When the I943 football season closed, the West Bend fans had seen the most outstanding football squad in years, a team that held first place until the last game on the schedule, when a 6 to 0 win by Oconomowoc gave the Benders second place. The squad from the coaches' standpoint was really a pleasure to work with because the boys were willing to learn and had that never say die spirit. When in a game, the fellows were out to win and gave all they had to achieve that goal. One cannot point out individual stars because it wasn't a team of one or two stars. Each player was dependent on the other boys. On defense they were as good as on offensive. Very seldom were the opponents able to get away for any long runs or make any substantial gains on passes. It was a team of eleven players that piled up six wins out of seven starts for a total of l28 points to their opponents I5 points. ln the backfield we had power built around Kies and Kirst, speed built around Petri and Varnes, and blocking by Tangney, Pete, and Salter. The quarterbacks Pete and Salter showed great in- genuity in calling plays. Petri and Tangney carried Page Twenty R. Weiss, J. Gerner, J. Kincaide out the passing assignments while Kies did the punting. ln the line the ends were Caspari, Murphy, Kratzer, and Prechtel, all seniors. The four ends were a coach's dream. All over six feet and good pass snatchers. Prechtel was injured early in the season and consequently did not see much action. Many of the long gains were engineered around the ends or were brought about by the downfield block- ing of these boys. The coach always felt he could substitute the ends freely because he knew he woulcln't' weaken the team. Caspari and Kratzer were the pass catchers while Murphy booted the extra points, The tackles were Marth, Yahr, Boden, and Bascom. All were seniors except Bascom, a junior. Our tackles were very strong all season. Despite the fact that Yahr was changed from end to tackle, he played well throughout the season. Marth was es- pecially powerful on defense. Boden was a very dependable reserve. Bascom will be a starter on next year's team. Many of the plays went through the tackles and were always sure yardage. Our guard positions, filled by Hron, Sonnen- berg, Kincaide, and Weiss, were power-houses on offense and defense. Sonnenberg and Hron were

Donna Schowalter This year it has been more important than ever be- fore that the girls participate in G. A. A. activities, because every girl has been so busy with her studies and the additional effort with the war plan. Almost every girl has taken part in some activity in her high school career. The activities of G. A. A. are varied. The sports program has basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis and the recreational sports such as shuffle board, deck tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Every Tuesday and Friday these female comman- dos have the use of the gym. During the course of the year the girls have had several encounters with the boys in basketball and volleyball especially. Naturally the boys won, but the girls had loads of fun. ln practically every- one of these sports inter-class competition has been very high. The seniors won the volleyball tourna- ment, and the juniors the basketball tournament. Page Twenty-two The G. A. A. Initiation Party is one of the highlights of the social life of the members. There is one requirement: each girl must have earned one- hundred points per hour or mile per hike. Part of the points must be earned in G. A. A. activities in school. The week before the initiation, the initiates are tensed with anticipation of what the ensuing days hold for them. The initiates are required to do some of the queerest things, Some of them were seen strolling down the halls as cannibals, others as de- butantes, still others wore pajamas and had miscel- laneous black eyes and lipstick smutches. The follow- ing day was the day of reckoning, and they had to work for their refreshments. After the refreshments were served games and pranks were played. Thirty- one girls finally became official members at that time. When a member has earned l200 points, she is entitled to a WB. Those who have earned l943 WB's are: Doris Cooley, Doris Geiclel, Margaret Gumm, Donna Schowalter, and Doris Gonnering. These WB's are much coveted but any girl with a lot of spunk can earn one. The climax of the G. A. A. year came when the classes of Miss Jacobson and Mr. Caldwell combined to give a gym exhibition.
