THE CRIMSON AND GRAY 8 i A77 id--, , THE WOOING OF AN INDIAN MAID RED ROBIN Ruth Rockwood 3 8 Wrnona a young Indran mard of snxteen and Matosopa an Indran brave of erghteen belonged to the some trrbe They saw each other every day but they never spoke to each other for that wasn t the proper thrng to do On summe'r evenrngs the trrbe held dances wrthrn the crrcle of the tepees The young men walked around the dancers each playrng a flute and dressed rn hrs frnest robe At the end of every song he gave hrs yodel lrke love call to whrch the grrls answered wrth therr musrcal srng song laughter Matosopa had loved Wrnona srnce the trme he had frrst rorned the trrbe three years ago But he had not had much opportunrty to speak untrl on such a nrght after the dances were over There was no out srde frre but a drm lrght from wrthrn the skrn tepees shed a mellow glow over the sleeprng camp Matosopa walked qurckly and auretly to the tepees of Wrnona s father He entered srlently wake Wrnona wrth proper apologres Then he whrspered ta her of hrs love for her She remarned srlent as was proper so he drdn t know whether he was favorably recerved or not upon hrs frrst vrsrt Then for a whole year he gave presents of food and skrns to her krnsfolk meanwhrle tellrng Wrnona of hrs love for her At the next Mrdsummer the parents on both srdes were made acquarnted wrth the betrothal Suddenly the young couple drsappeared They went out rnto the wrlderness together and spent a few days away from camp Thrs was therr honeymoon In due trme they quretly returned he to hrs home and she to hers Now at last the marrrage was announced and rnvrtatrons were grven to the least LAUGI-IING VVATER Myrtle Polley 4l Laughrng Water was a beautrful Indran marden who worked wrth the squows rn the frelds It was mrd summ r and Lauahrng Water stood under one of the rough shelters that had been burlt among the patches the crox s xxhrch threatened to e t up the cart A blazrna sun frlled the frelcls wrth warmth and lrght The worm mell of the summer earth was n her nos trrls the drone of rnsects was everywhere I-low tumbled her thoughts had become Fleetrng pr tures strayed t' rough her memory Wien the young oak le ves were the of mouse s ear he had beaun tt plant corn rn lrttle holes whrch she had dug wrth a shsrpened stack She re membered how the warm sun and the frequent show ers of late Aprrl had brought the young plants sprrng rng from the sorl Her mrnd leaped to the harvest of the year before She was takrng the ears of corn from the stalks Other mardens and squaws w re car ryrng them to the lodges where they were shelled and the grarn put rnto large baskets Soon the braves would go on the autumn hunt Turkeys partrrdges pheasants and deer vrere feedrng rn the forests The braves would go out and krll them Vv'hat a bountr ful feast they had had that autumn Turkeys pota toes corn beans corn cakes and pumpkrns The dream faded a harsh vorce was rn her ears she was berng shaken roughly Up' Lazy one' The crows eat our corn Out' and drrve them away or you ll get no green corn when we feast next month Frrghtened Laughrng Water ran hurlrng strcks and stones varnly after the crows as the huge ungarnly bodres rose from the frelds flapprng therr wrngs Marre LeBoeuf 39 On New Years Day when the famrly rs gathered rn the large comfortable krtchen of the farm my grandfather tells thrs story of hrs great great grand father Late rn Aprrl of l632 a shrp load of explorers sent by the 'srng of France landed on the shores of Amerrca The expedrtron was rn charge of the Duke of Normandy who was accompanred by hrs young and charmrng wrfe and therr seven year old son They sarled up the Sarnt Laurence Rrver on a beau trful cloudless day early rn the sprrng when every tree brush and shrub along the rrver bank showed rts frrst pale green of folrage These people had been cooped up on the boat for erght months ever srnce the pre cedrng September and wrth great roy and rntense excrtement they made plans to land In the roy of berng on land they penetrated deeper rnto the woods than they realrzed A band of mar audrng Indrans spred them leapt upon the unsuspect rng handful of whrte people and massacred them all but the son of the Duke of Normandy who was taken home as a trophy The Duke of Normandys son became Red Robrn I-le lrved rw the old chref s wrgwam and was soon a welcomed leader among the boys of the trrbe He had rnherrted a natural grace and skrll from hrs French forefathers and he developed strength abrlrty and prowess to make hrmself a frt herr for the chreftarn of the band whom he began to love But he could not forget hrs own father When Red Robrn had lrved for eleven years wrth the Indrans the trrbe was askecl by the French courrer des bars rf they would ard them to get furs The Frenchmen recognrzed the boy as a French boy and asked hrm auestrons The lad told them the few thrngs he remembered abcut hrs people The French men pranned to tale hrm back to the French settle ment at N ntreal provrded they could escape xrrthout berng cauaht by the old chref who now loved Red Rob rn as hrs ovrn son After a breath takrng escape Red Robrn at last could ev r remember Lours Leduc rn memory of hrs father One New Year s Day about twenty years after hrs escape a Lours ana hrs 'Iam ly were celebratrng the fecst they heard pour' lrng at therr door Lours threw t open cna faced the chref hrs foster f ther now very olr' toacther wrth three of hrs braves men who as boys had been partrcul'rr chums of Lours Lours expected them to krll hrm I-I fell on hrs knees to bcg for mercy I-le rose tremblrng as they sard they meant h m no harm They had only come because the old chref wrshed to see hrm before he dred That rs the story of my great great great grand father IMPRESSIONS Glorra Julran 38 Subway cars the shuttle the elevated rarlway taxrs trarns and Frfth Avenue busses-all whrrled me from place to pla e on my last vrsrt to New York Crty In the Bronx Zoo the beautrful brrghtly colored flower beds fascrnated me The Irons trgers and es pecrally the laughrng hyena could be heard all over the place at feedrng trme One snake ate twelve prgs 1 . ,
