INDSTROM listened and smiled inwardly while the old chief spoke to the men who had come ashore from the schooner. Lindstrom was happy. At last he could leave this cursed south Pacific island with his precious pearls. He did not say anything when Luana told how he had been washed ashore after his ship had been wrecked. He grinned when the old man told how he had be- haved when he heard about the giant pearls, how he had forced his will upon the natives and made them dive into the warm waters of the lagoon only to die from the sharks and unbearable pres- sure. Lindstrom smirked. The natives thought he was a god, and so he pre- tended to be one. For a year he had played the part of a madman and he took their food and pearls. Crazy, the ol' man's crazy, not me.', The men from the schooner stared at him with his wild red beard and the little canvas bag hanging around his neck. Lindstrom moved about uneasily. Surely they wouldn't believe the old man. He was as sane as any of them. And, yet, he saw how they moved, how they were spreading out. No, No! Don't believe them l It was useless to fight. He was down. This couldn't be true, it couldn't be hap- pening! There was a fortune in pearls around his neck. They couldn't really think he was crazy. They would send him home to a crazy house. Graz Mlm Pearls Wait, listen to me! he pleaded. I can prove I'm not crazy. There was really no way to prove it, but he was stalling for time to think, to find a way out .... the pearls!! He fumbled with the sack at his neck. Please, everything the old man said is true, but I was only acting. You don't have to take me home in irons. I'll give you a fortune. I've got pearls. You won't be sorry! Lindstrom trembled. You see, he is mad, said Luana. Lindstrom tried to struggle, but it was hopeless. They put him in chains, carried him bodily to the rowboat and rowed out to the waiting schooner. Later on there would be a cell in an asylum. Luana could smile at the thought of that. He stood on the beach, watching the schooner moving out of the lagoon with Lindstrom and the natives who would testify against him. From the sand Luana picked up the canvas bag which Lindstrom had dropped. Slowly Luana poured the contents of the sack into his hand. There were still some smooth round pebbles inside, the same pebbles he had placed there the night Lindstrom slept so fast. He turned toward the lagoon and smiled. Yes, it was just and right that it should end this way. Mario Convenuto Grade 10
