Fear Ye Mephistophles STRANGER This is my lesson, Learn it, please. Beware the root of evil, Fear Ye Mephistophles! BATAN Curious the life a human leads, 'Tis stiffled with work and all in vain, For no matter how hard he begs or pleads, He will feel the torturous ache of pain. SATAN And you, arrogant sir, A skeptic in defying this, Then see for yourself, this very day Choose any lad or miss. SATAN Average, for sure, For we want no foul play. I will enlighten you, Before the end of day. SATAN First you wonder, then you ponder, and then you suddenly pick. Aha, 'tis a lowly farmer, Who will work till he is sick. SATAN Look at this farmer, His fields have gone dry. His harvest is ruined, His children will die. But sir this is cruel STRANGER Ciould you but offer him food. SATAN I've offered him riches, And this does no good. He vetoed my bargain, He cast me away. He continues working Throughout every day. QTRANGER Yes, he works, And it's honest and good. SATAN Ah, but why, You, see, you have not understood. SATAN For the life that he strives for, Need not be of pain. It could be easy and pleasant. So what makes him refrain? STRANGER Refrain? From what, may I ask? SATAN Oh, 'tis nothing, 'tis trivial, so don't search your brain. Well if you must know, 'tis a bargain, A contract which I offer Again and again. STRANGER This contract you speak of, What are its rules? bATAN You simply get rich, And you need no farmer's tool. STRANGER And for all these great riches, What do you need? SATAN Nothing much really, 'tis only a deed. STRANGER A deed, In exchange for riches and fame. I think I would choose, To partake in this game. SATAN Oh, say no more, My curious friend Enscribe your name here, And your troubles will end. QTRANGER There, my name is signed. SATAN Yes, it is done. You are mine forever, Again, I have won. STRANGER Ha, What have you won? I am rich, and you get a deed. Ha, Ha, I'm afraid my dear friend, I must wish you God Speed . SATAN Don't say that word, It strikes like a pain, Pick up the deed And read it again. SATAN It says, I give you these riches. But not without toll. For in return, You give me your soul.
