission. However, for the senior play, the full orchestra turned out to play many of the new numbers which recently had been obtained. With the graduation exercises, the year's activity of the orchestra comes to a close. FIRST GROUP FIRST ROW-I. Stevens, I. Ionas. SECOND ROW-C. Doolittle, D. Barnes, V. Moyer, I. Combs, P. The 1946 high school chorus started the year by doinq some Work in semi- popular songs. Several negro spirituals were also practiced. The chorus is now Working on its biq event ot the year, an operetta in combination with a talent show. Mr. Miller, the director, has obtained a short Gilbert and Sullivan operetta entitled Trial by lury . The plot is interestina and promises to provide an entertaining program. BASKETBALL The Pirates finished the l945-46 season by winning 7 games and losing 8. The Pirates, however, held third place in the Little Six League by defeating Osborn, Leb- anon, and O. S. ci S. O., and losing only to Franklin and Northridge, last year's class B state champs. The Pirates defeated one of their oldest rivals, Miamisburg, by the score of 24 to 22 in a hard fought contest. Every season is considered a success when they defeat these traditional enemies. ln the district tournament at the Oakwood gym, the Pirates were defeated in their first attempt at glory. Camden, champs in their county, led W'est Carrollton all the way in a very one-sided contest. Of the first ten players to go to the tourna- ment, only three will graduate this spring. This should leave a strong team for next year. Graduating are: Amo Critzer, lack Coatney, and Tabo Shimizu. Although not many in number, all of these fellows will be missed by the squad. lack Strader was placed on the first string of the All Little Six team as forward, and A mo Critzer was chosen as guard on the second string. Elmer Smith took high scoring honors for the year by scoring 142 points. Second and third were lack Strader with lO4 and lohn McNabb with lOU points. The other members of the team, in order of scoring, were: Amo Critzer, 73 points, lack Coatney, 64 points, Paul Greene, l5 pointsy Tabo Shimizu, lO points, lohn Throckmorton, 5 points, lames Morton, 5 points: Max Myers, 4 points, Donald Starnes, 3 points, Paul Shade, 2 pointsy and Gerald Knight, l point. FOOTBALLL The W'est Carrollton Pirates came through the i945 season by winning 2 games, losing 6, and tying l. After dropping their first two games, the Pirates got their first taste of victory since l943 by defeating Hillsboro 26 to 6. The Pirates took their spite out on O. S. G S. O. and Lebanon by soundly defeating the first, and tying the second after decidedly outplaying them in the first half. These games contributed a great deal in helping the Pirates to tie for fourth place in the Little Six League. The teams which beat us in the league were Franklin, Osborn, and Northridge, the league champs. Although W'est Carrollton was soundly defeated, the Northridge game was by far the most exciting of the lot. The boys showed both the fans and the Northridge team that a squad with grit and lots of spirit can give a faster, heavier, and more experienced team a whale of a battle. Vtfho can forget the rough time Wickline gave that 240-pound tackle? Only a few men from the starting line-up will not be back next year, so West Carroll' ton is anticipating a stronger, and more ex- perienced team in the future. The Pirates placed one man on the All Little Six team. lack Strader won the coveted spot, and Bob Lawhorn and Tabo Shimizu earned positions on the second string. lack Strader was the highest scorer for the Pirates in l945, and Lowell Mesarvey was elected captain by his team-mates.
