Her stately towers through the years Have stood lil(c sentinels tall , That guard the sacred memories Within this loved old wall. FORD WORD Now rve her daughters last to go Out from her loving care , W ould fain enshrine in memory. The scenes so dear , so fair. Her trodden paths , her stately steps , Her walls that heard our heart, W ill live forever , golden shrined. Though all the world may part. dedication TO OLD WESLEYAN About whose graying walls the shades and shadows of almost a century have woven a treasured tapestry of memories — whose towers pointing ever heavenward have lifted the souls of her daughters to the heights — whose halls have cradled their joys, their sorrows and their ambitions — whose faculty like the magi of old have taught them to fol- low the star — to thee, glorious Old Wes- leyan, standing at the golden end of a rain- bow path of dreams we, with reverence, honor, and deepest love dedicate this the twenty-first volume of the VETERROPT CONTENTS Memory I THE COLLEGE Memory II THE CLASSES Memory III CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC AND FINE ARTS Memory IV ACTIVITIES Memory V ATHLETICS Memory VI THE BELLES Board of Trustees Bishop W. THE COLLEGE Shaded lanes unchanged by time Each April kissed by roses ' blush , Red walls entwined by loving vine, Gay serenade by lark and thrush. Gray toivers ' gainst the evening glow. Fair castle spires of learning ' s land Soft memories — gay dreams and love Combined in our old Wesleyan. THE CLASSES Down twining stairs, through joy-touched hall, They come — these maidens great and small. For ninety years, untouched by time To answer to the Wesleyan chime Each seeking, striving, loyal lasses Their eyes with fairy gleams aglow , ' Through countless ages may they go The memory of Wesleyan classes. They are but prison walla, these mountain peaks, Shutting the sea breath out. Oh. for a sight Of level beach, and wind-swept dunes, and W .« cS Thund ' rlng to breakers, foaming high and white! Men call them beautiful. To me the sea Is more than that; the hills ' fresh waterfalls Can be described, bet words to paint the waves Die on the lips. These hills are prison walls! When In the morning hours, sleep comes to tin . I dream of other nights, where salt winds blew Into my windows; where the distant surf Lulled in Its wild, sweet chant the whole night through. How deep that sleep! — I dream and see white sails; Breathe again; the gull, the white-cap calls! Ami then the windlass melts within my hands Morning. Dry nlr that stifles. Prison-walls. LILLIAN 8HEAROU8E. I AM TOO SAFE I am too safe In my shuttered house Laxy by the fire And dozing — Oh to be young And laughing As the north wind laughs Out In the youthful cold. DOROTHY Me KAY. lil.INDKD Blinded! ’an It be that I Have tried too hard to see. Have gazed too long at brilliant, setting suns. Have faced too strong a light? The visions w hich I followed once I see no more. I grope In blindness now at Beauty ' s door. There was a beauty once In simple things for me. But somewhere, deep within my worldly self, I ' ve dost d the door. ' TIs night. MARGARET CHAPMAN. MARVIN MEADORS, DORSET RADER The Company Store did not boast a porch. The roof of the stoop covered soft. cool, red dirt mixed with sand. That was simply an added advantage. One could get so much better “stand to lean one ' s chair back against the wall in the shade than If the floor had been wood, with pestering knot holes In It. Clinton Blssel ran the store. He got up ami moved his split -bottomed chair from one side of the door-step to the other, having dug up the ground where he was. settled himself anew, took out a frngrant plug of tobncco, bit off a generous wad. and heaved a sigh of content- ment. But the sigh was cut short by the ap- pearance of Millard Cllppard around the corner of the store. .... It was very annoying for Millard to come Just at this moment, for Clint never liked con- versation right on top of a fresh chew but conversation It must be If Millard be the visitor, lie spat vehemently In the soft earth. • Mornln . Millard. Set down. “Thank ye. Clint. The newcomer drew up a chair and arranged himself In It to his entire satisfaction. • • • • • Staccato hoof beats cut through the cloud of yellow dust swiftly approaching over the parched hill, and in an astonishingly short time a paint less, but well repaired buggy drew up before the Comp ' ny Store. The small, homely. Jovlul little man on the seat in faded blue over- alls and moth-eaten hat. drove his trap like a Roman emperor, If Emperor did ever drive his own one-horse buggy. His colorless shirt showed a dark bright blue only along the edge of his suspenders where It was protected from the hot sun. Ills comfortable looking shoes had only about one other point In their favor: they could still be recognized ns shoes. All In all. the little man gave the appearance of having seen much and hard wear. Even the old briar pipe, clamped between his false teeth, looked as If It had spent many seasons In the same corner of the large, happy mouth of Its owner. But his horse was perfect! From the snowy satin of her four slender white sox, to her dainty brown ears, from her luxuriant, chocolate colored tall to her sensitive pinky-black nose, not one single flaw could be detected either In the- build of t he sorrel, her markings, or her grooming. The sunlight played about her sleek rounded sides and glanced on her flowing mnne. With her head held high, she stood motionless, poised on her four superbly spindly legs, ns her master threw his reins over the whip holster and jumped across the wheel crooning. Whoa. Dixie, as he passed Into the shade of the vil- lage store. Good mornln . neighbors! he called cor- dially. as he paused on the threshold. CARROLL BOYD. TONY (From short story “Cops ) Look at lm there, Policeman Dennison whispered to his wife. “Ye ' d never believe ho was such a little criminal — that Tony Hunter, with him settln there and the smile of lm like that of a little angel. “And hH mother don ' t know the truth of lm? Mrs. Dennison whispered back. Her hus- band shook his head. But the boy? his wife persisted, watching the child across the aisle. “Juvenile Court ami the reformatory. I ex- pect. and again Dennison shook his head. “Dot s he go to school ? “Yep — his mu was a school teacher before she married Hunter. The kid does nil his devilment after school hours. During the course of the sermon Tony was forgotten and it was a week later before he eroded Dennison’s path again. Those hoys on your beat are getting to he regular rogues, Dennison, the chief of police tapped his pencil on his desk and looked at tlie policeman. • • • • • Yes. sir. Dennison turned toward the door In time to see the object of their conversation g down the street. Following closely, but so as not to seem to be trailing, he went down the street. Tony dropped down beside the trash can and whistled a queer whirring whistle. In a few minutes Eddie and Jake appeared. They looked at Tony’s flushed face and sat down on the curb. “Cops after ye?” Jake lighted a cigarette. Tony shook Ills head. “Got an Idea.” he Informed them. A swell one, too! A shadow fell across the lid of the trash can. “There’s a big crack In the oast window of Jackson’s Jewelry store — Th • other boys gasped. Well, why not?” Tony tilted his roguish fare to one side and regarded them coolly. “Willin’ to try? They ' ll be a chase from the cops 1,1 Three small heads came closer together and when they looked up from their planning there was not a soul In sight— not even a shadow- on top of the trash can.
