ri Copyright 1929 BY HELEN LOWE Editor ELEANOR ROYAL Business Manager 1929 PUBLISHED - BY - THE SENIOR - CLASS - OF WESLEYAN - COLLEGE MACON GEORGIA •h: FOREWORDS H EREIN do you behold the last re¬ corded years of the Class of ’29, first¬ born of Wesleyan the New. Out from her arched colonial doors we go, and the fragile swinging lanterns throw their light before our feet, like the love and care of Alma Mater. In our hearts we bear the peace, the hope, the confidence that fellowship within her walls has brought us. To this book there is a secret clasp, which, pressed in later years, will call before our eyes the ghosts of pages, too many and too dear for print, leaves clear or blurred, that these two covers bind—which we alone may see. Herein you may behold some of the bright¬ er scenes selected from innumerable charming pictures of these days. ■■ I - «®C CONTENTS Book I . . . The College Book II... The Classes Book III ... . Conservatory 1 DEDICATION To show that Wesleyan has not forgotten and can never forget one who has for twenty-two years faithfully and unassum¬ ingly “carried on” in work which she has made the chief interest of her heart, we, the members of the staff, dedicate the twenty-second volume of the Veterropt to Miss Hanks Armand In her is one who has truly given herself to the service of others, accomplishing more than many have ever dreamed. And in her is one of our dearest and sin- cerest friends. Rivoli O Rivoli, thy birth was as the birth Of all things beautiful and glorious, As fair as A phrodite ' s from the foam. As full of glory as the shining sun . I shall remember thee as crystallized From dreams of great, far-seeing minds who loved To see man ' s daughters seek the ways of God, And longed to realize their eager dreams Of marble halls . O Rivoli, when they and I are dust. Thou shalt go on, enduring far beyond The crumbling of each marble colonnade — For fires that never die, flame on thy hearths . To thee in all thy grandeur youth may come Through thee, in all its beauty, youth may move. And leave thee with thy fire in its soul To lighten other hearths with all that best In life to know . Lillian Shearolse, ’29 VL o WESLEYAN COLLEGE .HE beginning of a second century is at hand for Wesleyan College. Like a queen new-robed in vest- merits which were long only dream fabrics, but arc now tangible and gleaming, Greater Wesleyan stands and faces the promising years. No less the heart of Macon because of its situation out¬ side the limits of the city, Wesleyan College is still Macon’s pride. Leaving the Conservatory of Music which is increas¬ ing rapidly in itself, to keep life in the historic buildings on the old site, the spirit of Wesleyan has moved to its present location to expand into a beautiful estate of 170 acres, seven miles from Macon on the Dixie Highway. It is the present president, Dr. W. F. Q’uillian, who has led the company of far-sighted and beneficent supporters of Wesleyan progress. At the time of his accepting the posi¬ tion of president nothing definite had been done to bring about the Greater Wesleyan. With no sign of funds, but a tremendous amount of faith, Dr. Quillian led the campaign which made the recent plant a reality. Many examples of self-sacrifice and generosity have been shown in the campaign for two million dollars which resulted in the erection of twelve colonially designed build¬ ings in red brick and Georgia marble—symbols of the lead¬ ing Southern college which Wesleyan is predicted to be¬ come in the future. It is of harmonizing red brick trimmed in white wood and stone. Of rather austere lines, it lacks none of the exquisite symmetry characteristic of the entire group of new buildings. The swimming pool unit forms one complete wing of the building, connected only by a short stairway. The main building includes two athletic doors, dressing rooms, showers, lockers and offices. The pool unit has its own showers, locker rooms, as well as drying rooms for suits. Arched columns frame the entrance to the pool, and a walk of white and green tile extends around it. Seats for spectators occupy one side and end, great arched windows the opposite side, and an elevated diving platform the opposite end. The pool proper is of green and white tile. Green lines are blocked five feet apart, run¬ ning lengthwise as guides in swimming. The depth of the water graduates from three feet to six inches in the shallow end, to eight feet, six inches in the deepest part. Swimming in the new pool is only one of the many athletic features at the new college. Sports include basketball, tennis, base¬ ball, archery, horseback riding, and hiking. An elective course in eurythmics is offered to Juniors and Seniors. 146 WtWUvVi% VU VCi Vu Clifford Clark, Tennis Champion, ’28 147 vVivvmwvivxniv ' .wv ' r ferazHTc 1, y sai fUWi ' WtTivNVI ' vWtWV Ivv VARSITY PLAYERS Clifford Clark Ends her collegiate basketball career this year, hav¬ ing played four consecutive seasons on her respec¬ tive class teams. She has also been a varsity soccer player during the past two years, winner of tennis championship in ’28, and possessor of an examiners badge in life saving. Cliff has done outstanding work in all athletics at Wesleyan. Margaret Lawrence Came to Wesleyan this fall and led a team of fast, sporty little Freshmen to the basketball champion¬ ship. Her excellent playing in the center won a varsity place for her. Nell Trowbridge 1 his is Nell’s second year on the varsity team. This plucky little guard gives promise of a four-year’s varsity record. Nell is an all-round athlete. XWtWCv V%i MU Vl rii I eMl :-g 2= VARSITY PLAYERS Virginia Townsend Virginia was her captain’s right-hand man. She played a quick, accurate running center for the Freshmen during the first of the series of games. Later she was switched to a forward position and showed herself equally capable in that position. Helen Hall I he frosh fast guard, shows promise as a well- rounded athlete for Wesleyan. She also brings a famous high school record with her. Blanch Duvall Little Blanch proved to be the highest score-gainer for the Freshman team. She had an excellent high school career behind her, and although she is small, she managed to out-twist her opposing guard. 149 Frosh Win Cage Diadem Defeat Seniors in Final Game of Present Season Miss Grote Presents Cup IIy Agnes Kelley C WK FRESHMAN SIX stepped to the basketball championship of Wesleyan College last night when they easily defeated the Senior squad with a score of 26-12. At the close of the game Miss Ernestine Grote, head of the phys¬ ical education department, presented to their captain, Margaret Lawrence, of Sa¬ vannah, the athletic trophy which has been in the hands of the Seniors for the past year. This was the first game in which the Seniors had met defeat. Although the frosh lost out in their first game on Thanksgiving day, they retaliated when they won over the Juniors and Sophomores last week. The frosh team as a whole has put up superior pass work and team co-operation during the entire season. From the standpoint of basketball technique they were due the basketball championship. Centers Star The high spot of the game was the work of the Freshman centers, Lawrence and Hall. They managed to keep the ball in the Freshman territory the major part of the game. But see, my veil is rosy-lined! No nun am I, with fear imbued — A harem maid of wistful grace. Shy-veiled before my master s face. Scarfs like mine are airy things That make one know the joy of wings! Soft-furled, my wings upon me lay — Aurora s robe, who lights the day — The royal mantle falls aside.
