B. 5 - l-loricon 0 Page Twenty-four At the opening meet, April II, our cindermen nosed out Oconomowoc 60 to 53 in the first dual. Several firsts were taken by the home team: Salter in the 880-yard run, Murphy in the shot put, l-linsenkamp in the mile, Schalles in the low hurdles, Huber in the pole vault, Schalles in the high jump and Varnes in the broad jump. At the first home meet of the season April I9, the Runkelmen defeated Hart- ford 62 to 5I. West Bend scored five firsts, nine seconds and six thirds. Traveling to Port Washington on May 9, West Bend placed fifth in the regional meet, earning I9 points. Entering the quadrangular meet with Whitefish Bay, Port Washington and Hartford on April 25, West Bend finished third, collecting 33M points. Ray Hinsen- kamp betterecl his own mile record with a 4:50.7 performance. Next the local boys nosed out Hart- ford for second place in a triangular meet held here. Port Washington took first with 81 5X6 points. West Bend collected 58 3f6 and Hartford massed 57 4f6. Hinsenkamp and Becker scored firsts in the mile and 880-yard run. Seconds for West Bend were Hancock the shot, Lemke the mile, Stier the pole vault, Tangney the 440-yard dash, Petri the I00-yard dash, and Varnes the 220-low hurdles and broad jump. iamond DU5 The I942 baseball season was another huge success. The Benders won the south- ern division championship and shared the Little Ten Championship with Waupun which took the prize in the northern divis- ion. The play-off game between the two champs was called off in the third inning because of rain. The success of the team was due to three things: good pitching, excellent bat- ting power, and co-operation between the players and the coach. The pitchers for the Benders were Kirst, Schmidt, and Kral. High batting averages went to H. Gumm 470, H. Kirst 385, l... Kral 363, A. Schmidt 354, R. Caspari 343, Kies 322, and R. l-larth 3I3. All in all the boys played tip-top ball, and Coach Holzhueter should be given much credit for guiding his team to a championship for the second year in a row. During the '43 season the tire situa- tion caused the games to be cut to six inning double-headers thus cutting travel in half. At the same time the number of games played remained the same: eight games were played.

hrough a or When the basketball season began, Coach Caldwell had about 25 boys from which to pick a squad. The varsity had a tough I4-game schedule to wade through. With only a few veterans from last year Coach Caldwell molded another powerful de- fensive unit. The boys won only four games, but this doesnit tell the whole story. Even though they never got their shooting up, they made it plenty tough for their opponents to connect. They used a shifting man to man and tight zone defense to hold many of their opponents to low scores. Of the I2 men on the squad, four were seniors and eight were juniors. The four seniors were: Robert Caspari, center or forward, the main offensive cog and good defen- sive man. Francis Murphy, center, a power on re- bounds and an all-round defense man. Aubrey I'Ier- man, guard or forward, a good team player and defense man. Anthony Bell, guard, a good play maker and fast on bringing up the ball. The eight juniors were: Robert Rolfs, center, used his height to good advantageg an accurate shot. Lloyd Kral, guard, very good long shot artist and good on defense. Ralph Klein, forward, short but iffiwli Sched IQ fast: a good eye for the basket. Cy Kluever, guard, swell team player and a hawk on defense. Charley Wagner, forward, fast but small, was a good ball handler. Dave Sauer, guard, excellent playmaker, consistent on offense and defense. Ed German, cen- ter, shifty ball handler and a good team player. Frank Schwab, guard, fast ball handler and a good defensive player. Although seriously handicapped from the beginning of the season, because of the shortage of tennis balls, the West Bend tennis team swung into action early in April. After only a few weeks of practice the team began to shape up and Coach Hildebrand had hopes for a successful season. The doubles team composed of Robert Hiller and Robert Jaekel were in top condition. Bud Weinand, last year's Little Ten Conference Singles Champion, was out to repeat his performance of last year. The first meet confirmed the teamis highest hopes. West Bend traveled to Hartford and won by the impressive score of 6-0. Next week the team met a power- ful foe in Mayville, but Mayville was de- feated 3-l. Three days later West Bend suffered a defeat in the Triangular Meet. Beaver Dam placed first with 9, West Bend second with 3 points, and Hartford third with no points. On May 7, West Bend met one of the state's most powerful teams, White- fish Bay and was swamped, 5-0. A week later the team played host to Oconomowoc and lost 4-3. Several members of the team jour- neyed to Manitowoc to participate in the state tennis tournament. Buddy Wei- nand made a fine showing but was de- feated by the player who became state champion. V Y i ot gge 's The i942 golf season was noted for its keen rivalry. All schools in the Little Ten were out for blood. Although West Bend did not take any trophies or champion- ships, the team gave a good account of itself. The pace-setters in the Little Ten were Hartford and Oconomowoc, with Hartford finally winning out in the con- ference meet. The West Bend team com- posed of Bob Rolfs, Bob Kaempfer, George Jansen, Bob Schacht, and Paul German in the order of proficiency, played in a total of seven matches which was climaxed by a trip to the state meet at Lake Geneva. ln the conference meet West Bend placed fifth, and in the state meet ranked thirteenth out of a total of twenty-three teams participating, It was with regret that the team re- ceived the news that golf had to be called off for the duration by the conference officials. Four members from last year's team would have been back with added experience and playing ability. The team is coached by Athletic Director R. T. Grignon. MEET RECORDS April 27 -- Quadrangle at Mayville: 1, Beaver Damg 2, West Bendg 3, Mayvilleg 4, Waupun. Racquet on Again West Bend played host to the Little Ten Tennis Tournament. All boys made a fine showing. Bud Weinand fought his way to the semi-Hnals where he was finally beaten. The doubles team of Hiller and Jaekel, although defeated in the early rounds came back to win the Consolation Prize in the doubles. Ralph Klein placed second in the Consolation singles. B.
