What's So MY0 TA ' Janis looked at the circle of waiting faces, faces that in a few moments could register either acceptance or scorn. It was up to her. She could picture the thrill, the fun of being accepted by this crowd. the crowd that ran Ehindale High. If she took the cigarette being of- fered her, she would be a part at last. Janis knew only too well what it would be like to be out in the cold again, for only recently had the door of popu- larity opened to her. Suddenly. it seemed to be shutting again. She looked at Joan Ellis-smug. pretty, and very superior. How she wanted a friend like Joan Ellis. They could have so much fun together. Her eyes rested on Pete Williams who grinned easily at her. Come on! his laughable eyes seemed to say. Maybe if she took it-Pete would ask her for a date, and .loan would become her best friend. Then the picture changed. Her lov- ing, laughing, mother and father were smiling at her. She remembered their words earlier that day. We'll always trust you, honey. You'll never fail us. we know. All this passed through her mind in an instant. No, thank you, I don't care for one. Her voice was very clear and calm. Joan's mouth twisted smugly, and Pete just took his interest away from Janis. She could no longer see the lights of the Candy shop , the gathering place of the crowd. Janis rose swiftly and hur- ried out-a small blond girl in a brown tweed coat. Her hurrying footsteps seemed to say, What's so important? What's so im- portant ? And her heart seemed to answer back and say, Your own self-respect and that of those you love. The last strips cgf sunlight shade worPdly objects with their amber hue giving a heavenly cast to all. The birds in the twilight sing a lullaby of night while, as a moccasined lndian, night creeps down upon the earth. Sunset is dissolved in the mist of night. Marsha Maleshko 9th grade UA The trim craft was bob- bing idly next to the dock. lts clean white paint shone in the sun, and little ripples lapped against the hull. As I stepped aboard, she felt good under me and seemed eager to get under way, like a race horse at the starting gate. When I unfurled the sails, they opened up like the wings of a startled gull. How good it feels to know the wind is doing your work for you, filling the sails, sending you cutting through the deep green water and out into the open sea! Bruce Kinsel 9th grade
