E. 1Vlcl..ane, was born in I872 and died on September 16, I942, having served the West Bend Public Schools for thirty-seven years. He received his teacher training at the Whitewater Normal School. Prof lVlcl..ane, as he was known to students, was probably the best-liked teacher and administrator in this community. While his methods of teaching and admin- istrating were forceful, they were by no means severe or harsh. There are countless men and women today in West Bend who received instruction from Mr, lVlcl..ane. These people will always remember his kindness and patience. Mr. McLane contributed much to our school life by cleverly taking charge of assemblies, handing out diplo- mas, conferring with students and teachers, and perform- ing countless other duties. Today, the ones who knew him personally miss the familiar, lovable personality that passed through the halls frequently. ln honor of his thirty-seven years of service the new grade school was named The McLane School and will perpetuate his memory for many years to come. At, the Dedication Service, Mr. O. H. Plenzke, secretary of the Wisconsin Education Association, summed up Mr. lVlcl..ane's character extremely well when he said, He was so human and so humane. Klumb ln dedicating The 1943 Bend we, the class of '43, feel that we are presenting it to two out- standing men of the West Bend High School faculty. Both were successful and well-liked coaches, Mr. Runkel in track and Mr. Caldwell in football and basketball. Coach Runkel, who has been in the navy as a seaman first class since October 20, 1942, came to West Bend High School in 1930 and has been in charge of track ever since. The record he has left behind' is a hard one to beat, his teams winning I3 trophies including a state championship. Coach Caldwell has only been at West Bend for two years but in that time has won an envious position for himself. He is recognized as an out- standing football and basketball mentor. Through his coaching, the '42 football season was one of the most successful in years, finishing for a second in the Little Ten Conference. During the school term he was reclassified and expects to leave for the navy off1cer's training some time in june. Since both of these men are worthy of high tribute, the class of '43 takes this means of honoring their teaching in West Bend High School. We hope that they will resume their posi- tions in West Bend High School after the war and carry on with their teaching and coaching practices. , r - K 4... School Board -- Mrs. George Kuehlthau, Dr. A. H. Heidne1', Superintendent M. G. Batho, Mr. A. H. Klumb, Mr. E. J. Krieger, Mr. D. J. Kenny. ollcy Makers The most active and responsible organ of any school is the board of education composed of individuals who possess patience and business ability. The members are outstanding in community work as well as in their own professions. They are well informed and experienced in the functioning of education as their terms have run from 25 years down. Briefly, the duties of the school board are to legislate, formulate, and adopt policies upon the advice of the professional staff and community. One job which has kept them tremendously busy because of the war is that of hiring teachers. Eight teachers and two janitors have been engaged since January l, 1942. Once a month the superintendent of schools, lVlr. Batho, secures, organizes and presents full information about the school to the board. This report includes such things as attendance, state of the finances, and the results being obtained. On the basis of this information, policies and plans are formulated for the best interests of the students. The school board is responsible for the welfare of approximately I,000 students and performs its job with the utmost diligence and discretion. ln its policy the board endeavors to run school affairs efficiently, and not to Sched Ie Makers-- regiment them. Page Thi ee Page Four ow Coorsos . . . ow rposos The task of putting West Bend High School on a war time schedule was a big one, and took the combined ef- fort of the administration, faculty and student body. Be- fore launching a definite program, Superintendent lVl, G. Batho and Principal N. E.. Colby made an extensive study of war programs in other schools and took several field trips to see these systems in operation. A plan was finally drafted that would cover the main issues, and two short semesters after war broke out, a four-point program was in full swing: CU training students for jobs in essential industries, C21 orientation of the school curriculum, f3Q toughening students for the armed forces, and C45 co- operation and aid to the war effort on the home front. This schedule at the beginning of the I943 semester placed West Bend High School on a war footing. The assignment of training students for jobs in essential industries naturally fell to the vocational school with its facilities for instruction in shop work. Here, under the guidance of Mr. johnson, the students have the op- portunity of working with grinders, drill presses, lathes, polishers and all the other machines used for metal work. Each student is given a project on which he performs all the essential operations from the bare shapeless piece of metal in the beginning, to the exact, polished, completed article. On his ability to complete each operation and on the excellence of the finished product the student is given a grade. Class in Metal Shop -- O. Lochen, C. McDonald Thus each pupil became acquainted with the opera- tion of many of the fundamental machines used in metal work. Upon the completion of his work in the vocational school the student can be the more readily absorbed into the vital war industries. Students of West Bend are also offered a course in drafting as a further means of fitting them for war work in essential industries. Mr. Schuelke has accelerated his instructions so that his classes may accomplish more. ln the drafting classes the students learn how to handle triangles, protractors, T squares. The pupils soon be- come adept in making accurate ink drawings done to scale. The students are given actual diagrams of levers, adjusting blocks, gears from which they make their scale drawings. This class is designed to give the student the maximum of drafting knowledge and experience in the minimum of time. At the end of the course the graduate is fitted to take a position in the drafting department of an industry. The manual training department, where the boys become familiar with most of the wood working tools used in modern wood shops, gives excellent training for jobs in war plants. Here, as in the metal shop, each stu- dent has his own project on which he performs all the steps needed to complete the useful product. The stu- dents in the wood shop have access to wood lathes, power saws, planers, and become skillful in their use. But the availability of these mechanical units does not de- tract from instruction in the use of the manual tools. Top -- Lessons in World History: R. Althaus, A. Jordan, V. Dalum Bottom -- Helping to Save a Potato Crop: Mr. Wegner, C. Westenberger, F. Schwamb, W. Jacklin West Bend ees en War Schedule ln fact it is emphasized that a maximum of work be done with the hand tools. This puts the responsibility for a good neat job on the ability of the students, and that is the fundamental purpose of the course, The students build tables, bird houses, shelves, flower boxes, and many other articles to be used at home. After a period of train- ing in the wood shop most pupils learn the correct use of tools of all kinds, and above all learn to build and create things with their hands. This training is invaluable to the student. These courses in the metal shop, drafting class and wood shop are the high schoolis answer to the first part of the four point program: the training of young Ameri- cans for jobs in essential industries. The problem of orienting the school curriculum was met largely by intensifying the courses of study that would best qualify a student to take his place as a work- ing American citizen. The most outstanding move in this direction came in the history department where a course in World His- tory was provided. Here under the direction of Miss Weber, the students receive a well-rounded background of the world's history calculated to give them a fuller understanding of the problems facing the world today and some idea of the reasons for nationalistic trends and prejudices. The Home Nurses -- A. Prost, C. Vogt, J. Schneider, D. Vanderwalker, D, Schowalter, Miss Forbes The work in this course is designed so that the stu- dent will be able to take a broader view of present prob- lems, acquaint himself with the mistakes of the past, and prepare himself generally for the task of reconstruction. This attitude is not confined merely to World History but is also emphasized in the United States and Modern History courses. Another study which is proving its value to the war schedule is citizenship. It is here that the younger students receive the very foundation on which to build their lives as useful men and women of the community. This study awakens within the pupils a consciousness of their respon- sibilities as good citizens. They are instructed in the func- tions of the various branches of the government and the primary facts concerning utilities, newspapers, railroads, etc. The instructors have oriented these classes into the war program by stressing the study of current events, impressing upon the students the importance of keeping abreast of the news. Thus, the emphasis on history, citizenship, and cur- rent events is the fulfillment of point two on the War Schedule: orientation of the school curriculum. Third, by establishing refresher courses in the es- sential studies, West Bend High is training its students for service in the armed forces. The most startling of new courses offered for the development of special skills, needed by the armed forces, is the aeronautics class under the supervision of lVlr. Reis. Top -- Campaigning for War Savings: D. Casper, G. Gumm, Mr. Robert Rolfs Bottom -- Registering for Gas Rations: H. Miller, M. Klein, C. Yahr, D. Goebels, F. Holz Page Five Page Six ndamontals for Victor This course gives the student a fundamental knowledge that is designed to aid him in his studies at pre-Hight school. He learns the basic principles of flight, studies the construction of aircraft, the prim- ary principles of navigation and meteorology. Some of the students are taking flying lessons at the West Bend airport, and the aeronautics course dovetails nicely with this flight training. Besides aiding him in pre-Hight school, the course enhances the student's chances of acceptance in the air branches of the services. The science courses take on new significance in the war effort. The physics classes under the supervision of lVlr. Colby are directing their study in the channels calculated to give students the great- est advantage in the armed forces. The students in this subject receive instructions in the operation and use of laboratory equipment, learn the basic theories of physical laws, and study the principles of elec- tricity. The class instruction is augmented by labor- atory periods when the truths of the class discussion are proved. lVlr. Grignon, instructor of chemistry, teaches his classes the basic factors involved in chemical analysis. They are instructed in the use of symbols, equations, and formulas. They learn by doing and carry out experiments of reaction and analysis. Top -- Armistice Program: George Landvatter, Dr. A. C. Marth, Frank Scharrer Bottom -- Tom Sonnenberg shoots the sun It goes without saying that this course pro- vides the student with the necessary information to carry his studies on through college or gives him the needed equipment for special training and special service in the armed forces. Under the direction of Miss Shipman, the mathematic refresher classes review the field of mathematics. The exercises are designed for the sole purpose of preparing the students for the various examinations and tests required by the military services. To prepare its boys physically, the high school has inaugurated a vigorous training program. lVlr. Caldwell has outlined a plan of training for his 'icommandosn that would do justice to the Ameri- can Rangers in England. Rope climbing, scaling walls, duck waddling are just a few of the exer- cises. The program is comparatively new and prob- ably will not reach its full capacity until the out- door obstacle course is completed. This hardening program for securing top physi- cal condition is characteristic of the way West Bend students have mobilized for war. Aeronautics courses, mathematic science class- es, and the physical training program are the units that train the boys for induction, thus meeting the third point of the program. The fourth and last point of the war time schedule for West Bend High School is the co-oper- ation that is essential for the home front. Top -- Reviewing Elementary Math: D. Kurtz, R. Hron, M. Kratzer, R. Rolfs Bottom --Practical Experiments in Physics: D. Vanderwalker, P. Salter, C. Yahr Uggin for ncle Sam Possibly one of the gravest problems facing the country is the lack of doctors and trained nurses. This situation has vitally affected the home front. Because the high school was determined to aid in maintaining the home front, it was only natural that Miss Kuehl- thau's home nursing classes should take steps to help solve this problem. The girls enrolled in this class are instructed in the correct way to take care of sick in the home, thereby easing the demand for trained nurses. The special first aid classes conducted by Mr. Batho, Mr. Colby, Miss Jacobson, Mr. Caldwell, and Dr. P. M. Kauth are designed to meet the shortage of doctors and nurses should a serious emergency arise. Upon completing this course, the first-aiders will be qualified to administer first aid as prescribed by the Red Cross, thus relieving the demand for doctors on calls for minor cuts and bruises. Other students are maintaining the Home Front in a very direct way by supplying the personnel for regis- tering the people of West Bend for the various ration books, namely gasoline and food. The students have donated a total of three thousand six hundred four hours away from their studies in working for the ra- tioning board. Merit certificates have been awarded. Pete Bottom-Class in Crafts: Mr. Reis, T. Rattray, C. Westenberger, L. Prechtel, D. Dayton The West Bend Student Body is not only giving up time to the war effort, but is investing close to two hundred dollars a week in War Savings Bonds and Stamps. The war activities committee of the Student Senate is doing an excellent piece of work in co-ordi- nating the student body to the four point program. It is this committee that handles the Red Cross drives and the salvage campaigns within the school. Through activities in Home Nursing, Red Cross, Civilian Defense, and War Bonds and Stamps, West Bend High is aiding in the maintenance of a strong home front designed to permit every student to carry a part of the burden of the war. By the second semester the students at West Bend began to show even more enthusiasm for the war pro- gram. Seniors were looking forward to the time when they could serve their country in uniform, and most of those who foresaw eventual draft applied for and took the V-I2 examinations which would allow some to enter college as part of their training. By June many of the boys had taken their physical examinations and enlisted in the reserve corps to await the call to the colors. An indication of the enthusiasm with which the boys prepared themselves physically for their induc- tion was the physical education demonstration. One of the features of this exposition was the presentation of Caldwell's Commandos. Up and down ladders, over and under walls and obstacles, the lads swarmed with an endless display of energy and skill. This enthusiasm for the war program was not confined to the senior boys alone but pervaded the entire student body as evidenced by the response to the second war loan. One week the sale of bonds and stamps approached the one thousand dollar mark, and the students continued to 'bv lend more and more of their money to the gov- ernment as the drive progressed. indeed, by the end of the second semester the dividends of the war time schedule began to be realized, and West Bend was truly expending all of its energy for victory. Truly the entire school was plugging for Uncle Sam. Supervising Drafting -- Mr. Schuelke, R. Albinger, W. Jaeckels, R. Hetebrueg, B. IQ-freshmen-46 he Year arad The war has played an important part in the activities of West Bend High School this past year. From the first moment that the students of the class of '46 entered these halls to take entrance examinations the aim of the entire student body and faculty has been centered around whole-hearted co-op- eration. The freshmen have played their part in the school's activities and have learned what new and exciting thrills await them when they rise to the ranks of upper- classmen. When we entered classes last fall. little did we know how close the war would be brought to our front door. lVlany of our instructors entered the armed forces which created the big problem of 'iwhere to get teachers. Upon his entrance into the United States Navy, lVlr. Runkel was presented with a token of appreciation from the boys in the WB Club. Mr. Runkel was track coach, the assistant football coach, as well as an able instructor in history. Top -- Mr. Colby administers Freshman entrance tests Bottom, left -- C. Hansen, M. Gehl, R. Willkomm, H. Miller, R. Schacht Bottom, right -- J. Nehring, R, Klein Genuine morale lifters were the three one-act plays presented in the fall under the direction of Mr. Olson. The Dummy, one of the comedies, was particularly hilarious. The other two comedies, His First Date and Nobody Home proved to be enter- taining performances. Homecoming this year had a more seri- ous trend than that of previous years. Be- cause there was no bonhre, the person who found the toothpick had the honor of crown- ing the Queen of the Homecoming. The lovely queen, Joyce Nehring, elected by the student body, presided graciously over the evening's festivities. Joyce selected as her king, Ralph Klein who reigned with her over the gala occasion. Homecoming day brought a welcome guest to our stage to tell us about navy life. He was Ensign Baechler, one of our teachers who taught bookkeeping and assisted in training the basketball team before he en- tered the ordnance department of the Navy. Early in the fall a triumph was scored by the senior class when Cal Claus won the presidency and Tom Sonnenberg was suc- cessful in obtaining the office of secretary- treasurer of the student senate. Victor janz, a sophomore, was elected vice-president. Top -- The WB boys say good-bye to Mr. Runkel Botton, left -- Mr. Baechler shows up for homecoming Bottom, right -- Student Senate: C. Claus, T. When the I943 football season closed, the West Bend fans had seen the most outstanding football squad in years, a team that held first place until the last game on the schedule, when a 6 to 0 win by Oconomowoc gave the Benders second place. The squad from the coaches' standpoint was really a pleasure to work with because the boys were willing to learn and had that never say die spirit. When in a game, the fellows were out to win and gave all they had to achieve that goal. One cannot point out individual stars because it wasn't a team of one or two stars. Each player was dependent on the other boys. On defense they were as good as on offensive. Very seldom were the opponents able to get away for any long runs or make any substantial gains on passes. It was a team of eleven players that piled up six wins out of seven starts for a total of l28 points to their opponents I5 points. ln the backfield we had power built around Kies and Kirst, speed built around Petri and Varnes, and blocking by Tangney, Pete, and Salter. The quarterbacks Pete and Salter showed great in- genuity in calling plays. Petri and Tangney carried Page Twenty R. Weiss, J. Gerner, J. Kincaide out the passing assignments while Kies did the punting. ln the line the ends were Caspari, Murphy, Kratzer, and Prechtel, all seniors. The four ends were a coach's dream. All over six feet and good pass snatchers. Prechtel was injured early in the season and consequently did not see much action. Many of the long gains were engineered around the ends or were brought about by the downfield block- ing of these boys. The coach always felt he could substitute the ends freely because he knew he woulcln't' weaken the team. Caspari and Kratzer were the pass catchers while Murphy booted the extra points, The tackles were Marth, Yahr, Boden, and Bascom. All were seniors except Bascom, a junior. Our tackles were very strong all season. Despite the fact that Yahr was changed from end to tackle, he played well throughout the season. Marth was es- pecially powerful on defense. Boden was a very dependable reserve. Bascom will be a starter on next year's team. Many of the plays went through the tackles and were always sure yardage. Our guard positions, filled by Hron, Sonnen- berg, Kincaide, and Weiss, were power-houses on offense and defense. Sonnenberg and Hron were Petri, James SEASON RECORD West Bend I4 - West Bend l 3 1 West Bend 26 1 West Bend 2 7 1 West Bend 32 1 West Bend 26 1 West Bend 0 1 Salter, Phil . . Pete, George . Donna Schowalter This year it has been more important than ever be- fore that the girls participate in G. A. A. activities, because every girl has been so busy with her studies and the additional effort with the war plan. Almost every girl has taken part in some activity in her high school career. The activities of G. A. A. are varied. The sports program has basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis and the recreational sports such as shuffle board, deck tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Every Tuesday and Friday these female comman- dos have the use of the gym. During the course of the year the girls have had several encounters with the boys in basketball and volleyball especially. Naturally the boys won, but the girls had loads of fun. ln practically every- one of these sports inter-class competition has been very high. The seniors won the volleyball tourna- ment, and the juniors the basketball tournament. Page Twenty-two The G. A. A. Initiation Party is one of the highlights of the social life of the members. There is one requirement: each girl must have earned one- hundred points per hour or mile per hike. Part of the points must be earned in G. A. A. activities in school. The week before the initiation, the initiates are tensed with anticipation of what the ensuing days hold for them. The initiates are required to do some of the queerest things, Some of them were seen strolling down the halls as cannibals, others as de- butantes, still others wore pajamas and had miscel- laneous black eyes and lipstick smutches. The follow- ing day was the day of reckoning, and they had to work for their refreshments. After the refreshments were served games and pranks were played. Thirty- one girls finally became official members at that time. When a member has earned l200 points, she is entitled to a WB. Those who have earned l943 WB's are: Doris Cooley, Doris Geiclel, Margaret Gumm, Donna Schowalter, and Doris Gonnering. These WB's are much coveted but any girl with a lot of spunk can earn one. The climax of the G. A. A. year came when the classes of Miss Jacobson and Mr. Caldwell combined to give a gym exhibition. hrough a or When the basketball season began, Coach Caldwell had about 25 boys from which to pick a squad. The varsity had a tough I4-game schedule to wade through. With only a few veterans from last year Coach Caldwell molded another powerful de- fensive unit. The boys won only four games, but this doesnit tell the whole story. Even though they never got their shooting up, they made it plenty tough for their opponents to connect. They used a shifting man to man and tight zone defense to hold many of their opponents to low scores. Of the I2 men on the squad, four were seniors and eight were juniors. The four seniors were: Robert Caspari, center or forward, the main offensive cog and good defen- sive man. Francis Murphy, center, a power on re- bounds and an all-round defense man. Aubrey I'Ier- man, guard or forward, a good team player and defense man. Anthony Bell, guard, a good play maker and fast on bringing up the ball. The eight juniors were: Robert Rolfs, center, used his height to good advantageg an accurate shot. Lloyd Kral, guard, very good long shot artist and good on defense. Ralph Klein, forward, short but iffiwli Sched IQ fast: a good eye for the basket. Cy Kluever, guard, swell team player and a hawk on defense. Charley Wagner, forward, fast but small, was a good ball handler. Dave Sauer, guard, excellent playmaker, consistent on offense and defense. Ed German, cen- ter, shifty ball handler and a good team player. Frank Schwab, guard, fast ball handler and a good defensive player. Several firsts were taken by the home team: Salter in the 880-yard run, Murphy in the shot put, l-linsenkamp in the mile, Schalles in the low hurdles, Huber in the pole vault, Schalles in the high jump and Varnes in the broad jump. At the first home meet of the season April I9, the Runkelmen defeated Hart- ford 62 to 5I. West Bend scored five firsts, nine seconds and six thirds. Traveling to Port Washington on May 9, West Bend placed fifth in the regional meet, earning I9 points. Entering the quadrangular meet with Whitefish Bay, Port Washington and Hartford on April 25, West Bend finished third, collecting 33M points. Ray Hinsen- kamp betterecl his own mile record with a 4:50.7 performance. Next the local boys nosed out Hart- ford for second place in a triangular meet held here. Port Washington took first with 81 5X6 points. West Bend collected 58 3f6 and Hartford massed 57 4f6. Hinsenkamp and Becker scored firsts in the mile and 880-yard run. Seconds for West Bend were Hancock the shot, Lemke the mile, Stier the pole vault, Tangney the 440-yard dash, Petri the I00-yard dash, and Varnes the 220-low hurdles and broad jump. iamond DU5 The I942 baseball season was another huge success. The Benders won the south- ern division championship and shared the Little Ten Championship with Waupun which took the prize in the northern divis- ion. The play-off game between the two champs was called off in the third inning because of rain. The success of the team was due to three things: good pitching, excellent bat- ting power, and co-operation between the players and the coach. The pitchers for the Benders were Kirst, Schmidt, and Kral. High batting averages went to H. Gumm 470, H. Kirst 385, l... Kral 363, A. Schmidt 354, R. Caspari 343, Kies 322, and R. l-larth 3I3. All in all the boys played tip-top ball, and Coach Holzhueter should be given much credit for guiding his team to a championship for the second year in a row. During the '43 season the tire situa- tion caused the games to be cut to six inning double-headers thus cutting travel in half. At the same time the number of games played remained the same: eight games were played. Although seriously handicapped from the beginning of the season, because of the shortage of tennis balls, the West Bend tennis team swung into action early in April. After only a few weeks of practice the team began to shape up and Coach Hildebrand had hopes for a successful season. The doubles team composed of Robert Hiller and Robert Jaekel were in top condition. Bud Weinand, last year's Little Ten Conference Singles Champion, was out to repeat his performance of last year. The first meet confirmed the teamis highest hopes. West Bend traveled to Hartford and won by the impressive score of 6-0. Next week the team met a power- ful foe in Mayville, but Mayville was de- feated 3-l. Three days later West Bend suffered a defeat in the Triangular Meet. Beaver Dam placed first with 9, West Bend second with 3 points, and Hartford third with no points. On May 7, West Bend met one of the state's most powerful teams, White- fish Bay and was swamped, 5-0. A week later the team played host to Oconomowoc and lost 4-3. Several members of the team jour- neyed to Manitowoc to participate in the state tennis tournament. Buddy Wei- nand made a fine showing but was de- feated by the player who became state champion. V Y i ot gge 's The i942 golf season was noted for its keen rivalry. All schools in the Little Ten were out for blood. Although West Bend did not take any trophies or champion- ships, the team gave a good account of itself. The pace-setters in the Little Ten were Hartford and Oconomowoc, with Hartford finally winning out in the con- ference meet. The West Bend team com- posed of Bob Rolfs, Bob Kaempfer, George Jansen, Bob Schacht, and Paul German in the order of proficiency, played in a total of seven matches which was climaxed by a trip to the state meet at Lake Geneva. ln the conference meet West Bend placed fifth, and in the state meet ranked thirteenth out of a total of twenty-three teams participating, It was with regret that the team re- ceived the news that golf had to be called off for the duration by the conference officials. Four members from last year's team would have been back with added experience and playing ability. The team is coached by Athletic Director R. T. Grignon. Brisk marches and lively pep songs were rendered at all of these events. The new director, Mr. Freeman, has added much equipment to the band. These items include: four French horns, a baritone sax, thirty-six black metal music stands along with new music. The band worked very industriously in order to enter the music contest held here on May l5. Concerts were given at the band assembly, the physical education demonstration, the Rotary Club, memorial service for Mr. lVlcLane, dedication of the West Bend honor roll, local music festival, and commencement. For the first time during the history of West Bend High School a district music contest was held here on May l5. Seven hundred pupils from twelve cities participated in various events, such as brass, woodwind, and vocal solos or ensembles, chorus, glee club, and bands. A most spectacular parade was witnessed by West Bend when twelve bands, with varied and colorful uniforms, marched with precision and briskness up Main Street. It is lVlr. Freemanis policy to have his members practice as much as possible. He is kept busy every period, since the practice rooms are always occupied throughout the day. He assists his students in the techniques of playing their instruments and gaining a more complete knowledge of music. Upon walking through the third floor corridor on any Wednesday the seventh period, one would note that all doors were wide open. The reason is that our extraordinary a capella choir convenes to prac- tice at that time. It is composed of forty-three juniors and seniors, under the talented direction of Mr. Roy Christensen. Through his untiring efforts and the splendid co-operation of the choristers, the choirs presented unforgettable programs for the patients at the County Home and hospital, Student Assembly, the Womens and lVlen's Clubs at the Methodist Church, the Womanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, commencement, the local music festi- val, and ended the year participating in the music contest. Besides enjoying its work, the choir had fun, too, for at Christmas the thoughtful Kiwanians sponsored a supper and a sleigh ride party for the members. Four members of the choir entered the solo contest at the music contest held May l5. It is agreed that the prominent accomplishment of the year was the Christmas cantata -- The Child Jesus. The soloists were Quintin Schowalter, Calvin Claus, and Carol Mae Hansen. This year the choir centered most of its train- ing singing a capella music. ln this type of music in- dividuals learn to listen to one another so as to produce effective harmony. Because of its splendid music, the choir was invited to sing over WTMJ, the Milwaukee Journal Station, on June 5. Top Row -- D. Merriam, J. Miller, R. Loebe, B. Wolf, C. Hansen Second Row-- O. Debate That last final moment before a player walks out onto the stage and takes up his role as a character is perhaps the most exciting one in the short stage career of a high school student. Every year the technique of presenting a play seems to improve, thus adding to the enjoyment of the audience as well as to the actors and stage hands. ln the first dramatic production of the season, Mr. Olsen directed three one-act comedies on Octo- ber 2 7, 1942, for the purpose of raising some money for the N. F. L. Using casts picked from the juniors and seniors, the group presented: His First Date, The Dummy, and Nobody Home. After this, there was a lull in drama until Tues- day, April l3, when the senior class play, picked by a reading committee, was presented. Directed and staged by Miss Stanfield, The Green Vine, a philosophical comedy, was a decided hit. CAST OF CHARACTERS Cousin George ....... Dan Merriam Myrtle . . . . Harriette Ross Tom . . . . Publishing the yearly Bend is a process which takes much time and accur- ate thinking. The editors attend to the writing and checking of copy, the layout of the dummy, pictures, correct spelling of names. The business staff and advertising staffs must also exercise care and fore- thought in making their finances balance. The advertising manager deposits all the money with the business manager, who also has charge of subscriptions. By being able to enjoy all these func- tions connected with The Bend, we as seniors have fulfilled one of our freshmen dreams. The staff appreciates the fact that it was able to publish the '43 issue of The Bend, even though its size and scope have necessarily been reduced in harmony with present war restrictions. Top -- G. Fortunate, indeed, is the person who finds that his interests and ability are equally useful in war and in peace. Some youth now must make two plans, one for the war years and the other for the time when victory is won. The task of choosing from among the 20,000 occupations one in which he would like to specialize requires a considerable amount of observation of workers at their work. Wartime job quizzes, a vocational book fair, bulletin board displays, motion pictures, uprivilege Day programs devot- ed to problems selected by the students, and assembling up-to-date and authentic printed information, all have played their part in the year's procession of activities. They have been combined to reinforce one another as tools to impart information on which pupils could base intelligent choices regarding vocational, avocational, and social usage problems. Because of the shortage of doctors, nurses, and time, it is necessary that all keep themselves physically and mentally fit. Miss Kuehlthau has also given the girls much valuable information on rationing and how to plan a healthful diet. This year they have learned to deal not only with costs of foods but also with the point system for buying foods. They have learned to substitute common and easily obtained foods for those formerly used. They have learned to know which foods have more vitamins and are better for them. The Home Economics Club this year had as its head Edith Miller. The club did much to help the Red Cross by knitting and making other useful items such as baby clothes and dresses. There was no banquet this year, but instead a substitute program of enter- tainment for the mothers was planned. Many of the girls attended the May Rally on May i5 at Solomon Juneau High School where they learned many new things and had a good time. A. will be playing a most conspicuous role in winning the war, for with- out sufficient food, soldiers or citizens cannot survive. The F. F. A., under the direction of Mr. Holz- hueter, is very independent as far as finances are con- cerned. This spring it sold sl I5 worth of garden seeds in West Bend and the neighboring community. Besides participating in activities pertaining to agriculture, the boys are engaged in such events as oratory, baseball, camping, banquets, and other activ- ities.
