She was named in honor of LTJG CHARLES FOS- TER WEDDERBIJRN who was killed in action on L'SS CHALNCEY while on European Patrol on No, vember 19. 1917. During World War ll Wt-Illlll1IRBl'RN saw her fair share of action in the Pacific Theatre and was credited with shooting down three enemy planes. She also assisted in the strikes on Palau.
