The leaders of business and other groups have contributed from their experi- ence to the changing school curriculum. They have also been active in pro- moting scholarships to deserving graduates and to increasing the number of Wells High School's graduates who go to schools of higher learning. They are at present cooperating in the Near Northwest Planning Commissions program of neighborhood improvement and development. An increase in automobile parking space and the creation of an area recreation field are two current aims of the Council. The following members of the Wells High School Community Advisory Council were present at the luncheon-meeting which was held in the Social Room at Wells High School on Wednesday, November 7th, l956: Albert H. The purpose of the club is to serve the community and to share in civic and social attairs, for example, last year's peanut sale, and the annual Youth Rally. Mr. Paton is the sponsor of this interesting group, which is affiliated with the Northwest Town Kiwanis Cluh. PAGE 59 Polish Assembly Through many years, the Polish Club has held a high standing in school activities and has brought to the students of Wells many in- tercsting programs concerning famous Polish artists, musicians, and patriots. Every year a famous Polish person is picked and discussed by the members. A program is prepared, and some of the mem- bers are given parts to read in English, telling about his life. The reading takes place on stage as Well as instrument solos and solos in singing. Every member takes part in the program. PAGE 60 Those who do not do anything on the stage are used in the chorus and sing songs in honor of the particular person. In six years, six famous Polish men have been discussed. They are Sienkiewicz, Meckiewicz, Chopin, Paderewski, Kossciuszko, and Moniuszko. This year we are studying the life of lozef Theodor Konrad Kor- zeniowsi in honor of the lUOth anniversary of his birth. He is very well known in America as well as in England and his English name is loseph Conrad. WELLS H. 0.11 13. The first l:t.Q.T.C. unit in Wells High School was started in l946. Since then, the Wells R.O.T.C. has steadily improved. When a student first enrolls in R.O.T.C., he is issued a uniform, which he must keep neat at all times. The cadet must wear his uniform once a week for Uniform lnspection which is held every Tuesday. The cadet is taught many sub- jects, such as, First Aid and Hygiene, Small Unit Tactics, Map Heading, and Marksmanship. Drill is another important part of the R.O.T.C., as it teaches the cadet precision, how to be alert, and his responsibilities within the Corp. While learning how to drill each cadet learns the meaning of leadership and how to be a leader. By learning leadership the cadet pre- pares for the future, when he will become a leader in his community and in the world. All these things help prepare a cadet lor the Annual Formal lnspection, which is given to all the R.Q.T.C. units in the city of Chicago. This inspection decides Whether or not an l:t.Q.T.C. unit becomes an Honor School. The Wells H.Q.T.C. unit has been an honor school since l95U through 1956. Qther activities that the R.Q.T.C. participates in are Platoon Competition, the annual Pt.0.T.C. Day parade, and Rifle Team Matches. Awards and promotions are given to the l:t.Q.T.C. cadets who earn them by doing out- standing worlc in the R.0.T.C., and their other subjects which they study in school. All these things add up to rnalce a team working to' gether and heloing Wells to have one of the finest units in Chicago. The R.Q.T.C. is instructed by lvl Sgt. Norman N. Nelson and SFC William G. Reynolds. PAGE bl 'Iwi , S' ,K 3 ,W Q , Y. x ew Q E ,gal was nf? i sv wx x.. Qffj, ff I ,x X 1 5 gg E-, 1 Q I 1 I Q I0 ,X M N me ,Zi A WN GHG if we x.,l, :W - . . ww Www . By Larry Pieroni Before the big championship game at Wrig- ley Field, Mr. Wolf asked us to gather around him as he told us how much better we were than Kelly. By the time the big game was ready to start we went on to the field KNOWING that we were going to win. The first game ended in a l to l tie with Tony Christopher getting the big hit just before the rain cancelled the contest. The next try was a success, with Vernon Neal turning in a pitching masterpiece, allowing two first inning singles and fanning seven. The final score was Wells 3 Kelly 0 with Wells win- ning their first Baseball Championship in the history of the school. lt was highlighted by the booming triple off the left field fence by Tony Christopher, after Vernon Neal had just blasted a single to left scoring our second run of the game. The first run came when Larry Pieroni beat out an infield hit, took second on an infield out and scored when Iohn Glanz singled sharply to left. After the game newspapermen and photog- raphers were busy taking pictures of the New City Champs and we really felt like celebrities. No one was more thrilled than our very like- able coach, Al Wolf. It was his inspirational coaching, undying spirit and skill that was one of the prime reasons for the VICTORY. It was the Wells High School Baseball team and not the Chicago Cubs that brought a cham- pionship to Wrigley Field. , . sv 2- T 4112 ffl. 'ns . C., o N-is PAGE 87 f, leur...
