Bw no, Jo no shut the covers too quickly • Lessons are over now! As in the theme of this book we have attempted, half - seriously , half-jocularly, to portray, in a modern ' s lan- gua%e, through a modern ' s eye, some of the women who have made history; —$o, Aere, within these pages we have hoped to enshrine some of the scenes, the peo¬ ple, the happenings, and some of the memories which have made Wesleyan—for you . Herein you will find recorded a year ' s life at The Old¬ est and Best —a record, the real substance of which is as old and as beautiful as The Princess within her tur- reted mansions of learning — and, yet, as new and as modern as the class that is graduated in this year of ■ hundred-and-thirty , It o ntents •f ' ' Cr - ' 9) (Eljajitpr ©nr • ®I|? To one who has played so great a part in making college home” for us. To one who, by twenty-five years of service to Wesleyan, has created for herself an endeared place in the life of the college, and a lasting shrine in the hearts of the girls who have come under her influence . irs. Florrie Q. White T o we, the members of the staff, with lore and appreciation, dedicate this rolume of the VETERROPT. . That if the folks of modern nations From past events make applications, They’ll profit by the grave mistakes That everyone in history makes; They’ll also find some inspiration From those who win their approbation. Intimate sketches we’ll give you here Of famous women as they appear To the college girl, the girl of today, Who looks at things in a different way. History, all students know, Repeats itself. This book will show Hours of flfeauty Knowledge hath her temple here ,— With radiance that charms the eye Upon its marble columns fall The constant-changing rainbow hues of beauty — The flaming blush that paints the Salt With rose , their snowy whiteness dyes The dazzling , splendid light of moon Illumines them , stately and sublime In beauty . The Western majesty of light That stains the twilight Vesper hour Upon them dwells—benediction for Their beauty. ‘Between their polished purity The purple dusk is loft in night; ad crescent moon, a single star, Shines down upon them, loSl in dreams Of beauty. •2V ICHT SCENE SOPHOMORE HALL X i iraM QYMNAS1UM campus TATE HALL THE PHARM ” Moonlight r Aimuuistratum VETERROPT Dr. W. It must have been raining as she reached the Mall, And our Highness was dressed like a glad rag doll . Along came Walter in his best bib and tucker . Aha!” said Elizabeth, Here comes the sucker ” She spoke to Walter, and all in a muddle, He took off his coat and covered the puddle . Now perhaps you 9 re wondering the secret of this — Queen Liz herself, was the first Feminist . She organized this, and she organized that; She organized the cooks, and she organized the cat . The sea wind blew bold and free, like a wild, gladsome thing, across the narrow strip of green, hill-dappled Ixmg Island which tapers in where the waters of ocean and sound meet. The sky was vivid blue, the ocean a dark, deep indigo, full of power and eternal mystery. On the distant horizon of the east dusty, yellow clouds hovered, half hidden by the waves which rose and fell with ceaseless monotone, each one a higher, more greedy, grasping thing than the one before. In the Casino the party there knew nothing of the wild, brilliant beauty of the world without. The room was grey with cigarette smoke; and the fumes of liquors hung heavy over everything. The shrill, hysterical voices of the women, their high, metallic laughter beat against the guttural, incoherent talk of the men. There was an abandon, a feverish revelry, a coarse gaiety about the scene which comes with whiskey.—Then of a sudden there was quiet—the tense hush that stifles one before a storm strikes. And the wind outside the Casino seemed to die out with a sound that was like a sob. Helen Kilpatrick. Our Love Our love was like a night-flower — fVondrous full and sweet And glistening fair To he so short-lived — Like a night-flower, too. It shriveled and faded When night was gone. But still—throughout the day. Haunting me still, Faint perfume lingers on. Hy Winnifred Jones. And After Sunset—The Dark Jerome Crosby drove out into the open road—alone in the cart. He looked back only once. The sky was a misty purple streaked with rose, and the cabin against the sky was black—severely outlined. There was a light in one window. For a long min¬ ute Jerome gazed at that light—it was Jem’s room. He gripped the back of the cart with his huge hand; the knuckles showed white. Quickly the day faded, but even more rapidly something vital died in the soul of Jerome Crosby. There was a dull, dead stare in the vacant eyes he turned toward the railroad station ahead of him. He lashed the horse with all his strength; the startled horse jumped, and the man in the cart lashed again and again—and laughed. Elizabeth McMahon. Love is a happy fountain. Leaping upward to the sun. Shimmering with prismie lights. Tinkling soft a note of joy, It glitters in the light — A moment thus—then ripples sloiv Into a tranquil pool With rainbow memries in its depths. liy E. Wilde. 135 Qtljkttrfi Slnatt Starts Something Now everyone knows That the modern girl ' s clothes Are of new innovations a part; But what they don ' t know We 9 ll endeavor to show — And that is, who gave this a start. This young girl demure, We are practically sure. Had a complex ahead of her time, And startled all France By donning some pants And displaying her figure sublime. Now girls of today.
