n WIMTWOKrU MILITABY AOAXMUfr. Prizes and Scholarships. Several gold medals are offered each year for excel- lenojr in aoholarship and in the militaiy drill, and lor punctuality and deportment. Washington and Lee UnivenHtj, of Virginia, and Central University, of Kentucky, have each offered a scholarship of free tuition for one session to that member of our graduating olasa who shall attain the highest rank in scholarship and deportment during the year of his graduation. The pecuniary value of this prize, should the winner attend either of those in s tlt tt t i o ns , is about |75. Graduation. Whoever completes satisfactorily anv one of the courses of study, and who v deportment ha i l een good (luring his connection with the school, will receive a diploma. Those whose proficiency will warrant it may receive from the Superintendent a letter recommending that they be received by any college or university to which they may apply, vdthout further examination upon the branches embraced in the course whieh they have taken. Recognition by Higher Institutions. So successful have we been in preparing students for colleorcg and universities, that several prominent institu- tions have agreed to receive our students without examin- ing them in the studies Ihey havi ' lakt n with us. Tbe diUl is fine physical exercise, especially for boys who are in the plastic state. Bent forms may be straightened, hollow chests may be developed, an erect carriage and a manly address may be acquired, and health promoted. 5th. l e princii of self-government is thoroughly brought out. Officers are selected from among the old- eiat, the most studious, and the most trustworthy of the cadets, and thes6 ara of much svrvioe to the teachers in the management of the school and in controlling the pub- lic sentiment of the students. While the milit ary feature was introduced primarily for the advantages just mentioned, every effort is made, consistent with other duties, to bring it to the highest de- gree of perfection as regards proficiency in all the details of the system, thst every cadet may have a feeling of pride in bis work. As evidence that this has been in some measure socomplished, it is worthy of mention thst invitations sent to the various military schools in the State to compete with us, were with one accord declined.
