In the 60 years from Bainbridge to Bain- bridge, they have progressed from coal- burning, cramped little ships, hardly worthy of the title, to sleek men of war, powered by the constantly moving atom ,' destroyer armament has evolved from 3-inch guns to highly accurate Electronic Missiles. The Destroyeris one remaining feature of the past is the can-do attitude of her ohicers and men. Though weapons and tactics have been improved, the driv- ing force is the same. No job is too large or too small for a Destroyer or her crew, whether in war or in peace. And so to Destroyers. to the men who serve in them, and to those who await their return, this book is dedicated. 60th Anniversary

ERBURN was commissioned on 9 March The USS VVEDD 1944 at San Francisco, California, and named in honor of the memory of Charles Foster WEDDERBURN, Lieutenant junior Grade, U.S. Navy. LTJG WEDDERBURN Was killed in action on the USS CHAUNCEY while on European patrol in November 1917. During World War 11, the WEDDERBURN supported the d occupation of Guam participating by shooting down landing an , three enemy planes with another three or four possibles. She supported the landings on Leyte and took part in the Battle of She was in the first strikes on Formosa and the Cape Engano.
