Ui: country needs today, as it has seldom needed in its history, a people possessed of attitudes ot tolerance coupled with an under- standing of responsibility. We have a remarkable degree of tolerance in our nation toward scientific and mechanical change. We have tolerance to a significantly smaller degree, however, in such fields as rc- ligion, unemployment, politics, race relations, industry, old-age security, education, social status, labor, and other areas that involve hu- nian relationships. I would make a plea for an extension ot tolerance in these areas, especially under the stress of the emergencies of today. ' It is necessary, however, in seeking an ex- tension ot tolerance, to understand the need of, and likewise seck an acceptance of responsi- bility. The civilizing influence of tolerance can be degenerated to the point where it becomes just a weak-kneed acceptance of current condi- tions. One must accompany his attitudes of tolerance in such fields as education, religion, industry, labor, race relations, and politics with convictions of his own-convictions based upon information, study, and understanding of the realities in these areas. Yes, tolerance is a great force for good but it must grow out of understanding and be accompanied by acceptance of responsibility. WILLARD E. GOSLINI, Superintendent i i i Jane says, Oh, you'r'e kidding again Page Twelve
