T t ° fj j j I 9 x 1 rv P5 COPYRIGHT, 1924 AlLBNE CoRRY, Editor Grace Woodward, Business Manager “The moving hand write , and, having writ, moves on.“ How true that is, and how sad it would be if that hand did not leave a glorious story of joys experienced, tasks accomplished and hopes fulfilled indelibly printed on the pages of the heart. But time does much to dim the bright past; and to to prevent the loss of a single precious memory of our college days, we have tried to record those things which would best express that intangible some- thing known as “Wesleyan spirit ’ in the pages of this book. It is our sincere wish that not only will the Veterropt be a joy today, but that in some distant time it may prove the key to unlock the door to the magic land of memory and will carry you back to the happy days when you were a Wesleyan girl. A MESSAGE WILLIAM F. QUILLIAN, D.D. Wesleyan. There is music in the name! For nearly one hundred years the brave old college has been the champion of womanhood, the exponent of her highest ideals and her holiest aspirations. Today Wesleyan is recognized as the pioneer chartered college for women in all the world, an institution of the highest educational standards and the loftiest Christian principles. The hour has struck! The mother college calls to her daugh- ters and to the friends of Christian education! Let us arise and build! No one person can do this great work. It will require sacrifice and heroic service on the part of all who love the young womanhood of our Southland. The daughters of Wesleyan are worthy of our best effort, our highest endeavor. What do you say? VETERROPT STAFF Ailene Corry, EJilor-in-Chief Grace Woodward. Business Manager Assistants Margaret Richards Margaret Cutter Julia Pryor Mary Wilkerson Ellen Hunt Helen Kilpatrick Caroune Fulghum Madge Jenkins Mildred McCrory Eunice Thomson Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!” — Shakespeare. Alma Mater Hail, Wesleyan, thou emblem of all that is grand. The noblest, the greatest in all our fair land ; Thine ideals are honored, thy name always blest ; A fountain of knowledge, the oldest and best. A star in the dark is thy glorious past. Forever and ever thy glory shall last. Upholding thine ideals, thy daughters will be True, faithful and loyal, dear Wesleyan, to thee. Page nineteen THE VETERROPT Board of Trustees Hon, N. E. The trees at Rivoli, tall and beautiful, with fresh green leaves of spring, gay bushes of wild flowers and tiny blue violets all announcing that spring had come, were enough to thrill the heart of an artist. As I looked at the stately pine which guards the entrance to the wood with its huge yet graceful outline silhouetted against the flaming sky, I felt that the poet had spoken truly when he said : “I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree.” Suddenly a feeling of inexpressible mysticism came over me. The familiar woods of Rivoli seemed transformed into a magic wood. An atmosphere of worship descended on the forest. A heavenly glow which brought with it all the glory of the sunset sifted through the leaves, the trees bowed low as if in reverence, the boughs sang a weird soft song and the pervading odor of honeysuckle seemed wafted on the air as if it were incense burned in worship of the Almighty. Truly I had witnessed an inspiring sight. This was the Vesper service of the woods. Ailexe Corry, ’24. Undoubtedly, if an English teacher had asked you to describe Wesleyan at that moment your memories would have been confined to a tower, grim and forbidding looking, and steps, numberless and steep. By the time you went home Christmas you could turn at the corner and remember the loveliest things about that campus. There was the Y. W. prom party, all lanterns and evening dresses and chatter; the Hallowe’en sing on the chapel steps and the rush to the pharm after the wonderful games on Thanksgiving. You remembered the twilights on the porch, studying on the lawn in the morning and strolling up and down the walk in the afternoon. Oh! they were glorious memories — but weren’t you glad you were going home? The last of May you were leaving for the year. The campus was spotted with girls in bright-colored spring clothes. There were the roses and ferns and even the trees were dressed new for graduation week. The steps looked short and friendly, the tower beamed with a motherly look, there was a choked feeling in your throat and ‘alone-ness’ in your heart. Why you were really leaving dear old Wesleyan. You hadn’t realized it before! Sara L. Jenkins, ’26. Page one hundred twelve Page one hundred hit lee n Varsity Team Winners of IV and Siveaters Louise Stubbs “Peaches” is undoubtedly one of the best running centers that ever played on a Wesleyan court. Always in the midst of the thickest fighting, always ready for the tip-off, always quick to make a brilliant pass — well, “Peaches” is always a peach of a basketball player. Mary Thomas Maxwell Tommie, who is the best all-round Senior, is quite naturally one of the star basket- ball players. Armed with the motto: “They shall not pass,” the valiant little guard put her best into the game, hence the Senior victory. Mamie Harmon Mamie shoots ’em from far corners and from underneath the goal, but usually she shoots them right through the hoops. It is in a large measure due to her uncanny goal shooting, as they say in the sporting journals, that the championship remains in the class of Lavender and White. Page one hundred fourteen Varsity Team Winners of “W and Sweaters Mary Michaux Michaux, the gallant little Freshman forward, proved herself a plucky fighter. Her quickness and aim at the basket will well bear watching by the teams which are to follow. Ruby Tanner The outstanding feature of Ruby’s playing was her splendid team work. The ease and agility with which she covered the Hoor, her quick passes and her ncver-say-die spirit accounts for her captaincy of the Junior team. Elizabeth Winn Winn, guard for the Juniors, was a veritable stone wall, which yielded little before the Senior onslaught. Her steadiness and quickness won for her a coveted place on the varsity. Beloved the fragile blossoms were to him, And oft, between the dawn and twilight hours, 1 saw him with his old hands, strong and white, A splendid lily’s pallid cheek caress, Or pause and contemplate with high delight Some tiny violet’s quaint daintiness. “If they should die, I’d die too, I’m afraid. God keep my flowers for my sake,” he prayed. Then suddenly up came her head, Straight up in bed she sat, And frantically yelled to her scurrying mates: “Say, what bell was that?” “Last one,” was the very consoling reply, My, how that lass did hop! She rushed down the stairs four steps at a time, But at the dining room door she stopped. But, oh, how cruel fate can be! She had hurried with all her might, To reach the table in six minutes, And the very food was in sight. When, suddenly, filled with the deepest dismay, On meeting this awful fate, The bleak, brown door was shut in her face, Said a voice from within, “Too late!” Slowly back to her room she went, And mournfully spent her time Learning a five-hour “Anglo” lesson, Between eight forty-five and nine. Nine o’clock came all too soon, She must be resigned to her lot; She could look wise like the proverbial owl, But decline Cireek nouns she could not. Relieved a bit from her haunting fears 1 his was Or. (ireene’s lecture day She allowed herself to enjoy her dreams, And her thoughts were far away. Page one hundred eighty-eight But suddenly all of her rosy dreams Had turned to the deepest black, F ' rom away in the distance she heard these words: “That’s a very significant fact.” Too late to improve this golden hour, She must hurry along to the next. Starfish, school teachers, and oyster beds, “Bug” Quillian took as his text. Of course, her story had not been written, She had set aside chapel for that, But keen, black eyes were watching her, So as straight as a saint she sat. “I didn’t have time” is a worn-out phrase, An excuse each man claims as his, But this time it received the provoking retort, “You have all the time there is.” All through the bright spring afternoon, She manfully did her best To put in H 2 S 0 4 And get out H 2 S. The “perfect day” at last was o’er; In the rays of the sinking sun, A sigh of relief escaped her lips, But — the elevator refused to run. Wearily up five flights of stairs, Which seemed to have no end, She struggled and, after several ages, She reached the topmost bend. And now let us leave this dear Wesley- Anne, And let her heart strings feast On peaceful slumber and dreams of “John,” And, say, “May she rest in peace.” H. K., ’24.
