COMMANDING OFFICER Lewavne THOMPSON was born on 17 October 1925 in Long Beach, Californiaf the son of Charles VV. and Amy THOMPSON. He attended I ting Beach City College in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy V-12 Frogram in 19133 and attended the College of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota until November of 1944. He was commissioned in March 1945 at the 1'.S.N.R.RI.S.. Ft. Schuyler, N.Y. as Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Commander THOMFSON'S sea going naval career commencedaboafd 1'.S.S. ATR 16, where he served as Executive Officer, Commun1Catl0f15 Ollicer, rnd Navigator. In February 1947, upon augmentation to the U5- Navy. he reported to the Naval Communications Station on Guam where he served in General Communications. ' From February 1949 to February 1952 he served in the Operations and Gunnery Departments on board the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. TOLEDO CCA-1331. During this tour he was awarded both the Navy CommenCl21t10U Medal and the Navy Commendation 2nd Award for action in Korea. LT- THOMFSON then proceeded to Post Graduate School at Monteray f01' General Line where he studied until December 1952. The years of 1953 and 1954 found him serving a two year tour 215 head of Administration Department of Sub Group One, Pacific RCS?1'Ve Fleet. in San Diego. California. ln March 1955 LT. THOMPSON received his first command which was the U.S.S. ORANGE COUNTY QLST-10681 lt was during this tour he became Lt. Commander. LCDR. rHoMPsoN served as Plans Officer on the starr of C0111- mander Naval Base, Los Angeles, California, from March 1957 to March ietso. when he was transferred to the U.s.s. PRITCHETT CDD-5515 es Erfwfive Oflicer. Viihile on board are PRITCHETT he received hw flllfdvsffipe and in December 1961 as Commander he took command of the 'L-.S.S. YVEDDERBURN CDD-6843.
