As we review The brief Track hisTory of WesT Bend High, we see ThaT The I934 season represenfs The apex of a rapid rise from an inexperienced, sfruggling Team in I927 To a Team in I934 which reaped every TiTle in iTs paTh on The way To The class B championship of Wisconsin. Coach Jack Runkel carne To WesT Bend five years ago when The seniors of his I934 Team were freshmen. He worked wiTh Them four years as They sfeadily improved: and in I933, when They won The LiTTle Ten TiTle for The firsT Time, The highesf goal seemed To have been reached. BuT when I934 came around, Coach Runkel had a sfill higher goal in mind. Affer winning The Triangular MeeT and successfully defending The LiTTle Ten Cham- pionship, The Red and Whife Track men wenT on To win The sTaTe high school meeT aT Madison. The Team lasT year was parTicularly versafile and well-balanced for a small squad. This sTaTe- menT can be realized besT by nofing ThaT The nine Wesf Bend leTTer-men placed in all buf Two of The ThirTeen evenfs aT The LiTTle Ten meeT. Also, aT The sTaTe meeT, The seven WesT Bend qualifiers succeeded in placing in six differenT evenTs. Thus, in Training one or Two good men for each evenT insTead of Trying To develop a Team specializing in one evenT, Mr. Runkel suc- ceeded in geTTing many poinTs from few men. ln The firsT week of compeTiTion, WesT Bend Took on Cedarburg for a warm-up meeT on The home Track, Taking firsT place in every evenT. A week laTer, WesT Bend chalked up a vicTory. which alone would have made The season a suc- Page Thirfy-four cess, by wresTing The honors from Porf Washing- Ton in The annual Porf-Harfford-Wesf Bend Tri- angular meeT, which Porf has won each year since iTs origin in I929. The Team ran info some sTiff compeTiTion The following week when iT losT To Wayland Acad- emy of Beaver Dam, The only Team To surpass The Red and WhiTe lasT year. Seven WesT Bend men qualified aT Waukesha and aT The same Time gafhered enough poinTs To win This meeT. On May I9, Coach Runkel's squad Traveled To The Ripon College field To defend iTs LiTTle Ten crown acquired The preceding year.
